Hadn't spent much time with them but knew of them through some other bands like Falkenbach and Vreid. Came up on Spotify randomly; spent the whole day jamming.
Recently listened to Vried for the first time, found "V" cheap enough for a blind buy.... I don't understand the excitement.
Is this the place for prog rock now? Been listening to Porcupine Tree's EP Nil Recurring, which is pretty damn heavy by the way. I have no idea how these songs were not good enough for the Fear of a Blank Planet album. Gavin Harrison's drumming is fucking insane. In the last track What Happens Now there is this part where guitar is in 5/8, bass drum and snare in 7/8 with a dotted eighth note on the ride cymbal. Bass guitar and guitar then change into 7/8 and the dotted eighth note on the ride turns the entire lick into 12/8 every couple of measures, crazy. Sorry for nerding out, but it's definitely worth checking out.
I kind of envy you, I've been listening to them for a few years and I still find awesome songs that I've never heard. So many tracks.
Threshold will always be one of my favorite progressive bands. Mac was a fantastic vocalist, gone way too soon. Spoiler NP: Spoiler
Have they confirmed that? I've seen them 6 times (including some really special one-off shows). Not really into anything after Ghost Reveries but the first five records are god tier to me. I don't think I'd enjoy a show that was all prog. The last one I went to was like that.
they just did a short tour for their 25th anniversary where they played Ghost Reveries in its entirety for the first half of the show, and then other stuff for the second half i dont know if it's worth if you've already seen them that many times though
I saw King Crimson in 2008 when Porcupine Tree's drummer was playing with them. It was fucking amazing.
Favorite progressive/avant Metal bands/albums; VED BUENS ENDE 'I Sang For The Swans' Spoiler CIRCLE 'Työläisten Laulu' Spoiler MAGMA 'De Futura' (Not 'Metal' per say but this song is Metal as fuck if you ask me) Spoiler MENACE RUINE 'Dark Mother' Spoiler
Between the Buried and Me for $25 this Wednesday in my hood. Yes, I think I will be going to this. Apparently The Faceless was originally supposed to be on this tour with them, but it's August Burns Red () and a band called Good Tiger instead
I saw Between the Buried and Me when they were touring with Opeth and Dream Theater. I didn't know them then, and I don't really know them know. Any good songs I should start with? Also humblebrag, but after 11 years of trying I have finally got Dream Theater's Dance of Eternity down practically note for note on drums. I don't have a 65 piece drum set, but I can still make it work rhythmically. I'm gonna try and post a video with them drum mics in the coming months so y'all can talk shit.
White Walls is a great song and maybe as close as you're going to get to a "hit" for a band that plays such over the top progressive death metal. I thought their album from last year was really good. Memory Palace is a cool song from that album.
The one drum part I'll never be able to learn is in that Porcupine Tree song What Happens Now? I can handle the 7/8 bass and drums and the dotted eighth note on the ride cymbal, but he does fills on the toms. Every time I try to do the fills I lose the dotted eighth note on the ride and I fall apart completely. 3:08 and onward is where it starts to groove. 4:58 is where the song turns into a rhythmic opium den; it is one of the craziest passages of music I've ever heard.
Vic Firth sound isolation headphones, an Ipod full of Dream Theater, Nevermore, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, and my beater PDP set and Pearl Eliminator Double Bass pedal that I got off craigslist. edit: If that question was directed at Gavin, he is clearly from another planet.
That tour came through here but i didnt make it because i had to work. I wasnt terribly upset because i dont care for August Burn Red and ive seen btbam a few times recently.
I second White Walls. That seems to be the thread consensus for their best song 'round these parts. Son Of Nothing is good too.
fun fact: i named my dog after a dog discussed on a few btbam albums mordecai selkies shevanel parts 1 and 2 specular reflection (that intro ) telos silent flight parlaiment sun of nothing prequel to the sequel ants of the sky backwards marathon ad a dglgmut famine wolf disease, injury, madness fossil genera desert of song swim to the moon memory palace white walls obfuscation bloom lay your ghosts to rest that's all of the btbam songs that could even slightly resemble singles. oh, also
Been listening to Genghis Tron's 2008 album 'Board Up The House' a lot recently. It's like accessible grindcore (if there can be such a thing) with atmospheric electronic undertones. There are some catchy riffs scattered in with the chaos that I really like. Some of you guys who like proggier stuff would dig it. Spoiler: Genghis Tron - Board Up The House
apparently deadmau5 played Australian death metal at Ultra Music Festival this year for 5+ minutes. the video in this link is worth a watch for the lulz, nobody has any idea what to do. http://www.edmsauce.com/2016/03/20/of-course-deadmau5-had-to-troll-ultra-music-festival-some-way/ anyone know what the song is?
Yeah, that is bad ass. Hey guys, Master of Puppets was added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. I know there are times in my life where listening to Disposable Heroes is absolutely essential, so fuck yeah. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-03-...rding-historic-us-library-of-congress/7272924
In our face they spit The working man is an invalid Society nurtures the leech No need to try for a better life When you can sit on your ass And just bleed your country dry I'm working seven days a week Breaking my back to make ends meet We watch while future generations Pave our way to extinction Give them what they want It fuels their greed The parasite has a need to feed Off you and me So they can live for free A drain on society Spoiler Neck deep in shit It's our economy that takes the hit The damage irreversible A fuckin' free for all Lining their pockets with the cash we earn A parasitic nation let it burn You've got no fuckin' right You won't take what's mine Without a fight Stand up and be counted And do what's right Do you see it? It's destroying our integrity Hiding in plain sight Ignorance is systematic Politicians self help tactics Serves no means Pull out our tongues Remove our sight But we won't run This time we've come to Stand and fight
let me take u back to the good old days young punks . go turn on youtube.com and punch in metal health/quiet riot. thank you gubbs .
I loved them back in the day but when I listen to them now they sound so dated unlike maiden who you can still rock out to. Side note green manalishi was one of the 1st songs I learned on guitar (I know it's really a fleetwood mac cover)
