Well that was fucking terrible. Must win game at home, coming off a big win - and that's the best we can do? Looked like dog shit from the first drive. Can't wait for our mid teens draft pick again. Woo. On the bright side we won't have 50+ million in dead cap next year.
Sold our souls for the Lombardi Trophy. We're doomed to 40+ years of consecutive 6-10 or 7-9 finishes. At least we'll get to retire #9 and claim almost all of Brees career.
Fleener might be one of the worst decisions the Saints has ever made. What a joke, 5 yr / 36 million dollar contract to drop TD's.
I think I was pretty vocal about wanting to murder Loomis when he gave that contract to dickhands Fleener
Too concerned trying to find a replacement for Jimmy. Dumb. Will this be the 3rd year (or more) in a row where we will need to get a CB/edge rusher in the first round and not do it?
It's the same shit every season. Start out slow, claw back to .500 a couple times, end up sucking in December and no playoffs 2007, 2008, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016
2011 is the year that haunts me. We should not have lost that game in Candlestick, and a win puts us hosting the NFCCG against the Giants which I'd have felt good about. Not sure how we'd have done against that Patriots team in the Super Bowl but to me that's the one that got away.
Would buy that jersey in a second, but I can't see us wasting money on another TE after the Fleener contract.
Yea. Thing with Engram is we could use him just as a tall wideout, we don't really have a big target outside. I don't know, I really don't want to think about all the ways we're going to screw up the draft this year.
I don't want to invest another first rounder into a receiver. I think we need to prioritize Defensive Line, Cornerback, Offensive Line in that order. Of course I have no faith that we we won't screw it up either way. Pelican which Buckeyes should we draft for these positions of need?
It bottles my mind that in the world of professional sports (MLB/NFL/NBA), you can be utterly terrible at your job (see: Loomis, Mickey, or Fisher, Jeff), yet still always have a multi-million dollar job either in the front office or, at the very least, some sort of position coach with at least one team.
Gotta give a little credit, when due - I don't think they fucked up this pat draft at all - Rankins since coming back is looking solid Michael Thomas may be out best WR #hottake Vonn Bell is making plays and looks solid. Onyemata is on the team which is better than years past Lasco made the team in a crowded backfield. Our cap situation is fucked, and we've missed on every big multi-year FA we've ever signed. Fairley is good, Ellerbe when healthy is great. We need pass rush and CB though... can't stress that enough.
I don't know how well he'll translate, but we may be in range to get Tim Williams. I worry about him being a one trick pony.
It's not that our draft was bad, its that we've had the same glaring deficiency for several years and they refuse to address it in the draft. Fairly has helped along the DL, but none of their secondary moves have been worth a shit.
2 drafts ago absolutely agree - but last year Rankins was a need, and so was Bell... so can't really fault them there. I said it going into the season - our biggest need was CB when last year ended - we added absolutely nothing to that position, then cut Lewis... and now we're stuck in the exact same spot we were a year ago. If we can't draft someone, we need to bring in some FAs with experience, our dead cap is killing us in those backup spots. Not shocking our special teams blows also since we aren't pulling in experience backups who may have played special teams for a few years in addition to being a solid # 3/4 CB.
I've hated Josh Hill since Payton ran him on that stupid TE sweep on 4th & 1 a few years ago which I believe cost us the game. Not entirely his fault, but he's just never been that good - and Payton seems to love him.
I actually don't think this team is that bad. The defense is bad but it's not completely and totally awful like in years past. The offense is still pretty good. If we had average special teams and caught a few breaks, this would be 9-3/10-2 team right now. Yesterday is the only game so far where I feel like we never had a legit shot. Even the Atlanta game we maybe win if Brees doesn't throw a pick 6 late deep in Falcons territory. I don't think we're far off from putting it all together.
I'm thinking about what we do this offseason. We will have cap space since Brees signed his extension. But do we make another 6 year $54 million contract to a Jairus Byrd type?
I hope not, like someone said earlier this team isn't terrible - we're a few blocked FGs/XPs from being in the hunt for the division / a 1st round bye. We need to focus on 2nd tier, good backups, depth....guys who can play special teams. Build through the draft. We have 40 million in dead cap this year, less than 10 this year - so headed in the right direction?
I have zero faith that we'll have a good offseason until Loomis is gone or I'm proven otherwise. I'm in full self-loathing mode with the Saints.
You know what we need....A solid, cornerback. A real cornerback. Not Jason David, Fred Thomas or any other schmuck. UFA's for this offseason include: Stephon Gilmore Trumaine Johnson Dre Kirkpatrick Josh Robinson Logan Ryan
Still can't figure out why we would pay so much for Fleener and not draft Hunter Henry. Fleener is a 36 million dollar piece of garbage that brings nothing to the team.
The reason: Mickey fucking Loomis, and the dysfunctional family that is the Bensons captaining this shitshow
You're fucking high if you think we're going to compete (a) with this front office, and (b) with Brees' contract. We'll always be close while we have Brees, but I have zero faith in player evaluation and roster development with this front office. I try to separate 'front office' and 'staff,' because I love Payton and what he brings, I think his hands are tied though. I see him lasting next year and then jumping ship. How many NFL GMs are also "head of basketball operations" for the same city's NBA team? You can't tell me he can adequately devote enough time to both jobs, especially seeing as the seasons overlap for a good chunk of time. Fucking shocker that both franchises are consistently mediocre to bad. Burn it all to the ground. At least we got one Super Bowl.
I wish I was a shitty NFL player. I'd be playing two-hand touch in New Orleans and getting guaranteed millions to fund my future car dealership. We're a truly magical organization.
Not sure how many of y'all are season ticket holders but my family has 7 tickets (2 groups of 2, and one group of 3) - we are dropping all but our cheap-ish pair of tickets in the 600 level for next year - when we all want to go we'll just buy some online. We've lost a shit ton of money this year on tickets, the last couple of games we literally couldn't give away club seats. I'm assuming as we continue to go .500 for the next 3 years, then drop once Brees retires we'll be able to buy them for cheap cheap on ticket exchange / stub hub.
Ingram lost it on the sideline after getting taken out near the goal line. The sbnation site for the Saints has a guy calling to bench him the rest of the season. What a dumb fucking take.
That would be Dave Cariello. He's actually a huge Ingram guy, or at least has been in the past on the Saints Happy Hour podcast.
Well, regardless. He's an idiot. I doubt he was making the same ridiculous claim for Cooks when he bitched about not getting targeted a few weeks ago.
