Kinda hope UEFA says all 12 clubs have to be relegated next season. Now that shit would be entertaining.
HEY GUYS, WE'VE BEEN SELF REPORTING VIOLATIONS AND HAVE BEEN PLAYING IN EUROPA FOR A FEW YEARS NOW. THAT COUNTS AS OUR PUNISHMENT, RIGHT?
Good thread on the finances. This part was the most interesting to me as far as the wage/transfer/agent fee cap part of it.
It’s capping spending to maximize profits. While not exactly a salary cap, it’s under a similar umbrella
As every league in Europe has seen their tv deal cut, the premier league stays the same. I’m sure Florentino Perez loved seeing this.
how have they still not abandoned this plan? Are they staying in on the hope that they can win in court and force exit fees from the clubs who bailed? They couldn’t have less leverage if they tried.
So a few million fines for everyone but arsenal? Not too harsh all things considered. Will be interesting to see the legal battle that will unfold between Real Madrid, barcelona and juventus vs UEFA. UEFA getting the 9th club to denounce the super league meant that the league was apparently null and void so now those 3 can’t go after the other 9 for breaking out of the super league because it dissolves and now UEFA can go after those 3 more aggressively.
so are those 3 clubs going to try to collect 300m from the 9 clubs who left? if so, that will be really fun to watch
I’m sure they will try but good luck actually collecting it. Those 3 got a Madrid court to rule that UEFA can’t punish them for trying to leave but UEFA is going to do it anyway. I don’t even know if those 3 would see a dime of the penalty payments anyway. Wouldn’t the money just go to JP Morgan who were financing it?
i have no idea but i doubt any $ recovered would go to jp morgan and i doubt jp morgan would try to recoup anything. they'll just write it off as a deal that couldn't get done
I don’t think anyone has actually seen all the documentation that was signed either. I know a couple pages leaked but haven’t seen anything else.
Won’t even cover 1 years of dividend payments that they take out of the club. Their PR game is stronger than their actions like always.
It’s no secret that Barcelona and Real Madrid are both in awful financial situations. What do they think they’re going to accomplish by refusing to crawl back to UEFA? UEFA has them bent over a barrel because even a one or two year ban from the CL could do them long term damage. Would Messi even want to stay? Good thing for Juve that Buffon has shown he will stick it out while they’re being punished.
Premier league should focus on locking the teams up in a way to ensure the super league doesn’t happen more than punitive damages but a £5m fine per team that will be spread throughout the football pyramid would be a good thing for the sport without causing major issues.
The Premier League pretending to care about the fair opportunity to climb the football pyramid is a bit similar to Republicans pretending to care about voting rights and fair elections. Had the public in Britain had the same awareness of the foundation of the EPL as they do with the Super League, the reaction would have been similar. Making the league four clubs smaller and giving the lucky 20 clubs an unfair advantage by gobbling up the initial broadcast revenue seems like it should have been terribly received thanks to it coinciding with country falling out of love with Margaret Thatcher.
