Hes developed a nice niche. At first he was having trouble getting booked- Austin comedy scene is apparently a tight community that not keen on outsiders. So he started producing his own shows. Pulls down between $3k to $4k every week doing that and now comics reciprocate when he books them for his shows. But he started off doing a ton of door dashing and doorman work
I dunno, seems like every comedian has a podcast now, and most of them are shit. He does need to get better at self-promoting in socials tho. Promotes his shows well, but not as good when it comes to his material.
True. It’s more affordable than the other two and from what he tells me, has a good comedy scene. I just always think of NYC and to a lesser extent LA as the comedy centers.
It’s also a lot harder to get good paying gigs there because it’s oversaturated. Comics are a dime a dozen in both cities.
From what he tells me, the biggest reason he’s successful with show producing is most other comics are twenty-somethings that are about as reliable as an old ford pinto with no interest in doing the boring stuff. That’s how he’s increased his stage time. I doubt NY and LA don’t have more professional show producers.
Let me tell you about a podcast started back in the prehistoric time of 2016 with three comedians: one who was decent at standup, another who was extremely funny but lazy at standup, and a third that lacked in both. They talked about having gay sex with their dads and made a few million dollars.
saw stavvy yesterday, obviously was incredible hes co-headlining bert kreischers summer festivals he'll be A-list in short course
I subbed to his new Patreon for a bit but it was just the same stuff he did during the pandemic before he left CT. His Youtube special gave him an incredible amount of juice.
Is he blatantly racist and alcoholic? If so you should get him in touch with Gillis (who probably still lurks this board.)
I was talking out of pocket because the SNL stuff. In hindsight I shouldn’t have said that. I think he’s out of New York now, friends with Ari Shaffir, Mark Normand and those guys.
drewru I want to add that I think that’s awesome your cousin made the decision to follow his dream. If it fails he at least will always know he tried and can go back to his past career. Hopefully he kills it and blows up. If he’s got some stuff on YouTube let us know, add some viewers.
Got a call from my cousin on his way to Dallas for a gig. Told me that tickets to Rogan’s club are $50 w service fees and A drink will cost you about $30, with a two drink minimum. Rogan is the headliner every night, and like pretty much every comedian, he does the same bit every night. Despite all of that, the club is sold out for the next 6 months. I told him there’s no way that’s sustainable when it dawned on me, his club is just a new way to grift.
making a comedy club exclusively a tourist spot (if you have same people doing same sets each night that's who you'll draw) is a weird decision but maybe he's famous enough it won't matter
Maybe. He’ll probably have to say even more heinous and out there shit to stay relevant and keep the suckers coming.
Funny because for years he talked about how great it was to have access to the Comedy Store in LA because so many great comics are around and everyone is doing 10-15 minute sets and trying stuff out. For years he talked about trying to recreate that, but I’m happy to see he is just doing his own version of Yakov Smirnoff’s theater in Branson (no disrespect to Yakov, he found an audience that wanted to pay him to play the hits for 30+ years and is genuinely good guy). in other news, I’m completely done with Tim Dillon who was funny for a minute. But now he just panders to a right leaning audience for a couple hours a week on his podcasts.
Maybe Rogan’s club will attract more than just tourists. I mean, Trump rallies are basically him going rehashing the same grievances over and over for a couple hours. And people follow him like he’s the Grateful Dead. Maybe there’s a chud population willing to listen to the same comedy bit night after night because it reinforces their beliefs and “owns the libs.”
If you’re bored and looking for some laughs, check out the google reviews for Rogan’s club. Here’s a sample: This one confirms my thinking that some of his audience members may be going to multiple shows because it reinforces their worldview:
just wanted to say he completely whiffed on the Andrew Huberman and Peter Attia podcasts. You have these experts on and choose to talk about politics, not their areas. I felt kinda bad for Attia, he has a book coming out and Rogan is over there talking about the wealth tax. Attia basically didn't have anything to say. Not surprising, but what a waste
I know who huberman is but not Attia. But if you’re listening to a Rogan podcast to learn or hear anything substantive, you’re playing yourself.
Is Huberman a chud? Enjoyed him on Tim Ferris but slightly skeptical of meteoric rise + supplement grift.
He’s popped up out of nowhere. I saw someone mention him in a thread a couple weeks ago. Then all the sudden he’s everywhere. I’ve watched a few things. It seems pretty bro sciencey to me. But also he does his work at Stanford, so probably not? Idk. Nothing I’ve seen comes off as chudy. However it feels like most of those self help fitness hacks type guys are at least chud adjacent.
A lot of people that I follow in the health and fitness community have been referencing him lately so I consume his content indirectly through them. But I'll tune that stuff out when his inevitable heel turn into the next Jordan Peterson happens
Huberman is the king of the tech Bros obsessed with health group. He advocates for a lot of expensive health changes. He’s big on sleep and absolutely believes you shouldn’t consume alcohol at all
Following health and science stuff is a real mixed bag. It's hard to know what's science and what's not. I guess that's at least somewhat adjacent to the "supplement" industry being unregulated, which is super cool and not annoying as shit at all.
Well protein powder and several other things used in workouts fall under "supplements" which aren't total shit but you have to seek outside lab testing because the manufacturers will lie about how much is in them because they don't have to be truthful on the label.
The only thing Ive seen him push is Athletic Greens and a electrolyte mix. But also says sea salt will do. The rest is all timing out when you eat, workout, sleep, look at the sun (lol)
I tend to believe that Huberman and Attia are just looking to grow their audience, and know that Rogan has #s. If only 10% like what they say (or can understand it), as a guest on his podcast, then they might subscribe. That is substantial. I listen to both and have never heard politics or religion brought up. They mostly just interview people running labs at large universities, and discuss their most recent findings. A lot of it is about life optimization.
I haven taken athletic greens for years fwiw. It’s like ~$3 per day, or one less cocktail per week / making coffee at home. Slightly more expensive than the VSL pro-biotic I used to take and covers a range of other stuff. He also reps a ton of Momentous supplements: tongkat ali, fadogia agrestis, etc.
Hubermans been getting more mainstream, his podcasts are very long and dry but he really gets into the science and studies he references. Easiest to digest is stuff like this: https://hubermanlab.com/toolkit-for-sleep/ If you actually consume his content and not the quick hit clips on IG it all seems reasonable and straight forward without much peddling.
Since he's one of Joe’s boys I didn't want to post this in the standup thread. The audio of him talking about this is in the comments.
Yeah hey Jamie pull up the video of the hang mike pence chant. You can tell that is layered in audio. Absolutely insane bullshit.
