I am starting to get far too optimistic about this team. My co-worker keeps telling me we're winning 85 games this year and it's starting to wear me down because the division sucks and that many wins is doable.
I would re-read the injury histories of Mize, Manning, Maeda, and Flaherty before getting too excited about this year. I do think this team could be fun (esp. if they benched Baez) and being fun to watch is a welcome change.
they have the depth though if there are injuries. Manning / Gibson-Long in AAA. Jobe should be up here in July if he's as good as advertised.
I wanted to watch today's game after that earlier tweet posted here, and of course shitty MLB.TV had no broadcast available.
Not a huge impact choice, but I'm curious what they are seeing in Wentz over Brieske, if there is anything more to it than Wentz is out of options and Brieske isn't.
It’s gotta be the options issue. I was listening to Stavenhagen’s recent pod and his off the wall prediction for the year was that Brieske would close more games than Lange. Feels like a lot of people had him penciled in for the pen.
Other thing that stands out is carrying both long-relievers Faedo and Wentz. That may be a sign they don't expect their SP to pitch as many innings as teams normally do. With names like Maeda and Mize in there, that's probably an accurate assessment.
Considering the lack of success Faedo and Wentz have had as starters in the big leagues, I'm not sure they're viewing it that way. At least in terms of planning things out. Obviously, if you're getting smashed it's nice to have one guy eat 3-4 innings and take on that ERA instead of burning your whole pen.
The Mud Hens roster will open with nine of the top 30 Tigers prospects (MLB.com), being Jung (4), Malloy (8), Montero (9), Flores (10), Bigbie (13), Dingler (14), Hurter (16), Perez (21), and Leonard (22). Jung is the lone Top 100 MLB prospect of the group, ranking 60th in all of baseball (MLB.com).
A 70 wRC+ with 12 HR would qualify as a "resurgence season," and I'd still probably take the under on that.
Alright boys. Let's hear your predictions. Wins - 88 Season Finish - Division Winner, American League Champions Torkelson Homers - 33 Torkelson Average - .232 Casey Mize Games Started - 26 Skubal Strikeouts - 207 Baez Strikeouts - 97 (DFA or he will be bench player) Skubal Wins - 18 Colt Keith OPS - .795 Parker Meadows Steals - 22 Carpenter Homers - 24 # of Different Starting Pitchers - 10 Riley Green Games Played - 136 First Player to be DFA - Wentz First Player to be Called up from AAA - Brieske Jackson Jobe to Make Debut (if Yes, pick date) - Yes, August 2nd Saves Leader (How Many) - Lange (24) First Player to Land on IL - Baez First Player to Be Declared Bust by Vinegar Strokes - I won't answer this one.
Listened to a golf podcast that was talking baseball. One of the guys is a huge White Sox fan and friends with Benetti. He said Benetti basically got him back into liking baseball with his announcing. Excited about that
He’s great calling college basketball games. Really looking forward to having new voice this season. Shepard has been doing some pregames recently for like Red Wings / Pistons game. I really hope they don’t have him doing that for the Tigers. Doubt he’d even want to do that after he got fired, but he’s gotta eat.
Vin, I need a list of players already declared a bust before doing predictions to accurately pick 19. Don't feel there are many left
Meadows, Keith, Carpenter, Jung, Tik Tok Boy - have not been declared bust yet I think I declared Jobe a bust the night he was drafted out of anger, and Greene was declared bust last year when he was injured. Tork, Mize, Manning have been on bust list for couple years.
Wins - 81 Season Finish - 2nd AL Central Torkelson Homers - 34 Torkelson Average - .240 Casey Mize Games Started - 29 Skubal Strikeouts - 189 Baez Strikeouts - 137 Skubal Wins - 15 Colt Keith OPS - .765 Parker Meadows Steals - 16 Carpenter Homers - 21 # of Different Starting Pitchers - 12 Riley Green Games Played - 128 First Player to be DFA - Faedo First Player to be Called up from AAA - Brieske Jackson Jobe to Make Debut (if Yes, pick date) - No Saves Leader (How Many) - Lange (25) First Player to Land on IL - Olson First Player to Be Declared Bust by Vinegar Strokes - tik tok boy but only because when he calls tork a bust for another slow start it won't count since he's already been declared one
Cubs fan when I pay attention to baseball, but, the girlfriend is a Tigers fan. Can you guys point me to a good synopsis of this year’s squad? Just want to familiarize myself with who’s who, expectations, etc.
They're reliant on a lot of youth. If the young players succeed, it's a potential playoff team. Hitters of interest: Riley Greene (injuries), Spencer Torkelson (on-base percentage and defense), Colt Keith (defense/rookie), Parker Meadows (hit tool) and Kerry Carpenter (defense) all have all star upside and the question marks in parentheses. SS Javy Baez is an albatross and the rest of the lineup is mediocre. Starting pitchers of interest: Tarik Skubal has Cy Young potential if he stays healthy, Casey Mize is a former #1 overall pick coming back from TJ with a new fastball, and Reese Olson is an intriguing young-ish arm. Shelby Miller and Jack Flaherty are reclamation projects. The bullpen should be pretty good.
Give a follow to Vinegar Strokes , who is on a preseason manic high now, and will crash and burn approximately 10 days into the season.
If the young guys of Meadows, Keith, Greene, and Tork live up to their potential this team will be going places. Which I think they will. Strong rotation and bullpen as well. The former GM really built up the building blocks of the future before he left
I'm actually going to miss the game today, on vacation in Florida and will be at marlins opening day. It's amazing how little people here care about the marlins and how cheap I got tickets
Went to dicks sporting goods about 15 miles from their stadium to grab a hat for the game, had a full section of heat stuff, full section of dolphins, full section even of florida Panthers. Had like less than 10 total marlins hats in various sizes, 2 marlins shirts and no jerseys for sale. Seats 4-5 rows up in outfield on stubhub for under $25.
