I've had a french press before. Wasn't a fan. I don't have time for all that shit. And I'm not enlightened enough to tell a fucking difference anyway, especially after I put creamer and sugar in it.If I go to a coffee shop, especially one like what super is opening it's a different story. Just don't deal with it at home anymore.
$10.98 at Walmart for 18 cups. Fucking ridiculous. I need to get one of those little reusable ones and just buy my own beans and grind them like I used to.
If you're going to grind your own I'd just take an additional step and heat up some water to just at boil and do a pour over.
I would be interested in this as well. I started with craft beer and have progressively turned to a coffee snob for the same reasons. Far better taste and quality.
Just started using a french press daily about a month ago. Insane the difference in taste. Trying to work on a budget right now but after reading through this thread it looks like it's going to turn into a craft beer type hobby. Currently on a bag of Italian Roast from Coffee Bean Direct . They roast their beans within 24 hours of shipping and I paid $35 for a 5 lb bag (free shipping). Anyone ever dealt with them? I will probably start branching out to some of the more "craft" style coffee beans down the road but it was hard to pass on $7 a lb. for fresh stuff with good reviews on Amazon. Going to be getting a burr grinder for Christmas, looking at a cheap one for now and hopefully it will hold me over till I get the cash for $200 Baratza. Glad to see some TMB'ers are serious coffee drinkers. Lots of good stuff in this thread.
The buying of coffee and the importation of it has nothing to do with what this show was. No joke. It's not like this at all. The guy drives around and creates false drama and sniffs random beans and says "We can't guy these. They're no good." Reality is Steve and I work with farmers directly or farmer reps and we get 10 to 15 samples of the highest grade beans they have. Then we have to sample roast and cup each bean -- the cupping determines the grade. Anything over 85 we consider- its the minimum. Then you have to negotiate price etc, import, etc. You'd never actually just sniff a bean and determine its worth purchasing. Ridiculous. Here's a pic of a cupping we did with a food tasting at my restaurant. Steve and I did it. If any of you come out to SoCal PM me and we'll do a cupping at the warehouse. It's actually eye opening. I keep getting emails from these guests saying they can't drink Starbucks anymore after they did the cupping. It basically changes your whole perspective on beans.
wife bought me a burr grinder for xmas! ordered some beans from Rival Bros today. Will go to costco tmrw to get beans in the mean time.
I want to become a coffee snob. Someone want to put me under their wings? I recently started drinking coffee for the first time in my life like 2 weeks ago(4 weeks into having a kid) it has really helped me keep my day going. But knowing there is a whole world of this shit I feel I need to explore. I went to the local supermarket and grinded my own beans there. A Jamaican blend or something. It is so much better than this target brand market pantry ground coffee I got. I just have a small 4 cup mr. Coffee machine. My wife keeps suggesting we get a keurig and use those cup things. I guess that's what they have at their salon.
I'd read thru this thread since there's a lot of good information already in it. The important things are freshly roasted beans that you grind on your own. Burr grinders are much better than blade grinders. Lots of people on here use pour overs and French Presses as their main brewing method, but since you have a newborn, it won't be a problem if you just use the traditional drip machine. I'd avoid pods for reasons already stated in this thread but they may be convenient for your situation.
thanks, yeah..i just started reading through it...have already told my wife we need to get a water purifier
Okay....I'm gonna go use some gift cards here in a minute and buy a cheap grinder for sure. Debating French press vs pour over? I guess I don't understand what a pour over is. I saw a French press at a local coffee shop for like 20 bucks a few nights ago. Time isn't really an issue even with a newborn mainly cuz I have only been drinking it when I get home from work so its not like I'm rushing to make it before work or something. Also, would I be undoing everything if I used fresh ground coffee in my little 10 dollar drip coffee maker? Excited to grind my own coffee and have the house smell good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6_gKNsQ1vQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player Here's a vid of a pour over. I prefer it over French press for taste and because you avoid grounds in your coffee. As long as you use freshly ground coffee from beans that were roasted within 3 weeks, you're fine.
So, fellow coffee lovers.....I chipped/cracked the shit out of my French press this weekend. Looks like I'm in the market for a new coffee maker. Do I go French Press again or do I go Chemex pour over? I don't mind the grounds in the last sip....
If you get a Keurig, save the money and buy one or two of those reusable k-cup filters. A box of k-cups is anywhere from $10-$15 for 18 cups. It's outrageous. Not to mention, this way you can get your better quality coffee to use as opposed to the shit they sell. supercity Are you familiar at all with Melitta?
i do pour overs with my hario set up and I don't use my technovorm as much. You shouldn't have grounds in your cup with pour overs. I like this method because I can control the water temp and the aeration of the grounds. With a press you're just sorta soaking the grounds and I'm not necessarily a big fan of that - especially with the grounds staying on the bottom and festering. I'd try this and watch as many youtubes as you can to get the precise pour. 3NolesFan3 I have no knowledge of Melitta - save that they make filters
Just wondered. I love their beans. My step mother in law used to work there. Love all of the flavors they have. We used their pod machine for years. So God damn convenient and 1/3 of the cost of k-cups.
Why don't you post more? Remembered you as one of the USC posters back in the ole Rivals days during my stint from 2004-2009.
People put up porn NSFW stuff on here, so can't at work unless I use mobile. I browse from time to time, drop in say hi to people I know, like soul, powe, etc.
I am a huge fan of the clever...been using one for a few years now. It takes a little practice to get the grind/dose correct, but works really well and is very easy to use.
The French press and the chemex improved my life. I recently started wet shaving and feel the same way about it. I love this website.
You might really like the Clever then. It is like a hybrid of the two...4 mintue steep like the press, but clean cup like the chemex. They only cost like $10-$15 and you already have the kettle. My morning routine is a nice wetshave followed by homemade espresso...super cunty, super awesome.
Been wetshaving for over a year now, doing single cup pour over/french press right now. Chemex is on my list. Too bad the whisk(e)y threads are driving up prices....

is this the correct place to ask for any snobby K-Cup suggestions? About to run out and normally just get the donut house variety pack
anyone have a good premade halfcalf blend? i am tired of mixing my own and looking to cut my getting ready time by 3 mins.
