Some fun facts. The Russians were the ones who tried using dogs as anti-tank weapons (against the Germans)But they were never successful. That black stick you see pointing up on the dogs back was the automatic detonator. At first they didn't have automatic detonators, the dogs had to pull a string that dropped the bomb under the tank, and it never worked. So they added the automatic detonator to solve this issue. Problem was the Russians trained their dogs using Russian tanks, which ran off of diesel fuel. German tanks ran off of gasoline. So in the field, the dog had been trained unknowingly to recognize the smell of the tank. So instead of blowing up German tiger tanks, all they blew up was Russian tanks. I believe the most German tanks they ever blew up in one battle was 8. That battle also had 2500 German tanks in it...

I'm interested in this as well. Just curious, what reason do you see for removing the sediment? Aren't the turbine intakes on those towers? It would seem that those would stay out of the sediment pile. The only other problem I could think of is the force exerted on the damn from that sediment...

Usually engineers have to block off and clear out sediment at dam locations due to the settling from standard river flow. Basic principal of faster the flow, larger the sediment the water can 'hold' or suspend, so when it gets to the dam instead of it flowing downstream like it's done for miles, it stops, becomes sedentary, and the ultra fine sediments that are still suspended drop out. Over time this gets larger and larger, and if you don't clean it up, you can have large build up on the bottom. If you take up all that space with sediment, you are forcing the water elsewhere, which can cause problems. Maybe hoover is built high enough over the water height that they don't have to do this much, and/or the water backs up for miles just up the rock face around it. Usually it makes the water level rise and want to spill over but this one is obviously more technical than most dams.

I had not thought of this almost ramping effect that the sediment can have. Thanks for giving a thorough answer. I would think that the big bend in the Colorado just north of Hoover Dam might help limit this sediment deposition at the base of the dam
