Go see it. I honestly can't put into words how much I enjoyed it. It was shot really, really fucking well. There were no jump scares, but it maintained the tension with the family perfectly. My new favorite horror movie. Spoiler There is a a particularly disturbing scene where the witch brings apparitions of the two dead kids into the house, the camera then zooms out and instead of the mom breastfeeding the baby it's a raven pulling off her nipple. Also the goat ending up being the devil was great, especially when you thought that Thomasin (sp?) was lying about the twins speaking to him.
Holy shit, what a stressful movie. I dont know that I've ever felt that way while watching something. Like Croomsday said, it's incredibly well shot, and also had an amazing soundtrack. I highly recommend going to see this.
Saw The Witch last night Spoiler Movie was well shot, well scored, and well acted. I understand they were going for a folkish, ultra "traditional" witch story, but I couldn't help but feel like it fell short of the mark. The ending, to me, was almost laughable. I get they needed to employ the witches on broomsticks thing to keep it in the folklore mode but it just seems corny as fuck. More creepy than scary but not as strong as the hype, imo. I feel like an ending where the mother hangs Thomasin or Thomasin hangs herself would have been a better finale, but wouldn't have stayed "in lane" with the theme. Still glad I saw it but didn't love it as much as I wanted.
This opens Friday. Blue Ruin and Murder Party were both done by the same guy and both of those are pretty good.
audrew or anyone else ever watched this movie? NSFW as fuck Spoiler I have no idea why, but this damn near snuff film was available at our local Movie Gallery. We used to watch horror movies with my dad all the time and we didn't realize what we were about to get ourselves into. My dad laughed his ass off the entire time because it was so horrible. I was probably 14 and figured I'd be all about seeing some boobies, but That shit was a little too much for me. That little midget was awesome though.
Going to see Green Room on Tuesday, though I guess it's more a thriller than horror? Still, looks great. Can't wait.
What's on tap for friday the 13th? I want to see the witch, but it doesn't come to rental places for another week. Would love an it follows type recommendation.
Jason is currently taking Manhattan (Vancouver) and the principal/chaperone continues to be an incredible character.
I was eager to see any other opinions on The Witch. I dont watch many horror movies, but this caught my interest. re: the ending Spoiler - so how would the twins made a pact with The Devil? I at least assume that is the case as they disappeared at the end - Black Phillip speaking was my favorite part of the movie, while I expect it, it still came as a surprising twist for the goat to actually speak. plus his voice was as creepy as can be - Thomasin never really seemed to waver throughout the movie and gave in a little easier than I expected. You just watch this witch/coven/satan violently tear your family apart and now you decide to join them?
Bill Simmons mentioned Hush on this recent podcast (around 3-minute mark), hope to watch it this weekend: https://soundcloud.com/channel33/ep-108-the-watch-teaser-with-bill-simmons
Spoiler Been a while since I've watched it, but i think she didn't feel welcome anywhere. Her father was a disappointment to her, and turned out to not be the loving protector she thought he was. The mother and kids were awful towards her. She wouldn't be accepted back in the town, and her only options were to live alone or make a deal with the devil. Everything she had in her life had been slowly and sneakily taken away (not talking about the sudden death scenes at the end). Basically the devil started recruiting her by slowly tearing her family apart, starting with the kidnapping of the baby. Her "choice" really wasn't much of a choice at all.
Spoiler that is an interesting point, I never thought of her being targeted as opposed to the last one standing. also, once I realized that Chris Finch from The Office was the father, I couldnt get over it.
John Carpenter has signed on as a creative consultant & to executive produce a new Halloween (10th film). Michael is Coming Home! Blumhouse is Co-Producing the New HALLOWEEN — With John Carpenter Onboard! Gregory Burkart @G9Burkart May 23, 2016 Just like its unstoppable villain Michael Myers, it seems the HALLOWEEN film franchise — which launched in 1978 with John Carpenter’s original classic and spawned seven sequels as well as a remake with its own sequel — was destined to come back to life again. We’re thrilled to announce that Michael has found a new home at last — thanks to the efforts of Blumhouse founder/CEO Jason Blum, HALLOWEEN franchise producer Malek Akkad, Miramax and Trancas International Films, who have just announced a team-up of historic proportions to bring a new HALLOWEEN to the big screen. But hang on for the best part… Tonight’s press gathering included a surprise appearance by none other than the father of HALLOWEEN himself, John Carpenter, who took the stage to confirm that he’s officially signed onto the new film as Executive Producer and Creative Consultant (Blum describes him as “Godfather” of the project), which bodes very well that the film will bring the franchise back in line with his original vision. “HALLOWEEN needs to return to its traditions,” Carpenter said. “I feel like the movies have gotten away from that… Michael is not just a human being; he’s a force of nature, like the wind. That’s what makes him so scary.” “HALLOWEEN is one of those milestone films that inspired everyone at our company to get into the world of scary movies,” Blum said, “and we are so excited that Miramax brought us together. We cannot wait to find and collaborate with the right filmmaker to give Halloween fans the movie they deserve.” While details are still limited at this early stage, Blum did reveal that the film would be produced on a modest budget… and Carpenter says that’s the way it should be. “We made the original HALLOWEEN for very little money,” he added. “At heart it’s just a good, scary story, and that’s why it works. 38 years later, I’m going to help to try to make the tenth sequel the scariest of them all.” But we’re still not done… did we mention that Carpenter may also be composing the film’s music? Negotiations are still in progress on that, so we can’t say it’s a done deal… but it looks very promising. Carpenter has already been enjoying a major career renaissance with the cult success of his two LOST THEMES albums, which in turn sparked his first-ever tour of live performances with a full band, including his son and fellow composer Cody Carpenter (who would definitely be contributing to HALLOWEEN’s music, if the deal works out). So it looks like the stars have aligned perfectly for this project. [Note: Carpenter recently re-recorded the HALLOWEEN theme for a new EP slated for June 17 release, along with new versions of the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, THE FOG and ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 themes.] We’re still in the early stages of pre-production right now, but you can be sure that script, cast and crew announcements will be forthcoming, and you’ll be able to get all the news right here. Let’s do this! http://www.blumhouse.com/2016/05/23...he-new-halloween-with-john-carpenter-onboard/
