Nice job by Warren and Contreras to get out of that unscathed. Gotta think Richard* is gone with Nathan coming up tomorrow. Surely Joe can't keep this clown around any longer. On a worse note, top of the order up to start the 8th and the first two guys make outs. Not ideal.
Lackey blamed our defense after the game... again. He, for some reason, thought the ball hit to Baez in the first, before the Lucroy homer, should have been a double play. This is now the third time in his last six starts that he has blamed our defense. Mind you, we have the best defense in baseball according to advanced metrics, and he has given up 16 walks and 8 home runs over 36.2 IP in these six starts.
What I am trying to say is that he is starting to wear on me. This shit was forgivable when he was pitching well. But, when he sucks like this, him blaming his teammates (who are actually good) and trying to start shit with the opposing team every start... it gets old really fast.
I didn't see that. What a fucking chode. No doubt that shit gets old quick. Can't play well in the clubhouse either.
He should blame the offense. We scored 1 run, and he only gave up 3. We should have been ahead, and score more than 3 per game. The HR Montgomery gave up was a fluke, opposite-field HR and has no bearing on Lackey, so I'm leaving that out of the convo.
He should stfu. Nathan recalled; Warren optioned. Clayton lives. Drew Storen DFA'd by the Blue Jays. Could be another interesting reclamation project.
No idea, bud. Feels like a leverage thing; Cubs brass likes Andrew Miller. Think Giants and Nats are your primary competition.
Olney says the Yankees love Gleyber Torres. Well no shit. If that's the price for Chapman gtfo https://twitter.com/buster_espn/status/757232630043729921
Giving up top 20 prospects for two month rentals (a reliever no less) is not good business. If people want to label that as "freaking out," okay.
Then don't do it. Let a stupid front office pay that price. Send Gleyber out in a deal for a guy with years of control, like Alex Colome.
Archer plus Colome. Throw in Happ, Almora, whatever it takes. A starter and a relief pitcher. Both controlled for a long time. That's what we should be looking for. We are 7 games up on our division. We don't need to act out of desperation for a short-term fix.
Chapman is one of the best relievers in baseball. Torres is beyond blocked at the ML level. I'm ok with this
Torres being blocked makes him a good trade candidate, sure. But, that doesn't mean this is the right piece to trade him for. It's not. It's horrible value. We are 7 games up and the playoffs are a crap shoot, and Chapman is a relief pitcher. He's also a scum bag relief pitcher, no less. Giving up a top-20 prospect for a relief pitcher that is gone at the end of the season is crazy. Use Torres to get something else.
Not a lot of currency like Torres left. I don't mind spending it, but when you consider Lackey and Hammel aren't long, there is nothing in the minors pitching wise and Arrieta may not get his deal from the Cubs...you can't give up that currency for short term relief asset like Chapman. You take Jimenez and Torres and whatever else and get a guy like Archer.
Bingo. He's our big chip. We have long-term rotation concerns. Don't blow your load on a relief pitcher. Again, we are very likely to make the playoffs already. And we can still improve the pen without going for the top-of-the-line guys. It's just not worth it.
Team no thanks on trading blue chips for relievers. Give me the Montgomery types for Vogelbachs over that all day.
I wouldn't even be against trading for a rental piece. Trading for someone like Josh Reddick might help. I also wouldn't care about trading for a rental bullpen arm, like Chapman. But I wouldn't do it at this price. It looks like it's going to cost that, though, from what is being thrown around. I think any of these teams linked to Chapman would be crazy to pay what is being suggested.
If there is an extension, I don't mind the deal as much. Sure, you are paying him a lot of money, money that could be paid to him in free agency. But, at least we know for sure he isn't just a rental. And he is really good. About him being a piece of shit, though...
Matthew Trueblood @MATrueblood 24s24 seconds ago 1. The Playoffs are a crapshoot; missing pieces aren't a real thing. 2. If missing pieces WERE a real thing, they wouldn't *ever* be RP. He reaaaallly doesn't want Chapman - and it's not because he's a POS
The greatest basketball player and greatest hockey player in Chicago were grade A pieces of crap, now everyone is getting so moralistic about chapman
I'm not especially thrilled with this deal. But, to be fair, this guy is a fucking moron. For one, he wrote an article suggesting that the Cubs shouldn't extend Theo Epstein's contract. He's also compared Stephen Piscotty favorably to Kris Bryant, as recently as a month ago. I'm sure there's a lot more that he's been wrong about if you were to look, since he's, you know, a moron.
Would rather keep the cash and Torres, extend Arrieta and use assets to acquire a young TORP. How does a one inning guy alter the NLCS last year for example? It doesn't. Archer or Sale or someone similar likely does. Don't need Chapman to make playoffs. So how much does he move the needle once you get there? I don't see it. An extension makes it less awful but still not ideal. That he's a scumbag to boot should but won't matter. People revere Kane in this town and Brandon Marshall until he got weird his last year.
Julie Dicaro: Soler as part of deal is very believable. Cubs not nearly as high on him as fans. One source told me #Cubs question his work ethic. What in the actual fuck
Hearing names are done, Torres the big fish from Cubs, but more being sent to Yanks. If finalized, Cubs get only Chapman.
I have no idea what is going on. But I don't really like any of it. The Yankees are not an appealing trade partner. I don't like Eovaldi or Pineda that much. They are both free agents after next year. Chapman is amazing, but is a relief pitcher. Go find another trade partner. That being said, Theo Epstein is a shrewd dealer, so maybe I need to calm down.
