TB is a good coach, he'll adjust you guys. I did think those rules would affect UVA the most but it's not like they're magic anti-Hoo rules that will turn you into a shitty team. Your efficiency will probably suffer, at least for a year, but you shouldn't be that much less dangerous. VT is well, interesting. It seems like more of the pieces are in place but we're two games in so who the fuck knows. Clarke seems as advertised, Allen and LeDay were good transfers, and the freshman class is probably going to be pretty good but there's still not much quality depth and team chemistry will be a huge question mark. There's still virtually no expectations so doing anything will be seen as a good thing.
Srsly new rules make it very difficult to hedge hard on high ball screens which is a huge part of our D. Very difficult for any kind of help defense on a player driving to the the basket. Im all for eliminating "drawing" charges strategically, but not every contact can be a block. Weve had more fouls in the past 2 games than any game but one last year. If rules don't soften, we're going to have to make some big adjustments. But a lot of our defensive struggles have been poor execution too. Just took for granted that we would be solid defensively this year.
sorry that you guys have to play actual defense instead of daring the ref to call a foul every possession
UVa's real issue is finding a 2nd perimeter scorer. I think there'll be a lot of lineup tinkering through the rest of the OOC schedule and we play one of the toughest ones in the country this year. Should be interesting
college basketball refs not enforcing simple basketball defensive concepts is a major reason why the sport can be unwatchable at times it's rough now but once teams adjust it'll be a more free-flowing and enjoyable product
gross exaggeration. they're calling fouls on contact initiated by the ball handler as if the defender owes him the space he's in. it's laughable to suggest that's "real basketball"
its not like i am even arguing some controversial topic. college basketball refs allowing overly physical defense has made the game practically unwatchable. it is a very common complaint. theyre simply calling it how it is supposed to and you're only bringing it up bc it is negatively impacting your favorite team right now
no it's not. i don't think uva is doomed or won't be able to play defense anymore. it's just a transition period that absolutely needs to happen for the well being of the sport. tony is a damn good coach and will adjust accordingly (assuming they continue to call it and don't abandon it like in 2012-2013) don't turn this into some "oh your team doesn't play defense" crap bc it's just using something completely irrelevant to deflect from the issue
No one is arguing that handchecking and bodying offensive players should be allowed. But calling fouls on defenders when the offense initiates contact is basically just taking away defense. I agree that "taking a charge" as a defensive tactic is bad for the game, but there has to be some threat of an offensive foul in that situation, or else it's impossible to play defense.
I'll also readily admit (and already did above) that this UVA team is just not as good defensively as we have been in years past, at least so far, so a lot of our frustration is attributable to that as well.
i think you'll be fine. i think we all just want the refs to remain consistent and not abandon strategy like last time. consistency will give players a better chance to adapt and hopefully result in a cleaner and more viewable product
Official ACC rankings from the official rankers*: 1. Notre Dame 2. North Carolina 3. Virginia 4. Miami 5. Louisville 6. Florida State 7. NC State 8. Pitt 9. Syracuse 10. Wake Forest 11. Georgia Tech 12. Clemson 13. Virginia Tech 14. Boston College 15. Duke *these are the most official rankings and the only rankings considered for the NCAA tournament. Thank you.
I'm not saying the rules shouldn't have been tweaked, I'm saying (right now) they're enforcing the other extreme, which is just as bad. you called it "enforcing simple basketball concepts" which is what I took issue with. and I didn't bring up the subject so nanny nanny boo boo suck it
It is definitely nice to have a good coach who you trust to make adjustments. Glaring very obviously at Mike London and pointing furiously at Police Academy applications.
In other news your undefeated Clemson basketball team extends its winning streak to 3 after a 20 point trouncing of Texas Southern.
This X100000. There's way too many fouls being called right now but my hope is this is just a transition period that will lead to teams and refs adjusting accordingly. This is something that HAD to happen imo. The game at points was getting unbearable to watch with it sometimes looking like a damn rugby match. This will hopefully lead to a better, more open game that will be much more enjoyable to watch for most fans.
good Maui showing for the Deacs with wins over UCLA and Indiana should get our best player back the middle of next month
Clemson should win. This is easily the worst Gopher team since the one that Clemson beat by about 30 points and got Dan Monson fired in 2006.
He's pretty much guaranteed to get at least one more year. He'll get a pass no matter what because we're playing all of our home games in Greenville while we renovate our arena this year. Plus our retarded AD gave him a pretty big buyout and as HOOSINSC said, we aren't keen on dumping millions to buyout a basketball coach.
