This post has some major spoilers, so if you haven't read all five, you best be getting out. The prophecy for Azor Ahai states the following: Darkness lay over the world and a hero, Azor Ahai, was chosen to fight against it. To fight the darkness, Azor Ahai needed to forge a hero's sword. He labored for thirty days and thirty nights until it was done. However, when he went to temper it in water, the sword broke. He was not one to give up easily, so he started over. The second time he took fifty days and fifty nights to make the sword, even better than the first. To temper it this time, he captured a lion and drove the sword into its heart, but once more the steel shattered. The third time, with a heavy heart, for he knew beforehand what he must do to finish the blade, he worked for a hundred days and nights until it was finished. This time, he called for his wife, Nissa Nissa, and asked her to bare her breast. He drove his sword into her breast, her soul combining with the steel of the sword, creating Lightbringer. Now, from what it says, Azor Ahai tries three times and is only successful the third time and after he kills his wife. Being prophecy, it cannot be taken 100% literal. So what can it allude to? Dany and Tyrion were the third children of three and both had their mothers die giving birth to them. If R+L=J is true, then Jon is also the third child of three and his mother died giving birth to him as well. According to the vision Dany had in the House of the Undying, we know the "savior" will be a three headed dragon. The fifth room, finally, shows a man very much alike her brother Viserys, except that he is taller and has eyes of dark indigo rather than lilac. He is speaking to a woman who is nursing a newborn babe, telling her that the child’s name should be Aegon and saying that “What better name for a king?”. The woman asks him if he will make a song for the child, and he replies that he has a song and that “He is the prince that was promised, and his is the song of ice and fire.”. He appears to look at Dany then, as if seeing her, and then he adds that “There must be one more,” and “The dragon has three heads.”. If all this is true, obviously the saviors are Dany, Jon and Tyrion. I read most of this somewhere else and pieced the rest together. It wasn't my idea.
I love the point about Dany, Tyrion, and Jon all being 3 of 3 and killing their mothers during birth. Haven't heard that before. I am just confused as to Rhaegar naming Aegon the PTWP. I have said before that I think Aegon aka "Young Griff" isn't the real one, and is a Blackfyre in disguise, so I think infant Aegon was actually killed by the Mountain/Lorch. If Aegon is not the PTWP, was Rhaegar mistaken or was Jon somehow named Aegon too and his name changed to Jon to disguise his identity?
I think Rhaegar thought that Aegon would be TPTWP. This part was not really prophecy but a vision. When Rhaegar turned and spoke to Dany, I think his words then were prophetic. And I agree, young Griff is not Aegon. GRRM attempt at a red herring IYAM.
that is just a theory that Jon's mother died because of his birth, right? we are not sure why Lyanna died
Correct on both counts. As I see it, however, Jon Snow is the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna and she died giving birth to him.
I'm going to love it when Jon's parents really are Ned and that wet nurse Wylla. Spoiler his parents really are Rhaegar and Lyanna though
What if Jon is actually Ashara's son? I don't see it going anywhere but R+J though. Even if his original plan was to have it be someone else's I think people would riot if that's not how it turned out.
I feel like theres too many hints pointing at Rhaegar + Lyanna that if thats not his plan he's a fucking idiot because its past the point of red herring. However, I'm not going to burn his house down and stop reading if it is someone like Ashara... just if its her I don't see it being meaningful.
I think it is definitely Lyanna for sure, but I could see him pulling something weird and it not being Rhaegar and being like...The Mad King or something crazy.
I honestly think GRRM dropped some hints for the very astute readers, but he had no idea how it would take off and the proliferation of the internet. He started writing these books in the early 90s.
considering GRRM's love for that kind of thing so far in the series, shouldn't the most likely parents be Ned and Lyanna?
True, throwing in a twist would do nothing for the story. And it makes the most sense. Ned would only conceal the identity for an honorable purpose. He knew that if Robert ever found out Jon was R+L's son, he'd probably kill him, since it would make him a Targaryen.
I'm not sure about this argument. He knew that it would be under scrutiny because thats what sci-fi/fantasy nerds do and then they bombard him at conventions. Its one of the reasons he shows virtually no passage of time, so they can't say it doesn't line up. He's realized he's had to be super careful.
That's always been my thought. He started off thinking this would be only what, 3 books? Probably figured he'd be done with them in a few years and also had 0 way of knowing they would end up being his most popular series by far. There are little hints about a lot of things that I doubt he anticipated being picked apart by thousands of internet nerds that then created websites to dissect every little aspect of this world that he created in his head
