The cop tried to tase him. One of the prongs did not penetrate, rendering the taser ineffective. At that point the kid attacked the police officer, eventually wound up on top of him and repeatedly hit him in the face.

Yes, I'm ok with the cop shooting him.

He tried to tase him but it failed, so I'm perfectly fine with it. In fact, the more of these "refuse to comply" assholes that get what's coming to them, the better.

How do you know all of this? You can't see it on the video. You 100% trust what the cop says even after...

No way the cop exaggerated the exchange after the fact? I'm not saying he did or didn't. I just don't 100% believe the cop after I watch him make poor choice after poor choice that led up the exchange. The cop should have done his job better and never allowed the exchange to happen.

I'd say letting overzealous cops run the system is going pretty poorly, too.

What do you think the cop lied or exaggerated about? I mean, he is wearing the body cam. The kid refuses to comply and then attacks the cop and you think the cop is a liar? What did he do or say that makes you question his statement and the evidence on camera?

Yep, this cop's lying cause some schmuck somewhere else lied about something once upon a time.

That like me saying a sheriff's deputy was killed in Tallahassee last year, so this kid was definitely trying to smoke the officer.

The cop gave the kid plenty of opportunities to become compliant. The cop shouldn't have to and isn't required to wait for backup.

The notion that this is on the officer is absurd.

    What is your alternative?

We can't see the "fight." We have no idea if the kid was on top of the cop or not, unless you blindly trust the cop 100%. It's a grown ass man vs a 17 yr old kid. Normally the grown man can handle a kid. In this situation, I'm supposed to think the grown man was getting his ass beat so bad that he feared for his life so he had to shoot the kid 7 times? Sounds like George Zimmerman's defense.

Not a lot of people have their fight or flight responses triggered often. Not a lot of people are used to be touched, moved, or manipulated against their will either. Already under a high stress by being stopped by a cop, it's not hard to imagine sometimes people being irrational or doing things they normally wouldn't. This isn't everyone who fights with cops - there are a looot dirtbags who probably dream of it. That said, there's a reason the cops are taught to "restrain" and not necessarily "beat-to-a-bloody-pulp."

He called for backup while the kid was still in his car. He could have waited then or he could have waited while the kid was on the ground. What's the point in calling for backup if you aren't going to wait on it? The cop knew there was going to be a physical confrontation. That's why he called for backup. He then proceeded to engage in a physical confrontation which resulted in him shooting the kid 17 times.

When a cop hops on your back and puts all of his weight on you with a knee buried in your back, the natural reaction for most people is to try to stop the guy from breaking your back. It shouldn't be surprising that someone moves when they are put in tremendous pain.

He shot him 7 times. not 17

This kid was obviously not of the right mind, and the cop couldnt even check him for a weapon without him fighting. Is he just supposed to stand there and hope nothing happens until his buddy gets there?
    Fuck that.
That isn't how it works, man.

    17 was a typo, obviously.

Yes, he should wait for backup. That's how it's supposed to work. What's the point in calling for it if he isn't going to wait for it? Like I said, he knew there was going to be be a confrontation. That's why he called for backup. Knowing that he would need help, he went at it alone. That's poor decision making by the cop.

I love how the narrative is always to blame the cop's decision-making, when the perp's decision making DIRECTLY ALTERS THE OUTCOME.

The entire stop was dumb. The cop admits he had no intention of issuing the kid a citation when he pulled him over. He just wanted to tell him his lights are bright and he was driving with the high beams on. There's no need to pull the cat over. You know your car is pissing off other drivers because two of them had already flashed you that night. Take it back to the station and see if it's a problem or just ignore the flashers.

Then the kid was dumb for not just handing over his license. Then the cop had to show he was in charge and pull the kid out and tase him. And now the kid is dead.

Just a bunch of dumb all around.

    This.

I'm firmly in the "police routinely overstep their authority" camp but there is more than enough blame to go around on this one. Kid was being a dick initially which he shouldn't have, cop took the bait when he shouldn't have, kid resisted when he shouldn't have, cop escalated when he shouldn't have, and kid fought back when he shouldn't have. Lots of people did shit they shouldn't have, but ultimately when it comes to a matter of law I'm thinking that there's no way the cop isn't justified in pulling the trigger.

I also think this is where Equal Opportunity and other shit really puts the wrong people in these positions. Just for shits and grins I went through the Police application fitness test a few years back. It did weed out a few, but not nearly enough. I'm just an average dude and I passed it basically getting off the couch. When you have less physically fit people on the job, there's a higher likelihood they will have to resort to their firearm.

Lol 17 is a grown ass man. And you shoot until the threat stops moving. Look, would we all rather that some kid didn't die? Yes. But I will not fault a cop for using deadly force on an adult who attacks them. I don't care if he had a 99% chance of winning a fist-fight. At any time the kid could have pulled a knife or a gun or got lucky with a punch and knocked his ass out then beat him to death.

What you've touched on here is something that is never spoken about outside of police circles, like its taboo or something to say we are hiring the wrong people for the wrong reasons and then refusing to fire them over fear of lawsuits. People that cant shoot, cant PT, cant defend themselves, and cant verbally control situations bc they are weak (in their own eyes and the eyes of the suspect). This is why the idea of only hiring cops from the city they police is one of the worst ideas imaginable, you cut down on your applicant pool and hire inferior people.

There are still legit dudes wearing uniforms, and you see them on specialized teams like FBI HRT, USSS CAT, CBP SRT, NYPD ESU, MDPD SWAT, etc. but the general public does not interact with these officers on a daily basis, they interact with the sloppy fat guy or tiny woman. Just look at some of the videos you see where the cop verbally and physically diffuses the situation, it is usually some confident, in shape, squared way dude. This is not a coincidence.

What is the right thing here?

If you want argue police tactics or protocol, have at it. But to state a police officer should give up his life instead of taking the life of a perp that is beating on him is quite honestly absurd and really detracts from whatever argument you are trying to make.

I guess ultimately when it comes down to it, yes - every agency would like to hire a complete force staffed with guys who are smart and look like they are ex-special forces. You make a good point about the depth of the candidate pool.

This is similar to me being mad that Oregon State can't just go out and recruit a couple of 5-star offensive linemen every year.

That is taught in any self-defense class, and in the police academy. You never shoot to wound. If you fire your weapon, you fire to kill.

Thanks Steve, I'm just trying to educate myself, appreciate the info.

When you're life is threatened by an unarmed 17-year-old you fire until he stops twitching, you never know he might have a knife he kept for just this situation.

He shouldn't have even tried using the taser, clearly the kid was going to kill the cop with his bare hands, should have gone straight to the gun.

Damn I don't know what to think there. I see both sides. I see why a guy with a concealed license would pull his gun on an unmarked car that rolls up on him at 3am. I also see why a plain clothes cop would shoot him after he stepped out with with a gun. I guess the answer is to not have an unmarked car roll up on someone at 3am.
