i will start using km when one or both of these conditions are satisfied. 1. i live in a place that the metric system reigns supreme 2. i sign up for a ride that is advertised in km instead of miles
decided my ride was done today when I was literally blown over by wind. new it was going to get windy today but what was predicted was some bullshit because winds are almost double that now. started off with 10mph winds and was supposed to progress up to 15mph. I was in a decent stretch of shelter from the wind and in some trees and rounded a bend while climbing and popped out of the trees and the next thing I know I was on the grassy shoulder in a pile laughing hysterically. checked my weather app while on my duff and winds of 27 with gusts 40+. oh well, I will make up those 20 more miles I wanted today some other time
I should have gone yesterday but winds were like 20 mph and I was like fuck this. Winds like that with the sand makes riding miserable. Looks like I'll finish 2nd or 3rd this week again. Not bad for an old man.
I took a couple months off. Was really busy at work and got lazy. Been riding the past couple of weeks and feel amazing physically and mentally.
jealous. that is what I wanted to do this year but my knee has other ideas. can not handle weigh bearing or impact activities right now.
I just finished rebuilding my cross/gravel/ride-to-work bike: Details: It was originally a 2013 Trek Ion CX Pro, and I kept the frame/fork/headset intact from the factory build. I found an Ultegra 6800 take-off (basically brand new) groupset with a cross gearing (hard to find!) on the internet for < $400. The only thing the group didn't come with is brakes, because there is no such things as Ultegra 6800 cantilever brakes. This was to be expected since this groupset came off of a cross bike, and most cross bikes used cantilever brakes before discs took over in the past year. So I also re-used the original brakes (Avid Shorty 6). I went with white hoods, instead of the stock black that came with the groupset, because the bike originally came with white hoods, and I kind of like it now. The only thing I didn't do myself was swap out the bottom bracket, since I don't have a press, and getting the old ones out is a pain in the ass. I had the shop put in a new Enduro BB86 bottom bracket. Seatpost is a Specialized S-Works post I found on the internet Saddle is a Specialized Toupe Handlebars are Zipp Service Course Had a really nice high-end Jagwire cable and housing set sitting around for awhile that I'd been looking for a reason to use, so I finally got to use that up. Wheels are Mavic Ksyriums that came on my road bike (since I upgraded recently). Tires are 700x25 Michelin Pro Endurance 4. I like to run 700x32 and above when I'm gravel grinding though. Bontrager bar tape. I originally bought the bike used and the dude had neon green bar tape on it, so I've just been keeping the tradition alive. The seat angle looks messed up here, but that's just because of the stand. I leveled it after I took it down. Closer shot of Front and Rear Deraileurs + Crankset: Cages on: Bonus - Bike Tool Bench: Now, I just need to take a picture of the complete bike when I'm outside riding it tomorrow.
The Danish are known for a few things: healthy, happy people, delicious pastries... and fantastic bike lanes. Here's a Danish critique of poor urban bike lane design, with an emphasis on the much maligned Pennsylvania Avenue bike lane in Washington, District of Columbia. http://www.copenhagenize.com/2016/03/bicycle-infrastructure-fails.html so like... not this:
for some reason because TMB this video won't embed, link should work. here's how bikes get stolen in broad daylight. https://vid.me/bRLA
lets talk pedal preference. I'm currently on looks with both my bikes but have a bunch of teammates on speedplays. what does everyone use?
love the bike-- surprisingly really like the neon green bar tape. I'm running black bar tape on my red bike, but now you got me thinking.
unless you have bad knees don't get speed play. sure the pedal itself is lighter but the cleat is just as heavy I use look exclusively
I use speedplays. Love em, but they aren't for everyone. I like the float though. They suck at shedding mud though (basically all road pedals do), so I use crank brothers egg beaters on my gravel bike I posted above. Again, I really love the float on those.
colonelrascals you're in Houston, right? Where do you ride? I'm in Montrose and I've only taken my bike out 3 times since I've been here because riding roads down here is terrifying. That and Buffalo Bayou trail gets too crowded to get a quality ride in. I'm assuming I need to load up the bike and head to the burbs.
Yeah man. I'm about to ride bray's in a minute (hoping it doesn't rain on me) I will try to stay on the MUP when I can because houston roads are terrifying, but I do ride on the road probably 40% of the time. go out to katy and it clears up. happy to meet up for a ride if your interested.
BRomanceTaylor Here are some shots of my Strava heat map from 2016. We live in the same general area so I zoomed in for you. Spoiler
Thanks, man. Definitely interested. I ran the marathon in January, then got fisted by work from Feb - April and am just now getting back around to doing some exercise, so give me a couple weeks to get my legs back under me and I'll hit you up. Don't wanna hold you back too bad haha.
Shop ride tonight. Not as hard of a workout as we were working with a new rider. Got a crit tomorrow, Hoping for no crashes.
crashed last week. everything was fine. almost crashed last night, everything wouldn't have been fine. I got very lucky I stayed up right.
any rec's on a good quality for the price bike for general purpose for an out of shape physician? maybe some very light trails, certainly no great road distances
any of these 3 should fit the physician mold seriously though go into your local bike shop and ask. 1-2k is the sweet spot for bike prices IMO
In Washington, DC (where I live), you can get completely fucked up, get behind the wheel of a car with no license to drive it, run someone over and kill them, then flee the scene... and expect to serve just over a year and a half in prison for it. http://www.thewashcycle.com/2016/06/driver-in-2014-dc-drunken-hit-and-run-now-serving-17-months.html
