Above like 36 or 37 C or so feels like you're sticking your face into a blast furnace. Perfectly doable though provided you keep electrolytes in yourself religiously.

Proud new member of the cycling community. Columbia SC definitely has the heat/humidity thing going and also some hills. It's fun to show up on the bike at stuff around here because not that many people ride one and they're like  when you pull up at something like a baseball game on one

So my buddy is out riding (designed all the courses) with these guys on the east coast this week and next (dirt and gravel around State College, PA, Blacksburg, Va, and Asheville, NC).

They're pimping for Specialized, so he got a free Specialized Awol and a bunch of loot (shoes, helmet, etc.) out of the deal. I'll get to ride the Awol when he gets back; will report back here with my impressions. ((If I like it enough, I might buy one to replace my tourer / commuter which I just don't quite fit right, will never quite fit right, and am quite frankly kinda sick of.))

My aunt and uncle were biking in Asheville last weekend and got plowed into by a woman who ran a stop sign. I know a kid who was paralyzed after crashing around the same area. Thankfully they just broke a few bones

I gotta get my bike on the trails more often than once a week

Been riding my bike a lot lately. It's an early 2000s Trek hybrid I bought after college. We've been through a lot of good times, but I want something faster.

Looking at the Trek 1.2C (849 at my local shop) and the Trek Emonda ALR 5 (1349).

Both are within my budget. I am nearly certain I'll want to upgrade in a few years if I buy the 1.2C, but looking for thoughtful advice on whether the Emonda is going to be more than enough for a non-competitive weekend warrior, or whether I'll want to upgrade in a few years.

    Thoughts appreciated.

1st bike has better components on it (I've said it before ITT, that 5800 groupset is fantastic kit - noticeably nicer than the Sora on the other bike, particularly shifting and brakes), a full carbon fork, and is 3 pounds lighter.

Don't know much about the bikes themselves other than they get decent reviews. I'd go wider on the tires to 25mm... shame it doesn't appear this bike fits wider as a 27 or 28 would take more sting out of the alloy frame.

Hey all. I used to post in here a little bit ages ago.

Happy to see you guys' strava totals and stuff. Some real riders up in here.

I commute to work a time or two a week, 34 mile round trip. Pull my two-year-old 10-15 miles, week. Late night rides a night or two a week.

Used to log lots more hours before the kid, but have really been getting going a lot better this summer.

Winterbike: 05 Marin Muirwoods with studded tires
Road Bike: 07 Salsa Campeon with 105 group, Ultegra Hubs, Dura-Ace Crank
Grav/trailer bike: 16 Marin Lombard Elite

Nothing too high-end. Live in Minneapolis. Tons of cyclists around here.

Anyway, I'll probably just lurk. I'm jealous of the Strava group in the thread, but I'm a dedicated Map My Rider. I have four years of data on there I'm not eager to leave.

    Cheers everybody!

It needs a major influx of money to become more than a cobbled together collection of bike trails connected with some truly "holy fuck I'm going to die" road sections. Currently only 30% is trail separated from car traffic.

Anybody got a Rec on (cheap and/or Chinese) carbon clinchers?

I had a set of FLOs that I sold for a profit. Now I'd like another set.

Thinking 60s size wise and honestly hoping for a cheap Chinese option. There's a high likelihood of these getting wrecked in a race so not exactly looking at $2k zipps. Any suggestions?

If you want Chinese carbon, just make sure to go through one of the reputable Chinese dealers (like FarSports). They can always be hit or miss, but you'll have way fewer misses with the reputable ones.

You responded to this months ago so may have a response again. I stopped in my local bike shop and after eyeing me up was told 56 is what he would put me on especially with my knees. Then he showed me a 2015 specialized specteur aluminum frame with an aluminum fork. Sticker on it was $850. Told me he can do $775. Is this a decent bike? Worth the money or keep shopping for a used something...

Why don't you wear a helmet? IMO that's incredibly dumb and reckless. If you're riding you should wear a one.

I dunno, I've never worn one when I was a kid or anything. Never had any wrecks. Some argue that not wearing a helmet causes you to be more careful, but I don't know if I buy that.

We're probably going to be having a kid soon at some point, and there's no way in hell my wife will allow our kid to go without one (I wouldn't either TBH), She has always worn one, so when that happens, and our kid starts riding, I'll probably start wearing one too, if not sometime before.

No, but you should be able to find plenty of reviews online. It's probably the most commonly used Chinese carbon wheel. They aren't a scam or anything, if that's what you are asking. They are legit. I just always worry about the quality control process with any Chinese manufacturer (granted many American companies source their rims from these same Chinese manufacturers to begin with).

And yeah, DT Swiss 240s + Sapim CX Rays + deep section carbon for $800 is a steal.

Just make sure you have clearance for 23 or 25 mm wide rims if you go that route (you shouldn't have much trouble with the 23s, but unless your road bike is new in the last year or so, there's a good chance it wont have clearance for 25's). They do have more traditional ~20mm wide rims too though, it looks like.

I love cycling since I am training for a half right now I can only go about once a week. The only thing I don't like about cycling are idiot drivers. I used to not wear one but for a little bit I was riding everyday and every fucking ride I almost got hit. I just realized that me trying to look cool (not saying that's why you don't wear one) wasn't worth the shit that would happen if I got hit.

Honestly as a family man you aren't just responsible for you but also for your wife and future kid. Get a helmet there is literally no reason no to. I don't know if I am more reckless with one but I am more worried about careless drivers than me being reckless. The helmet gives me a little piece of mind. I still am very careful. If you don't wear gloves I'd buy some too. They'll save your hands in case you wreck. How long do you usually ride for?

That's a solid bike. It has a pretty relaxed geometry, which it sounds like you want/need. But I'm not a fan of aluminum forks. They are just really harsh (which is why they only come on the lowest tier models).

I think the Secteur is discontinued now, so they are looking to get rid of inventory. You may even be able to get a better deal on a version with a carbon fork.

Get leather gloves. Go to a bike shop and try on helmets and see what you like. They all have the same safety rating so it is just about how they fit and feel. A $40 one is just as good (safe/protective) as a $200 one. The difference will how light and breathable they feel when riding.

I got this one just because I don't like the look of the more traditional ones.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00OHBLT1W/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1470286172&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=fox bike helmet&dpPl=1&dpID=41-mRxRe-VL&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1

I got these gloves they help cut down on the vibration that was making my hands feel numb at around the 25 mile mark

At that price your in the upper end of entry level road bikes. It's a previous year model, and 2017s will be out soon enough, so he's motivated to move on it.

I'd continue to shop around and make sure other ships agree with the frame sizing (and he's not just outing you on something he wants to unload.)

As this sport attracts a lot of people that end up losing interest, there will be a fair amount of similar bikes with low mileage for sale used. Just get out and test some, get a feel for what you like.

Buying from a local shop, you'll start to form the relationship that you'll need in the long run: knowledgable sales professionals and service staff that will keep you on the road and ready for seasons with new parts and attire.

:killme: early this week on my commute to work I got a wire wrapped up in my cog and wheel. Took about 10 minutes to get out. Wednesday a spoke broke. Another broke Friday before I could get it to my LBS. Apparently the wire shredded like 9 spokes. So with labor, spokes and trueing the wheel it was cheaper to buy a new wheel.

    Lame.

Is it better to look at buying from a local shop or a bigger store/online? If I say I want to spend <$1000 total for bike plus everything else. How much of that should be bike cost? I don't have shoes, pedals or helmet or anything else. (Bought a wireless odometer at the local shop to be a good customer)

Shoes are $100, pedals are $50, cleats are $15, helmet is $40. You'll want a pair oF bibs ($75?). I usually tell folks $200-$300 in accessories and then it grows from there.

Don't buy from the big box stores. As yo get deeper into the sport, you can utilize them for specific part purchases, but at this stage you need the service of a local shop.

Any local bike shop will offer you a discount on apparel if you purchase your bike from them, possibly a larger discount if you buy at the time of the bike purchase.

Another things that can be tossed in are bottle cages and bottles (they'll have some branded with their logos, easy for them to throw a couple in free of charge.) This could easily be another $30 in costs, but they have great margins so they're not taking a big loss to give them out free of charge will getting a happy customer and free advertising.

As for pedals, you should be able to pick up a pair for $35-50, preferably from the shop but you can buy them beforehand if necessary.

Here's a pair of pedals just to give you an idea of what to look for:
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/221598520917

Purchase the shoes from the shop and have them set them up for you (i.e. install the cleats) during your bike fitting.

Which brings up the fitting. This is probably the biggest component of service you need from a good local bike shop. They will probably set up the bicycle in a trainer and fit the bicycle to you:
    • Seat height
    • Seat position
    • Handlebar height/reach
    • Cleat position
Without the proper riding position, you'll be more sore, less efficient, and less likely to enjoy your new hobby/sport/fitness routine. Without the cleats installed properly, you'll rub on your cranks, be less efficient, and overall less comfortable.

Thanks for the info. I'll let you know how things turn out. I just remembered an old college roommate of mine raced on the team and I went with him to the Lehigh valley velodrome. They do two "Velofests" a year and it's only 30 minutes from me. Tons of vendors and tents set up. Went with my roommate once and he dropped some crazy money. I think this October is when I'll see what I can get.
