    Hey guys
i figure there is already a thread on here somewhere for books suggestions but i couldn't get the search function to work. Anyway those of us who read Game of Thrones probably have similar interests so this thread is not a complete waste.

I'm currently finishing up a Feast of Crows then will read a Dance with Dragons but besides GOT what should i start next. I loved the series and the only other books i have read are Harry Potter (loved HP too..) I enjoy series of books cause it allows you to get to know the characters but im all ears for any suggestion.

    Thanks!

I didn't mean to respond so slow but i don't get on here much and completely forgot about this thread. Appreciate the responses

I will definitely read the Dunk and Egg tale i had no idea they even existed, but want to give GOT a break for a bit.
I keep hearing the hunger games and it seems like a quick read right before the movie comes out.

Then im thinking WOTthe Feist books also look interesting and Temeraire is really intriguing.
    Thanks

The only people I hear about The Hunger Games from is girls. Last time I heard girls talk about books this much was Twilight.

I just finished Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. Fucking excellent book. Now I am going to re-read The Hobbit (4th time) and then LOTR. Really excited about re-reading LOTR since I've only read it once and that was about 9 years ago.

Hunger Games is definitely better than Twilight and definitely NOT a chick/kids book. Would highly recommend Dr. Driskel

I've never read it, don't really know that much about it. I wasn't comparing any subject matter to Twilight, the only thing I was saying was I haven't seen this many girls talking about a series of books since twilight. Not even saying I'll never read them, was just initially put off by the sheer amount of dumb chicks tweeting about the series

well the main hero of the Hunger Games series is a girl so I can see why they would like it so much, not many books portray teen females in a strong role...there is a shallow undercut of a romance but it is not the central theme at all to any chapter of any of the books...i only watched the first twilight and parts of some others but it seems those books make the girl the typical love triangle which completely consumes her life and makes her an idiot...in the hunger games she for the most part is pissed off that she has feelings for any of the guys

I just finished reading the first Hunger Games book and I can see both sides. The author definitely spends way too much time thinking/talking about feelings and shit, but there is some good action. And you definitely get the "on edge anything can happen at any moment" feeling during the competition.
I thought the ending was a cop out. But I have heard it is the set up for the next two books, so whatever

Read the three Hunger Games books over the break, finished the third last night. Pretty solid. Collins does a pretty good job of taking after GRRM and just killing people off. There is one in particular that's pretty depressing.

Thought the 3rd hunger games book wasn't written as well. Lots of stuff left without an explanation or glossed over. Great series overall though

Prim's death was awful. That hit me harder than Rob's death in Storm of Swords.

I kept waiting for Cinna to show back up, thought she did a shitty job with his story

Disagree, so much of those books are her internal struggle with herself. Just like Game Of Thrones vs tv series....can't capture it all

Just finished the 3rd book a few minutes ago...what clusterfuck. So much potential and we get shafted with that bullshit? I really wish Collins had left it as one book. I really think she got carried away and couldn't figure out how to wrap it up.

I thought the whole thing with Coin was rushed and not well explained. Its implied at times that she is no different from Snow and that its her that calls in the bomb strike but they never explicitly say it which I thought was a big what the fuck. I actually liked that Katniss didn't go all Rambo and kill Snow, it made it more realistic. I just thought the whole thing was sort of confusing at the end, especially about the part of her voting there to be another Hunger Games. Maybe I missed something. I really thought Katniss would die by the end of the series.

Yeah her voting for the hunger games was a WTF moment...but at that point i was pretty pissed off with how the end of the book was going I wasn't reading every line. I was REALLY hoping that one of Katniss, Gale, or Peeta would die by the end. Instead all we got was a minor character (Prim) that you are supposed to care a lot about because of her ties to Katniss, but because Collins completely ignored her character development I didn't really give a shit. It was like oh whoopty doo, Katniss is gonna be fucked up in the head some more...who saw that coming

Pretty sure she voted yes so that she could carry out her plan of killing Coin and this moment was the one that finally convinced her it was Coin that ordered the murderbombing of the Capitol children that killed Prim. It goes on later to say that all of the arenas were destroyed so it leads me to believe that there were no actual games once Katniss killed Coin

Yeah, but she could have killed her either way at the execution, and once Coin proposed the games then she knew she killed the kids. that didn't mean she had to vote yes, unless it goes back to the quote "if your immediate answer isn't Coin then...." and she thought she had to agree to make Coin not suspect anything

I think that was it. She had to get Coin comfortable...she may not have let Katniss execute Snow if she had gone against her. I also think Haymitch figured out what she was thinking which is why he votes yes by saying "I'm with the mockingjay" not I'm with Katniss

    About Mockingjay

I was really disappointed when she killed off Finnick. It felt like she was trying to be all GRRM and kill off a main character suddenly, but it really just felt like a cop out. In the end she didn't kill off any of the true main characters (Katniss, Peeta or Gale). I also was really frustrated how every time we would get to a major climax in the books, something would always happen to Katniss where she would black out and what actually happened would be explained to her/us later. As much as I loved the first two books, Katniss was just too much of a little bitch for me to enjoy the third.

I think this is because we all wanted Katniss to act how a guy would, and I'll give Collins credit...Katniss acts exactly like a woman would in that situation.
    a little bitch

Read the Farseer books over break and like them. Nowhere close to the complexity or scope of asoif but it's still pretty good.

also read the 1st hunger games book and didn't like it. I see stephanie meyer is big fan.

the first law trilogy (abercrombie) is pretty good. I personally couldn't get into the malazan books. I lose interest if there is too much magic. I really want to give the rothfuss books a shot.

Yeah I'm wondering how they are going to turn some characters in GOT from heel to face without their inner thoughts when half the time they are just traveling.

David Gemmell is a good one I dont ever hear mentioned. I would suggest the Rigante series the Troy series and he has several single books set in the same land called the Drenai saga.

Reading the first book of this series The Blade Itself and about 100 pages in I'm pretty hooked. Similar situations with the North, the Union and the Empire.

late response, but I think the Malazan series is amazing. It starts a bit slow in the first book and he just throws you into the world without much explanation so you feel lost with all these new characters and history thrown at you. There is a fair amount of magic but I think it works better than the magic I've seen in most series. It also involves the gods of this world/universe, which I loved.

The series is dense and jumps from groups of characters to other groups from book to book so you don't have a main set you follow through on each book. For many that's off putting, and was for me at first with this series, but once I got to know all the main characters I didn't mind it at all. No character is safe, just as much as SOIAF.

I read Malazan after SOIAF, then tried Wheel of Time, but I think Malazan and SOIAF ruined fantasy for me with their real, in depth characters. I just did not care about the characters in WOT at all.

I might have enjoyed Malazan more than SOIAF, but I go back and forth on that and SOIAF isn't finished yet, of course. Malazan at least has a complete story with an ending I won't be deprived of if the author dies before finishing the series.
