With Stan Kwan being fired ( :chatzy: ) I think this was totally necessary. Kwan is a classy guy, but wow was our ST awful. It won't fix everything but this was totally needed, if just for some new blood on ST after 10 years. Hopefully our coverage is not a joke, and maybe, just maybe, we can develop a return game?

Also, the Lions staff is coaching the North side of things in the Senior Bowl. I know some teams don't find the use in it, but it seems like Mayhew & Schwartz have been very diligent in their college scouting so this is great, especially for those later round picks.

So bring on Suh, McCoy, Berry, Okung or Davis, and let's get cracking.

Warning: This might be the most optimism this thread sees all year, be advised.

Looks like the Lions need a new QB coach. It seems like Linehan was very hands on with Stafford so I am hoping this won't effect him too much:

Schwartz made a pretty big deal out of the OC basically being the QB coach last year when he hired Linehan, so I don't think it's that big of a deal. I can't say that I'd ever heard of Jeff Horton anyway, so I'm not really sure what they lost.

Yeah. Though if they really wanted to invest in Stafford, I wonder if they could get Jim Zorn? I am not sure what OC jobs will be available and even though he is a WCO guy, he's been a QB coach most of his career, and a fairly respected one at that.

Just a wild idea, I doubt it happens.

I am with you though, I couldn't tell you who Horton was before today.

What are peoples thoughts on the #2 pick? I'd like either Suh (obviously) or McCoy. I'd be thrilled with either. I could also understand Okung there, and I wouldn't be pissed off if they took Berry (think he's a great player, but I'd rather get a pass rusher).

If the Rams took a QB at #1 (which looks very unlikely IMO), would you be pissed off the Lions traded the pick for good value (something like a #2 and 3 on top of a high first rounder) instead of taking Suh? I don't know that I would, as long as they didn't drop too far down so they lost a shot at taking an elite player.

Also, going into FA, two guys I think the Lions would benefit to sign are QB Chris Redman and WR Kevin Walter. Walter had a down year and is looking at being replaced by Jacoby Jones, but he is a solid #3 and would add versatility to our WR core. Plus I doubt Northcutt is back so we'll have an opening. Redman just makes sense because he's a true pro, can start in a pinch and most importantly, he is a guy who knows what his role is, which is what we need more then anything.

I have to wait to see what all these free agent rules mean before I can really even think about players that could come in. With no new CBA, this offseason is going to be very wacky.

This is probably homerish, but they really might want to try to move up a little bit from the 2nd round pick and grab Brandon Graham. Their pass rush has been some of the worst I have ever seen for years, getting something off the edge would make a world of difference, plus, Graham is such a momma's boy, he'd love staying in Detroit.

Re: 2010 Detroit Lions Season Thread

Suh falling to #2 is the best possible scenario. I don't see it but I'd love to trade down. Suh at #2 nets the most possible value for that pick. I could see a top 10 this year, a 2nd and a 1st next year for that pick, if not potentially more.

Otherwise I hope we pick Suh, McCoy or Anthony Davis. Davis would be a great LG for a year or so until Backus is ready to go and then slide him over. I wouldn't mind Okung but I don't like him as much as a run blocker as Davis. Plus Davis is 21.

I still love Eric Berry and think he is the best player in the draft, but I am not sure how a team can afford to pay two high priced safeties (Delmas will get paid eventually)

    Regardless, I am excited.

Re: 2010 Detroit Lions Season Thread

Inconclusive. He showed some great things, and some bad things. Injures killed him though. He looked like he hit a stride after the Skins game, and the first part of the Bears game, then he got hurt and lost a lot of momentum. Add in the fact our run game and D sucked and Calvin was hurt a ton, so they didn't get much chemistry together (in the preseason they had like 18 snaps together) and it just didn't work.

But yeah, he had moments like early vs Seattle where he looked amazing, then the wheels fell off in the second half, and he had games like Cleveland where he was unstoppable.

I think he'll be great, this season didn't change that for me. Though if you think he might suck this season probably didn't change that for those people either.

Re: 2010 Detroit Lions Season Thread

Tough to really judge to be honest. I was about as high on him as anyone before the draft, and I think we saw some good and some bad this year.

IMO, the two best things that I saw/read about his rookie season is that the organization seemed to really be behind him, and his teammates really like him/respect him (particularly because he played hurt, and also stood his ground when he got the shit kicked out of him in a few games and kept getting up). Those are two huge things that separate him from someone like Joey Harrington, who had neither, on top of the obvious different in physical talent to boot.

What really sucked about his season, IMO, is that he got hurt twice, forcing him to miss some games, and he was really beginning to play well before getting hurt both times. He played very well IMO in their loss at Chicago before getting a fluky knee injury in that game, and he threw five TD passes and had the ridiculous ending against Cleveland, but his shoulder injury made him much less effective and he ended up missing the rest of the season.

Not really sure what to think of Davis yet. At this point, I think I'd prefer the surer thing in Okung, but I'm open to arguments for just about anything.

Re: 2010 Detroit Lions Season Thread

I can certainly get behind that. The only reason I think I prefer McCoy is that I think the offense can still be good with Backus playing LT, as long as they get better at the guard spot next to him. I don't think the defense can succeed without the addition of one or two playmakers that get you off the field on third down and force turnovers. I thought the defense was much better last year than in 08, but they just didn't have the players up front or in the secondary to get off the field when they had to.

Re: 2010 Detroit Lions Season Thread

I wonder how the draft will change if Rogers gets cut from Cleveland and is serious about coming back. I still would consider taking Suh or McCoy #2 but it for sure opens it up for a LT at that point. Still probably a pipe dream but you never know.

I do agree about needing defensive playmakers, at least two, to get you off the field. Seems like we have one in Delmas, but we need another.

Ideally we just find a way to trade out of #2 but we'll see.

Re: 2010 Detroit Lions Season Thread

I have always been a fan of Davis, so it might be a bias of mine, but RU runs an offense the Lions want to run. Power run, and then stretch the field. Okung is a great pass blocker but is not there as a run blocker yet. Not to say he is a bad run blocker, but for what the Lions keep stressing they want, he doesn't seem up to snuff, whereas Davis is a more polished run blocker. I think a year or two of him at LG would be a godsend for this OL before moving him to LT. I don't see that with Okung right now, and I don't see Backus slide to LG effectively so that is the biggest issue I have.

What's the word on Kevin Smith? Is he gonna be able to go through camp and play next season, or are the Lions looking for an RB in the draft?
  25. MG2

MG2 Still celebrating the Jim Schwartz era

Re: 2010 Detroit Lions Season Thread

He'll probably start camp on the PUP list until his knee is healthy. I think the Lions should have been looking for a RB in the draft regardless. Smith doesn't have the speed to break long runs or the ability to break tackles. Every game, he would get tripped up for a two or three yard gain with minimal contact, jump up and start bouncing around like he was so close to breaking a big play. I can understand doing that, but if it happens to you four times every game, perhaps you need to start breaking more tackles.

Slow day in class today, so I figured I'd bump this thread up. Apparently Follett is looking great in OTA's at WLB and is competing to even play on 3rd downs as a Nickel LB. It's obviously just OTA's but the coaches are apparently impressed with his pass coverage. Honestly though it isn't like he could be much worse then Sims got.

Gun has been talking up Follett all offseason, I hope he lives up to the hype. Our only real terrible position group next year will probably be DB. Don't get me wrong, in a passing league that means we're still going to give up a ton of points, but this team could honestly win 8 games if something terrible doesn't happen.

Re: 2010 Detroit Lions Season Thread

I'd be satisfied with 5 wins, happy with 6, and ecstatic about 7.

The offense looks pretty good on paper, but it's still young. We have no idea how good Best will be. We really don't know about Stafford (though I like what I've seen). The OL is average, at best, IMO.

I think the D will give up a ton of points unless we pick up a solid CB when cuts are made. I don't expect the LBs to be anything more than average. Follett is a question mark and I feel the same way about Levy as I do about Stafford.

I like what this staff has done with the roster. There has been a major upgrade in talent since the 0-16 season, and it seems the draft is where the greatest strides have been made which is huge in my eyes. I know you're not really predicting 8 wins or anything, but Lions fans are drinking a bit too much kool-aid IM.

What they have done this off-season has been very cerebral. This season we will be more competitive, I don't know how many wins it will translate too, but easily more fun to watch.

    By Position Versus 2009
    Offense 2010
    QB Upgraded-Stafford Gets better
    RB Upgraded-Added Best
    OL Upgraded-Added Sims
    TE-Upgraded with Scheffler
    WR-Upgraded with Burleson

    Defense 2010

    DL-Upgraded-Added Williams, Suh, and KVB
LB-Downgraded- Could be the worst LB core in the NFL-Add Bullock we are same as LY
    CB-Upgraded-got younger and faster
S- Same but upgraded last year with Delams last year

I wasn't a fan of his when he was in Detroit originally. Don't see how he's more than a nickel or dime CB now. They benched all of their CBs last year because none of them were physical, and none of them could tackle. That's why Bly was dealt in the first place.

There's not really any sites that I go to. Most of the stuff I see end up being on PFT anyway.

As for Best, it's tough to tell how he's doing until they get to camp and he puts the pads on. At the very least, he'll split carries as long as he's healthy, and the only ways I don't see him being the main guy at RB is if he's injured or just never picks up the offense (particularly the passing game, which shouldn't be the case).

I think they're going to start out slow, as they have to play at Chicago, GB and Minnesota in the first four weeks, with the only home game being against Philly in week 2. They also have so much turnover on the defense that it's tough to see them not struggling early on. Hopefully, they build throughout the year and end up closer to 7 wins by the end. I would be very disappointed if they didn't win at least 5.
