Anthony Zettel, eh? I think he's a better college player than pro player, so I am not sure how long for the NFL he is, but we have a ton of DT's.
Current DT's we have under contract Ngata, Walker, Charles, Reid, Wright, Thornton, Robinson, Zettel and I am sure Fluellen is hanging around Southgate ready to make a quick jog over to the AlPo HQ if needed.
Bruce Feldman @BruceFeldmanCFB 2m2 minutes ago PennState DL Anthony Zettel goes to Lions. Heard some teams were intrigued by him also as a possible FB/HBack a la Dan Klecko/Bruce Miller,
I think Zettel is a DE. If he's going to make the team, it will be as a LDE backing up Taylor. Maybe he moves inside to DT on passing downs later on, but I'd be surprised if they tried to play him inside all the time.
I would also say that WR isn't a huge need since our #3 will actually be our fifth option behind Tate, Jones, Ebron and Riddick.
Don't want to get too into the UDFAs because of how unreliable the reports tend to be. Reports are we are signing Jay Lee, the Baylor WR we've been linked to since the all-star games. Seems like he could maybe make a run at a 5th WR spot, maybe.
Centers can be weird on drafts. Not a ton of teams select them, usually, and a guy like Allen probably doesn't get drafted because he's limited to one position. He was a better player than Glasgow, but Glasgow has more versatility to play different positions, as well as the size to probably play in more schemes.
He fell because he can't get open consistently and they are worried about getting separation in the pros
WR Jay Lee, Baylor (signed) CB Ian Wells, Ohio (signed) DL James DeLoach, Georgia (signed) OT Chase Farris, Ohio State: $10,000 signing bonus, $10,000 base salary guarantee WR Simms McElfresh, Appalachian State (tryout) FB Tyler Roberts, Troy (tryout) WR Jace Billingsley, Eastern Oregon WR Quinshad Davis, North Carolina: $3,000 signing bonus TE Adam Fuehne, Southern Illinois (per NEPatriotsDraft.com) TE Cole Wick, University of The Incarnate Word: $10,000 signing bonus OL Andrew Zeller, Maryland (per Red Lion football) DE Deonte Gibson, Northwestern (per Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald) CB Charles Washington, Fresno State (per DraftInsider.net) CB Adairius Barnes, Louisiana Tech
Jay Lee is basically our Charone Peake equivalent, less injury prone but maybe not as fast (although still fast).
There are 0 LBs on that list of UDFAs, to go with only one draft pick there. Our current LBs on the roster (not including Tulloch) are: Levy, Whitehead, Bynes, Van Noy, Williams, Brandon Copeland (listed by some as DE), Khaseem Greene and Jerry Franklin That's not great. LB and DE both scare me right now in terms of depth.
Special teams and depth. I think they probably think they have a decent group with Levy, Whitehead and one of Bynes and Van Noy, considering we're in the nickel so much. At this point, though, I do wonder again if they're keeping Tulloch. Levy/Tulloch/Whitehead and then Bynes/Williams/Van Noy is an okay 2 deep. Franklin and Goodman are depth and special teams - Goodman might be a practice squad guy. Copeland and Greene seem like they're training camp fodder.
On linebacker Stephen Tulloch, Quinn said there’s no update, but “there is a chance” he stays with the team this year. “We’re working through a few things with Stephen and his representative as we speak,” Quinn said.
He's been working out at LeCharles Bentleys facility for a few months now and the Lions have had nice success with his products after doing so. Wouldn't surprise me if they got some good/trusted Intel from him.
Mlive did a story with Bentley on Farris where he basically said he could be the best guard in the league in 2 years. Obviously a lot of bias for a lot of reasons there, but Bentley likely gave an extremely good rec with him based on athleticism and general inexperience on the OL.
Don't mind this but I doubt he sticks Source: the Patriots have traded LB Jon Bostic to the Lions for a conditional 7th round pick in 2017.May 9, 2016, 6:00:15 P
Gregg RosenthalVerified account@greggrosenthal Gregg Rosenthal Retweeted Selz Lions have shaky starters at DE, LB, S, CB. Not much depth everywhere and what position groups are above average? This was in response to Rosenthal saying the Lions roster looks worse than last year. I am definitely more in line with Rosenthal than most in this thread, but I do think DE and CB could be much better than he thinks. Of course you're banking on Taylor transitioning to being an effective full time starter and Lawson and Diggs improving. I think Diggs is legitimately solid, but Lawson needs to take a step. SS is definitely a weakness, and if Levy isn't healthy we're definitely fucked at LB. As far as position groups go, I am truly not sure what position group we have that is better than above average. None truly stand out.
that was where my head was at. RB could be if Abdullah has a nice year. I can't think of any other group that is close.
I like our wide receivers and tight ends as being better than average as a combined group. DL with Ziggy, Ngata, Robinson, Taylor and the depth is pretty good. DB has 2 good starters and a lot guys to fill in the other spots - most teams don't have 2 starters as good as Slay and Glover At this point I'm considering Tulloch as part of the linebackers and giving that group an average grade. OL should be better this year, although that's a question mark. Same with RBs. Special teams should be above average. If the QB is good, it's a 10-11 win team; if not 6-7 wins. If the quarterback isn't good, we're looking at a long stretch of ugly.
