I give Caldwell and the team credit. Can't make the playoffs at 1-7, so they tried to beat GB three times today to see if the league would count them all. It's a bold strategy, but not sure it will pay off.
Chris Burke @ChrisBurke_SI 34s35 seconds ago Martha Firestone Ford was just 66 years old the last time the Lions won in Green Bay.
Meant to mention this on Sunday but forgot. Darius Slay is back to being the corner I anticipated him developing into. Aaron Rodgers was very complimentary to him after the game and teams are not throwing his way. Now granted some of that is because the other DBs blow but since the Broncos game he has arguably been our best player.
What a great time to be a Lions fan! Now we can trade those picks for retreads instead of using them to pick retards.
Lions announce that Rod Wood will replace Tom Lewand as team president. Wood has served as president/CEO of Ford Estates the last 8 years. The Lions are establishing an advisory board to oversee the search for a new GM, which includes Martha Ford, her four children and Rod Wood. The Lions also will use the NFL’s Career Development Advisory Panel, with the possibility one or more members of the panel helps GM search Martha Ford in a statement: "Rod’s appointment now gives us the ability to move more decisively with respect to our search for a" GM
So Wood is replacing Lewand and there will not likely not be a search firm used to find the new GM. I doubt forgoing a search firm will be an issue but the advisory board is certainly not awe inspiring.
This is actually a solid resource so it isn't the end of the world but I hate that Dungy is on the panel.
Its part of the institutional structure of the league to protect itself from someone hiring a guy they think is a yahoo. Its a prime example of what I hate about the NFL and why they're wildly successful.
I hate the Fords, but I don't get why this hire is getting met with such anger. He's been hired to run the business side of things. He's not going to be making football decisions (I presume). It makes sense she would hire someone she knows to run the family business.
A lot of it depends on the structure of the org moving forward. This guy can't do what Lewand did in terms of the cap stuff because he has no experience. If he's just going to run the business ops, that makes some sense because the Lions are one of the 2-3 least valuable franchises in the league. They're going to need a bigger front office than they've had with this hire, though, and I think it's reasonable to question how they plan to fill all those spots without anyone at the top of the pyramid knowing anything about football or running a professional football team.
But it makes sense that they'd hire an "insider" to run money stuff. If the guy is making cap decisions or screwing around with the draft then get the pitchforks out, but if his job is to look out for the Ford's bottom line than its fine.
He'll hire the GM, at the very least. Team president position might also have been a useful tool to get a better candidate.
New Lions President Rod Wood tells WJR-AM 760 that his duties are to run business side, not make personnel decisions. That's next GM's job. 7:23am - 20 Nov 15
Sounds like the 97.1 people are going off on the Lions today after news the team is moving to WJR. Hosts saying the team has consistently tried to get the station to stop being so mean. Apparently Valenti is the one they've had the biggest issue with, which makes sense because he's an asshole. Makes them look pretty bad, though.
lol, fuck Valenti but there's no way the could do this Bill Shea@Bill_Shea19 Mort Meisner, agent for 97.1 FM personality Mike Valenti, says the #Lions demanded Valenti's firing as part of WXYT contract negotiations.
I listened for a few minutes and whoever is Stony's co-host (Bill?) said the Lions would call the producer in the middle of the show and try correct what the Lions considered to be inaccuracies. Classic Lions.
No clue on the Valenti stuff, although I'm guessing every sports team (and almost all the players on them) hate that guy and want him to be fired. I'm guessing that a team complaining to its radio partner to be less critical is pretty common, though.
Valenti Stop being a trash organization and people will say nice things about you. It's crazy how that works.
Valenti's deal is up in March. To me this seems like a way for 97.1 to kiss his ass going into negotiations. 105.1 has tried and failed to bid on the Tigers and Lions and from what I hear the bids were substantial. Valenti is probably their last hope and they will definitely overpay to get him.
With that said I do believe the Lions called in to correct shit people said but I doubt they demanded someone be fired. In fairness to the Lions though I imagine most of what Bill McCallister and Scott Anderson say about them is wrong.
Valenti just tweeted for the first time in about a year. Apparently he is going to go off on the Lions on his show.
If they told 97.1 they needed to fire Valenti, that's just stupid. You can't do that as a professional sports organization and expect it not to come back to you, which is why I'm guessing that didn't happen (at least in an explicit way). At the same time, I get why the Lions would prefer their radio partner not play a part in turning a miserable fan base into something more miserable and disenchanted with the org. That's not really on 97.1, because that's good for business. It makes sense why the Lions would prefer another station, though. The bad thing is this was managed so poorly that now 97.1 can say/do whatever it wants because people will believe the Lions did anything because "lol Lions". Misery is good for 97.1.
Valenti with a partner who had something of a brain would be really good, as he's a different guy when Jamie or Wojo is on with him, but Terry Foster just licks his boots and plays the shithead sidekick and lets Valenti be a total moron too often. But maybe that's what Valenti needs.
Foster tweeted today that the DetNews offered him early retirement and he'said going to take it. He hasn't done shit there for about 15+ years at this point.
Read this backwards Kyle Meinke @kmeinke 45s46 seconds ago Valenti: "I'm going to sleep great tonight. And when you go out there and lose to the Raiders, I'm going to laugh at you." Kyle Meinke @kmeinke 2m2 minutes ago Valenti: "The reason the Lions want to leave is because the Lions want to control the message." Kyle Meinke @kmeinke 3m3 minutes ago I just heard Terry Foster's voice for the first time. We're 10 minutes into this thing. Kyle Meinke @kmeinke 3m3 minutes ago Valenti: "The Lions, in short, hate me because I don't care about them. I don't fear them." Kyle Meinke @kmeinke 4m4 minutes ago Valenti going all in on Lions: "Leaving because you don't like me? You look stupid." Kyle Meinke @kmeinke 5m5 minutes ago that's ... that's really something. Kyle Meinke @kmeinke 6m6 minutes ago Valenti said after he called FG unit the worst in NFL last yr, his boss got yelled at in driveway by Lions. (Lions finished 32nd in FG) Kyle Meinke @kmeinke 8m8 minutes ago Valenti: Play games, win games, I say nice things. Play games, lose games, I say mean things. It's that simple Kyle Meinke @kmeinke 9m9 minutes ago Valenti says Lions kept him off various programs "because they don't like the things I say." Kyle Meinke @kmeinke 9m9 minutes ago Valenti says Lions PR boss Bill Keenist would try calling him between segments. Kyle Meinke @kmeinke 11m11 minutes ago Valenti not backing down. Basically says the Lions are full of it.
He writes short columns a couple times a week where he makes up some stuff and repeats something that was on the message boards like 4 days earlier. He's a total clown.
Valenti when it comes to Michigan/MSU ... it is what it is. He's got no obligation though to shine the turd that is the Detroit Lions ...
Ill advised statement imo Wood says he's "probably not qualified to run any other NFL team" but is qualified for this job because of relationship with Fords 3:49pm - 20 Nov 15
While I have no problem putting the Lions in the wrong, Valenti needs to look in the mirror. He's a shock jock blowhole and I don't blame the Lions for not wanting him on their flagship doing team gameday shows or the main afternoon weekday show. His shtick is being a contrarian asshole, which is lowest common denominator stuff. He's chosen his act, and he shouldn't be a crybaby when the Lions don't want it from their station. It isn't like the other people on The Ticket pull punches with the Lions, but they only singled one guy out. One guy on that station was enough of an asshole that they wanted him fired.
