So Pelfrey's last 14 appearances: 75 ip, 4.20 ERA, .834 OPS against. That last number is still terrible and he's only a 5 2/3 inning pitcher, but he's been more serviceable than it seems (one appearance was 4.1 innings as a reliever and the other was the 1.2 inning abortion earlier this week). His FIP is a lot higher due to him not actually being very good, but his results have been better than it would predict. If you chop the 1.2 inning start coming out of the break, his ERA over the last 12 starts is 3.91, although he still doesn't average 6 IP. My summary: he's junk, but he's slightly shinier junk than it seems. We've actually won 3 of his last 5 starts, and wasted a pretty good start against the Jays. A decent stretch from him won't last, but he's actually helped us tread water without Zimmerman. One thing I noticed in looking this up is his career BABIP is .317. How the fuck? That's batting practice.
My favorite topic: Dixon Machado continues to be streaky, at best, but with him 2 years younger than Iglesias and supposedly a better fielder, whicle Iglesias continuing to be an empty stick, at what point to they move Iglesias and go with Machado? Iglesias only has 2 more club control years and has Boros as an agent. Realistically, Iglesias is the starter coming out of Spring 2017 and Machado is back in Toledo trying to get a little more strength and consistency, but I expect Machado to be the everyday SS in 2018.
After Ausmus called out Iglesias a week or two ago for unnecessarily making an over the shoulder catch, I wondered who would say no to a Iglesias to TB for Drew Smyly deal with this in mind. Not sure either would do it, as Smyly is giving up HR at an Anibal rate at the moment, but I think I would rather have him for the next few years than Iglesias.
I would LOVELOVELOVE to trade Iglesias for Smyly, but I think the Rays say no first. I saw that catch. It was ridiculously nonchalant and unnecessary. It made me go back to disliking him, although his defense has been much better the last couple months.
what do the stats say about iggys d? feels like hes made less of those "incredible" plays but that might be due to our pitchers getting mashed. but if his d is in decline id have no problems moving him ...
The stats this year say he's one of the better defensive SS in the league. That seems about right. His range this year seems better than last, which makes sense since he's not coming off missing a season with lower leg injuries.
Miggy starting to heat up. 4 hits tonight and finally comes through with the bases juice. Would be a great game for the bullpen to finish off. They've switched announcers tonight. I love Dickerson on TV and like Mario on the radio. Had the radio on earlier and I think Price spent the afternoon day drinking in the city.
To carry on, Dickerson has a style made for tv - he doesn't expose the play well on radio and tv solves that. And giving him an intelligent partner like Morris means he has less work to do.
Impemba sounds totally different on radio. Had no idea who it was while listening. Dickerson should be on TV full time.
Jon MorosiVerified account@jonmorosi Jon Morosi Retweeted Jason Beck #Tigers status: not selling. Jon Morosi added, Jason Beck @beckjason Avila said they're counting on returns of Zimmermann, Norris, J.D. Martinez to bolster club. "This is a team that can compete," he said.
Chris Sale didn't want to wear throwbacks last night http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/17131938/chicago-white-sox-scratch-pitcher-chris-sale
Not sure if this really matters, but 4 of the 6 runs he gave up were in his last inning, during which he gave up all 3 of his walks and 2 of the 5 hits he allowed.
At least K-Rod and Greene will be fresh in case we need them tomorrow. Time to sell. Although it's hard to trust the group that signed Pelfrey, Lowe, and Aviles to make the correct move.
Unless they could get a ransom for some of the vets who likely wouldn't be moved in the next week anyway, selling seems like a really bad choice. They don't have to move any of these guys because almost everyone is locked in beyond this year. Just play it out, hope it works out, and deal with the rebuild in the winter.
That is a good point. I just want to blow the whole thing up now. Id like to get rid of Kinsler now, while his value is higher than it will ever be. Payroll will be high next year with little to no roster flexibility. It will be same team just a year older next year
Only 50 pitches would suggest he has to do at least one more rehab start before he comes up Emily Waldon @emilywaldon2080 Final Line in rehab start for #Tigers Jordan Zimmermann: 4.0 IP / 4 H / 0 R / 0 BB / 2 SO. 50 pitches (38 strikes). 14 batters faced. #MiLB
Saw on MLBTR where Wilson is drawing significant trade interest. In this market I would certainly consider moving him.
Justin Wilson? That would be a tough one for me unless it was the kind of return we couldn't turn down.
Yeah. BYB brought up a great point about what we gave up for Soria and how Wilson is probably more desirable than Soria at that time and in this market, it becomes that much more appealing. I would think kicking the tires on a deal would at least be prudent.
I think it's worth listening on. All our guys are at this point. I guess it depends on what the plan is moving forward. If the plan is to continue to try to compete moving forward, moving him for prospect doesn't really work. If Avila already knows he's going to blow it up this offseason, then he probably gets more for Wilson now than he would at any other point and should move him. I don't think they would even consider it unless we go 0-fer this week, though.
im still team "soft rebuild" so id be really hesistant to let go of Wilson unless its some rediculous offer ...
Lynn wrote an article today about a major teardown on the horizon, but probably not starting this week: Of course, Lynn Henning often doesn't know his ass from his elbow, so who knows.
JV has "significant market value?" even with the year he's putting up i cant see anyone taking on that contract, completely at least ...
Anyone not named the Los Angeles Dodgers, anyway. I'm sure they'd love to stick him in their rotation right nowm, and even after the non-waiver deadline we should be able to get any contract we want through waivers in August if we lose more ground in the standings. Nobody aside from the Dodgers is claiming his contract on August 15th if we want to unload him. I wish we could get somebody to simply claim Upton.
I could see Verlander one day leaving the Tigers in FA for a larger offer. I won't believe they would trade him (even if someone really wants him) until I see him on the mound in another jersey.
Fulmer is about to face Betts for the 4th time - Betts is 0-3 with a K. Man on 3rd, 2 out in the 8th. Fulmer at 96 pitches. Gives up a triple. Game tied. FUCK YOU AUSMUS.
Wilson gets through the heart of the order for the save and the Tigers sweep the Red Sox in Fenway. Currently 4.5 back of the Indians, 2.5 back of the Red Sox for the final WC spot. Even more unlikely we're sellers at the deadline, would almost need to get swept by the Astros at home and I'm not sure even that would do it.
Sweeping the Sox in Boston is very nice. Really hope the recent trends for some of these guys like Rondon in the pen are real.
