I think that ultimately my biggest fear with our mindset moving forward these next few days is that the teams judgement is clouded by how poorly other teams are playing. I know that we have a bunch of issues that could be rectified which might cause us to turn a corner and start playing well, but realistically we are just not a good team and Mike Leake and one decent reliever isn't going to change that.

Royals are getting Zobrist. When you consider how many times we still have to play them this season, well, it paints an even bleaker picture.

Ben Zobrist is the #1 guy that makes me hate WAR. two 8+ seasons and never a full one below 4 (until this one probably). consider this:

he's no where near the class of those guys IMO. never got why WAR loves him so much ...

Tigers are going to be a bad team these next few years if they don't sell. No bullpen, no good young pitching to build around, and an aging Miggy, Victor, and Kinsler. Yikes

I think we can put a fork in 2015. I'd market everybody except Iglesias, McCann, Castellanos, JD and Miggy.

I really hope Dave was at least taking offers from people while he was telling people he wasn't selling.

I get wanting to play it out (less so today than I did on Sunday afternoon), but Dave isn't doing his job if he's not at least seeing what's out there for Price and Cespedes. He can want to play this out all he wants, but they have to at least be willing to listen on stuff in case something great is out there. The two KC trades suggests the market is significant for rental players at this point.

The chances of the Tigers being a bad team the next few years regardless of whether they sell this week are at least 50 percent. Trading Price and Cespedes might help them recover faster, but it wouldn't turn them into contenders again. They aren't contenders with those two guys on the team this year.

So if we trade Price we can thank Curt Casali.

I'm hoping a solid return from this deadline, a good pick with our top 10 pick in the draft and some progress from this year's draft class allowing us to trade for mlb talent next year puts us in position to surprise in '17.

Making a good trade (probably for pitching) for Price and Cespedes could certainly help in that endeavor, but it's meaningless unless we see much better versions of JV and Anibal next year.

Best case scenario in a sell off is we trade for a couple guys who contribute as either every day players or pitchers next year while the vets have one last hurrah, and then start to take the team over in 2017 if they're good enough in a rebuild on the fly scenario. That's a real best case scenario that involves Castellanos playing like this for a full season, Miggy staying healthy and getting some other luck on the young guys coming up, though.

Richard Justice was on MLB network earlier today and said that the Giants and Dodgers are holding out to see if Price became available before trading for a pitcher. Said it would be a full out bidding war with a huge return if they make him available.

I'm hopeful JV can learn how to pitch enough to be a solid 3-4 going forward and Anibal shakes of this year to be a solid 3-4, a trade target ends up being a solid 2 by '17, and we sign or trade for an ace next offseason. Along with maybe Greene or somebody in the system becoming a good 5. The lineup can be good enough in '17. And at some point drafting power arms sets up the bullpen. The lineup in '17 could still include Miggy, Victor and JD along with solid, affordable talent in Iggy, Castellanos, McCann, maybe Machado at 2B (he's hit better than his age in the minors) and potentially Moya and a FA or acquired CF.

    But that's best case.

I don't see what the Giants could offer that would make it a bidding war.

Good day for the organization; Toledo is down 13-1 in the 9th, so Bryan Holaday is pitching for them.

The Dodgers still seem like the best partner for a Price trade. I wonder if the Yankees would give us something of value for Soria.

Before a pitch is thrown today we're as close to the last place BoSox as we are to the 2nd WC Twins. As of now we'd pick 13th in the draft. Assuming we take Price, Soria and Cespedes away, at least, we could be in the top 10 in a couple weeks and end up with a REALLY good pick.

We're not getting Seager from LA, so what's a realistic deal there? Urias or De Leon + a couple more guys? Do the Dodgers need an outfielder, too?

Shame the Blue Jays about cleaned themselves out for Tulo.

Is it good that two of our picks this year are already in our Top 8 prospects (according to MLB prospect watch)?

    Royals beat writer

KC expressed interest in David Price last week, but found Detroit wasn't ready to deal. So the Royals jumped on Johnny Cueto, instead.

Haha, Archer strikes out the side in the second and already has 4 Ks. 24 pitches through 2 innings.

I wonder if both teams went out drinking last night.

JV matches him at 4 Ks through 2, also on 24 pitches.

I'm not going to do this all game, but that's quite a start for Verlander. I wonder if he's sick of all the bullshit and has decided to be JUSTIN VERLANDER for a day.

30th batter of the day gets the first hit - a dong by Asdrubel Cabrera. I'm assuming that will be the only hit of the game.

JV was one batter away from getting his ERA under 5.

I would like very much if Verlander had a good final 2 months, regardless of where we finish in the standings. Probably the most important thing that could happen for us.

JV pitching well at 93-95 MPH for an extended stretch would be fantastic news going forward.

He has to figure out how to command a fastball that's a tick below what it used to be, but the biggest problem I've seen the last couple years is the secondary stuff hasn't been close to what it was. If he gets his curve and change back, there's no reason he can't be a good #2 (at least) with velocity that's still above average for a starting pitcher.

If losing this game is what leads us to trade Price and give up the dream of contending, I'm all for this game ending 1-0 with us getting no hit.

I'm afraid that DD's biggest takeaway from that result would be "Verlander is back so we're back in business," though.

I had the same thought, but getting no hit and swept with Sanchez/Price/Verlander on the mound and Miggy at least a couple weeks away should be enough for everybody.

Tigers leading the Rays 2-1 through 7. As mentioned: Some teams sense the outcome of this game could push DET one way or the other w/ Price.

Lol if that turns out to be the case.

It's the difference between 3 games under and 5 under, maybe the difference between 3.5 to 5.5 out, and with evidence of Verlander being able to be effective or not. With our payroll and expectations and talent, I understand it. I'm sure selling at 3.5 games out with 2 months to play is a tough one to bear.

Of course, Justin is going to get through 8 and Ausmus is going to fire him out there for the 9th after 107 pitches and JV and Soria will end up blowing it.

Minnesota is losing in the sixth. Would put us back to 3.5 down if they lose. The Twins losing 4 in a row has more to do with us probably not selling now than anything else.

Yeah but there are still a lot of teams between us and MIN and that is my issue. I mean if BAL wins tonight and then beats us tomorrow we are now 5 games back of them.
