Yep, this is all going according to plan (to the best of our knowledge). Acquire at least 1 WR through free agency and at least one early in the NFL draft.
Yeah, hard to believe he got too much money upfront. I don't think this deters us from our anticipated plan of using a first or second rounder on another target. Depending on how much money he got, we still could be players for someone else in free agency like Vincent Jackson. I really hope we make an effort to resign Ginn for a decent price. Having him on the field with Vernon and Moss could give DCs some major headaches, depending on how effective Moss is, obviously. Crabtree could legitimately become a beast in that scenario.
They'll probably contact his agent and gauge his interest and asking price but I don't see them engaging in a bidding war.
Carlos Rogers' return is questionable and Cedric Griffin was released by the Vikings today. He'd be a logical target if Rogers' asking price is too high and they (Baalke and co.) keep to finding diamonds in the rough.
I just fear him breaking Alex when he returns. Harbaugh thinks it is move worth taking and he certainly has earned the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully the reports are correct and he has been as impressive as people have said in his workouts.
I really wanted Moss in NO. I'm not a fan of Harbaugh but I respect him as a coach. I think he'd tell Moss to pound sand if he starts becoming detrimental to the team.
Former Bronco CB Perrish Cox inks a 2 year deal with the 9ers. Likely means Rodgers is gone. Also signed a special teamer Tavares Gooden. Morgan about to sign with the Skins.
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter Reply Retweet Favorite · Open And now the 49ers also jumping in on Chiefs free-agent CB Brandon Carr.
Brandon Carr We're also supposedly after CB Eric Wright. Not overly familiar with him, but I think he's pretty decent. If Rogers leaves and we don't sign Carr, I think the Niners are pretty confident in moving Culliver into that spot and using Cox/Brock...for solid depth. I hate Dan Snyder. I would have liked a shot at Eddie Royal, and now they threw way too much money at Morgan.
Not a big fan of Wright he was pretty bad in Detroit. Not sure why we are so confident in losing Rodgers, no one is going after him. He must think he is getting paid somewhere though.
Eric Wright is a native to the City he would be coming home, but hes not a front line starter on elite defense
Rogers back at $7.3 million a year. Not sure on the length. At this point wouldn't mind dropping our first rounder and spending cash on Wallace.
Also lose Costanzo to the Bears. Awesome special teams player but 9ers didn't think he was versatile enough to keep around.
Great to have the entire band back together on defense. Sounds like we didn't really overpay for Rogers, either. Love the depth and possible return help that Cox now provides. Now we can gradually groom Culliver until he's ready to take over. Wallace is definitely tempting. We've obviously got a lot of options now in the draft. I still hope we'll at least make a decent offer with Ginn, though that's obviously primarily for return purposes.
Yeah not even sure what the cap situation is like once Alex officially inks. I would imagine our moves are pretty much done after that outside of a few low risk/high reward type players. Maybe get Fleener in the first round. Have Fleener as the big bodied receiver, Crabtree in the slot and Moss for vertical routes.
i like the Fleener move hes so versatile.........but why not swoop Manningham? good route runner, decent speed, great hands and not scared to go over the middle......upgraded version of Cuntree
49ers169, what's your impression in a scenario where Rogers resigns and Eric Wright signs; perhaps as a 4th CB? Nevermind, tough to see it with the signing of Cox and Tremaine Brock coming back.
Did the 49ers even inquire about Peyton Manning? Why doesn't he take a pay cut and go to a contender instead of going to a team that's rebuilding because he only has 3 - 4 years left in the NFL?
the OL for the Niners give up too many sacks........first or second time Manning gets blind sided hes good as dead and then what for the Niners?
From Maiocco and Barrows: Now, maybe we know why Alex Smith has yet to re-sign with the 49ers.Coach Jim Harbaugh worked out free-agent quarterback Peyton Manning and the former Indianapolis Colts quarterback took a physical for 49ers this week, ESPN reported Friday morning. The 49ers have kept their interest in Manning secretive, while he took public visits to meet with officials from the Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans. The reason why the 49ers have yet to sign quarterback Alex Smith yet became very clear Friday when reports surfaced that the team not only has shown interest in free-agent quarterback Peyton Manning.ESPN reported today that 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh flew to North Carolina on Tuesday to watch the 11-time Pro Bowl quarterback, who is recovering from multiple neck surgeries, throw. Until this point, the 49ers have been adamant that they only were interested in re-signing Smith, who is represented by the same agent,Tom Condon, that represents Manning. Condon obviously was would not have Smith, who guided the team to the NFC Championship gamein January, sign with the 49ers if they were then going to sign Manning.
The plot thickens... Eric Branch Also In Football Did Peyton Manning contact the #49ers? From SI story this week by @SI_JimTrotter: "The owner of one 2011 playoff team told SI that while his club was not pursuing Manning, it would seriously consider signing him (pending a positive medical report) if he phoned and said he wanted to play for them.”
Mario Manningham agrees to two-year deal with 49ers, per league source. -- ProFootballTalk (@ProFootballTalk)
Hope they didn't overspend, although I like the years. Not a true #1, but a nice piece and better than anything we had last year.
love this signing, Manningham a pretty smooth reciever!!! crabtree for short routes, manningham intermediate routes and VD + Moss working the deep part of the field???? VD will profit the most from this here, cuz you cant double team that nigha with Manningham and Moss roaming around on man coverage
Yeah, I agree. You can line Manningham out wide and Crabtree can play the slot, where he should be. Moss should draw attention away from VD too.
I would have been cool with Mario or B. Lloyd. I wonder if this is the nail in the Ginn coffin. Doesn't seem like people are exactly beating down Ginn's door. It will be very interesting to see how we approach the draft now.
Better sign Ginn just so I don't have to see the cocksucker who shall not be named returning punts again. Also, we resigned Josh Morgan yet?
