I mean in the first 6 months the dog bit him in the face and now he's got a handicap racing dog. My dog hasn't required surgery in the 2 years I've had her PTL but I'd imagine the recovery time for a surgery is a few months full of doc visits, medicine, and other special attention and money. Things don't work out sometime. Try and save another life. :idk:

When I got my dog I budgeted $100 a month for my dog...jax is probably averaging $1,000 a month right now. :rain:

She's out of surgery and getting her cast now. They'll call again once she's fully awake. Said she did great, unfortunately needed a bone graft which is going to add to the cost. But all that matters is she'll be better.

Well the face thing was my fault and the VA paid for it lol.

Her leg, what would I do? Nothing and have her be in pain and miserable for life? Give her back to the greyhound rescue where they would have to take money and fix her instead of spending it on saving a dogs life? Abandon her? If the surgery meant losing my house or car or feeding my family if I had one that's one thing. It seemed like a no brainier to me.

Also they are gonna give me a military discount so that will help and friends, family, the greyhound rescue and a couple TMB posters have already raised almost $500.

I tweeted the link at Arya from GoT, after all she's named after her direwolf. She'll probably never see it or read it but who knows. I've gotten a couple small donations from random people.

If somehow I raise more than the surgery/goal (doubtful but you never know what will go viral) I'll use this post to pledge all extra money to one or more animal charities. Someone quote me so it is seconded.

Took Nugget to the vet yesterday for a checkup, get some skin checked out (he has ridiculous allergies and always has a hot spot or two). He's about to turn 8, got him when he was a puppy my senior year of college. He's barely left my side since.

He has some small bumps (tumors?) starting to grow, vet wants to run some tests, cut them off, and get them tested. Also wants to cut some portion of his gums off (it's a boxer thing to have skin/gums grow over the teethe, or so I was told). The vet did not have me feeling warm and fuzzy at all, but I understand he has to temper expectations. Unfortunately, Nug takes cyclosporine, which is a very aggressive allergy drug that has evidence of accelerating a dog's life. 50% of dogs over 10 get tumors...Nug is almost 8 and may be starting to get tumors so...yea, not cool. Having said that, his demeanor hasn't changed one bit since a puppy---he's still rambunctious as hell and the happy-go-lucky dog he's always been, so that has me feeling pretty positive.

Nug is going under the knife next Tuesday. Will find out if it's cancer within a week. I always knew I'd have to face this eventually, and had always assumed it'd be sooner rather than later due to his allergy issues, and just issues with a boxer in general---but fuck, this sucks.

It should be expected when you get a greyhound to have some sort of leg/joint problem. They are so fragile. I know its not totally the same but I've known Italian Greyhounds to break their legs multiple times if they are not careful.

Its like having a spaniel and ear problems

Let me start off by saying I hope no one or their dog ever gets sick bc that's really mean but I just couldn't put 2k+ all at once into a dog.

Well probably 80-90% of dog owners out there would give the dog a good meal and start over so...

BOL and speedy recovery to M. Prayers sent to the dog and you bank account.

LeVar Burton we have differing opinions on this and most of my posting in general lol. But I hope your dog stays in good health and truly appreciate the good thoughts for Nymeria.

Also I don't read BOL but I'm scared of the response if I shared this with some of those mouth breathers.

Both vets yesterday think she had an injury at the track that they didn't tell the rescue about. They said they never see a retired racer at 2 years old. They generally race until 4-5 unless they get hurt. Her times were competitive too.

Anyone have any advice on shock collar training? I'm at the last straw with our dog. He's almost a year old and he still nips our clothes/toes/hands. It's not much, 4-5 times a day. He gets a lot of attention but we have a baby now and he still hasn't figured out that the world doesn't revolve around him.

He's half poodle and smart as shit. He's house trained and i teach him stuff all the time with treats and positive reinforcement, but it's hard to get the nipping/biting to go away with positive reinforcement I've read.

Wife will be feeding baby and he will come up on the couch and start nibbling on her arm or foot. Was thinking the shock collar would be a good way to help this. The fucker also won't quit jumping on guests when they come over.

He's an awesome dog. 9/10. It just gets to be a lot when baby is crying and dog decides he wants to eat you.

Have you tried squirting him with a water bottle first? I'm sure others will disagree, but I've always gotten the heebee jeebees on shock collars.

I know this was in jest, but they all do. They can't comprehend existence outside of their limited perception. That's why it's so sad to think about them sitting at home alone. :(

The water bottle worked for about 5 squirts. Then he thought it was the greatest thing ever. Was basically throwing Brer rabbit into the briar patch after that.

I'm not exactly happy about the shock collar option, but I'm at the end of the line I feel after trying treats, ignoring him, timeouts, etc...

Had to resort to using the Sportdog remote collars when the positive reinforcement just wasn't working anymore. Best money I have ever spent. It is nice to have some control over your dogs so they aren't going apeshit and jumping all over guests that come over/barking nonstop at neighbor dogs, etc. People often think of it as a 'shock' collar but really it's a vibrating collar, similar to getting a text message but much less intense. There are 7 levels (with high and low, so 14 total). I put it on my hand and couldn't feel the buzz until it got to 4 low. At this point, I rarely get past 3 with both my dogs.

She'll be fine with a shock collar. I was making sure she wasn't a shepherd, who would be doing the nipping out of herding instincts. They get their feelings hurt with negative reinforcement/corrective measures, so they're often counterproductive.

This has been the constant battle with my Ridgeback. They don't handle punishment well, so it has to be all about positive reinforcement.

Yeah man, that sportdog shock collar at cabellas is the ticket. It has a tone, vibrate, and 7 different levels of shock. She used to run thru the woods after squirrels and rabbits and not come back when I would call her. I finally broke down and bought one after I spent 2 hours one night watching Bonnie swim after a duck in a pond last December. I thought I was going to have to go in after her or she was going to drown from exhaustion and taking on water. After a day or two with the shock collar she was responding to just the tone feature and now we didn't even need the collar anymore. I never put Bonnie on a leash when we hike in the woods or walk at the greenway and she's an absolute queen.

Saved a stray mutt I found on the side of the road a few years ago. She's always been an escape artist, and is particularly impossible to keep up when it storms. But, she got out Monday during a storm. I left the office and was there no more than 15 minutes after, but she was gone. Haven't seen her since. :tebow:

paige is fine out of her crate during the day. doesnt tear anything up and generally naps/looks out the window while i am at work

the only issue is she has figured out how to open doors. only opens the doors leading to my room and to the spare room in my apartment. has done it in front of me twice when she thought i wasnt looking. but she does it every day when i am at work. it isnt a big deal now, but i will probably be having someone moving into that room soon and while i know she wont mess with their shit, i still dont want her exploring in someone else's room.

is there any idea on how to get her to stop doing that? i really dont want to have to start putting her in her crate again. she's not gonna tear up any shit someone has in there but it is more of a respect thing. how do i tell her that room is off limits? just started in the last week or 2 even tho she hasnt been crated since memorial day

My dog Luna had Kennel Cough sometime last year, can't remember exactly when. Basically stayed up all night cause she was hacking up clear foamy mucus. Only lasted the night. The next day she would sleep a lot. Basically gave her a little bit of soft dog food is what the vet said and some warm water with a little bit of honey.
