Sorry if already discussed, but is anybody going to DBT at the 40 Watt in January? I saw them for the first time at the GA theatre earlier this year and am now obviously hooked, so I will surely be going again.
Heard about these guys a long time ago but just gave them a real listen a couple weeks ago. Pretty fucking fantastic.. Alabama Pines is one of my favorite songs now.
It appears that longtime Drive-By Truckers guitarist John Neff has quit the band. Earlier today Neff posted a simple, direct statement on his Facebook page, which indicates, “Today I quit the Drive-by Truckers. Thanks for all the friendships. Let’s keep in touch.” Neff appeared on the group’s debut record, Gangstabilly and later joined the band in studio for Pizza Deliverance, and Decoration Day before becoming a full-time touring member of the group in 2006. At present the band has not issued a statement regarding his departure, however one as-yet-unconfirmed story making the rounds is that former Widespread Panic guitarist George McConnell was contacted about potentially joining the group for their three-night New Year’s Eve run at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, which kicks off on Saturday.
finally giving heat lighting rumbles in the distance a full listen. very very good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3BrtUrmZtQ
Well, that's pretty lame of Neff. Wonder what the reasoning was. Regardless, DBT is Patterson, Stroker Ace and the Easy B
normally I would be there every night, have been for each of these previously. with them now charging $30/night though I'm only going on saturday. should be a hell of a rock show Anybody getting the feeling that it's pretty difficult to get along with Patterson and/or Cooley? absolutely love the album, think it may even be better than Killers and Stars. The title track is my favorite, followed by 12:01, Come Back Little Star, Leaving Time, Disappear, forgetting the rest off the top of my head. for those who havent given it its due, listen a few more times. One of my favorites of this past year.
"Yo, that show this weekend? Yeah the one out of town over New Years. Fuck it, and fuck you. Check my fb for more info"
i forgot to post this story when i saw isbell at 40 watt a few weeks ago. but me and my buddy were standing up front in between opener and waiting for isbell and i see patterson walk in the bar. this was the day of the sec championship and i was in athens so i had been drinking since like noon. hood is standing at the bar and i go to go say "what's up patterson! want a bourbon?" he said no sir, its ok and i respond with no seriously i have a tab! he says no really its ok i'm good, and i just say its awesome to meet you and blah blah blah. but anyway, the entire show him and his wife are just standing next to me and my buddy just listening to isbell throughout. was ridiculous. the $2 24oz pbr did me in though
north miss allstars opening for them on nye at 40 watt, would be incredible http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=I2ZOToue35E
Friday Jan 18 - James McMurtry, Granada Theatre Dallas Saturday Jan 25 - Drive-by Truckers, Billy Bob's Ft. Worth
Do these two get along still? I don't really follow the band that closely (relationship wise) just listen to the music and have been to 4-5 shows. I would imagine the reason Isbell split from the band was Shawna, is that correct?
I'd imagine they still get along I wouldn't think Patterson would be there if he was upset or anything. It wasn't really a bad break up like it sounds like what happened with Neff. Shonna was a big reason but I think Isbell wanted to write more songs and stuff too. They've never really given a reason.
Yeah I remember he said it was an "amicable" split in the letter after Isbell left. Just curious as to whether or not he really meant it.
Have never seen McMurtry My uncle actually introduced me to him about 6-7 years ago, and my first listen of him was Choctaw Bingo from the live record.
I believe that same duo came to Charlotte, but it was on a Wednesday or something and I couldn't make it
first time Isbell played solo in Athens he covered Patterson's song "Assassin" I was standing next to Patterson, Cooley and Brad and Patterson started to tear-up. After the show all three walked back stage. The split to me was due to two major factors: Shonna and Jason's divorce and Jason being a talent too big to contain in a group that already had two big talents.
Unfortunately I just heard of Jason Isbell last week but I've been listening to his "Live From Alabama" album nonstop. My question is what can I kop that is similar to him? I've listened to one Drive By Truckers song in my life and wasn't really a fan. Maybe I should give it a second chance?
To me, the slower albums I would recommend would be Go-Go Boots and Pizza Deliverance. Those are probably easier to listen to in order to get acclimated I could just be full of shit though. Give those a try
I think there was a lot of contention on A Blessing and a Curse because of it. They're obviously on good terms now though and both having a lot of success
What's remarkable is that three tremendous storytellers were once in the same group But yes, Isbell is the heat sack
I guess I might like the more country sound of Jason as opposed to a more rock sound of DBT? Not sure though as I have extremely limited knowledge of both.
I would throw Gangstability in there as well. The Living Bubba, Wife Beater, 18 Wheels of Love, Panties in Her Purse etc would all fit the qualification
Ehh I'd say more mellow. Goddamn Lonely Love and Alabama Pines were just a couple that stuck out to me on the LFA album. Like a country Mumford & Sons if that makes any sense? Perhaps I should just put on some nice headphones so I can get a grasp for the depth and texture of the songs, right .Ephermal. .Gardens.?
Okay, are you looking for Isbell's DBT songs or songs similar to that style. Cooley has some really good stuff that's more country honk than rock and Hood has some songs that are kind of the same pacing but darker Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife for example
Start listening to everything and see what you like. Once you find your favorites then you can go to the deeper stuff and then everything is the best. Not a day goes by now where I don't listen to at least 5 DBT/Isbell songs. Decoration Day is my personal favorite album. Daddy Needs a Drink and Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife are some slower Hood songs. And Cooley, well, you should go ahead and listen to everything he sings.
That's how it was with me and Isbell. His DBT songs were my absolute favorites but it took me a while to get into his solo stuff
