Fun fact: Dickie Betts son joined Dawes. I noticed this strange looking guy popping up on a lot of their live performances and then it hit me that his demeanor was almost identical to Betts and sure enough it's his son.
if want a ticket you better buy soon more than half way sold out in 45min. codes are. Something didnt work for me SOMETHING SOUTH FRAMES TURTLE
Something More Than Free video came out recently. Woof. http://www.cmt.com/videos/jason-isbell/1222135/something-more-than-free.jhtml The chorus already sounded Rascal Flats-esque to me; video doesn't help.
Not sure about the rascal flats comp but I could've done without the random singing along of the people in the video. A bit odd for sure
I think we all know that the video wasn't made for people like us. But if it helps drive record sales who cares
bought the vinyl from a local record store. i support artists and small business. my hipster smug is through the roof.
After a couple months to let it sink in, I'm really enjoying Something More Than Free. It might not be Southeastern-level good, but it's just a tick behind. I have a few friends who actually like it better. He's developed a Cooley-esque ability to ride the perfect line between the abstract and concrete, and drop those lines in there where you think to yourself, "Nobody else would write that."
NPR has a recording of Isbell's setlist from Newport Folk Fest. http://www.npr.org/event/music/4265...=nprmusic&utm_term=music&utm_content=20150726 Setlist: "Palmetto Rose" "Stockholm" "Something More Than Free" "24 Frames" "Codeine" "The Life You Chose" "Speed Trap Town" "Cover Me Up" "Children of Children" "Alabama Pines" "Different Days" "Super 8"
They'll be putting up a lot of sets from the festival in the coming days. They'll also publish them on the iTunes podcast app. I have a bunch from the '14 festival for car rides.
I actually don't mind it at all live, it's just so badly misplaced on Southeastern that it's hard to enjoy.
He always closes sets with Super 8 too and he could do so much better. I get going out on something upbeat but give me Never Gonna Change or Like a Hurricane or something. Maybe even a slightly slower song that's got a crazy good solo like GDLL or Decoration Day.
While I'm thinking about it, DBT has been doing kind of the opposite by closing with Grand Canyon. It's a good song and I know it's got a lot of meaning to them but give me Let There Be Rock or 18 Wheels of Love
I'd walk away from that set pissed about not seeing Flying over water, Outfit, or goddamn lonely love. I've seen him three times and he's played those each time. I figured flying over water would be one of the songs from his old set that made the cut. Does he ever play the day John Henry died?
Yeah, Flying Over Water should be played instead of Super 8. It's just a much better song musically and lyrically. I know these two aren't really hits but Go It Alone and However Long should be set staples too, imo
Article on the upcoming live album, and can listen to Birthday Boy from it. http://www.npr.org/sections/thereco...ive-by-truckers-to-release-massive-live-album
I wonder how big "massive" is. Hopefully it's like 4 discs. And It's Great To Be Alive means that there's a 100% chance that World of Hurt is on there
Does Isbell ever say why he doesn't play The Day John Henry Died? Did he not exclusively write that song?
I was at the friday show for DBT at the Fillmore, except I was only there to see Sturgill open then went to another show to see The Weeks at a a dive bar
Also I think it may be more to do with everyone actually want to purchase the album wanting to support Jason and indie records instead of just downloading it
