I think we can all agree that Jon is one of the favorites in the series...So basically Jon's fate is ambiguous if you have read the last book...MY question is where do we go from here? We have the different theories that are all plausible if we can all assume he is deff coming back in some fashion.. So lets go with that...lets assume he is still alive in some way... Is Martin setting up this character to effect the ending? How do you see Jon's story playing out towards the end?

Jon is the Prince that was Promised.

and Bran will be the catalyst.

Its been hinted at so much at this point it would be bad writing, in my opinion, if Jon wasn't the son of Rhaegar. I don't know if that makes him the prince who was promised, but the fact that he's dead, or the closest out of the main characters to being dead, make him the most likely to be Azor Ahai reborn.

is there supposed to be a difference between Azor Ahai reborn and the prince that was promised?

Who knows at this point, but I didn't gather anything concrete from the book they HAVE to be the same person. And it wouldn't surprise me if GRRM wanted us to assume that the prince who was promised and Azor Ahai reborn are the same person, only to drop on us later that they aren't.

I always assumed the would be the same person.

"There will come a day after a long summer when the stars bleed and the cold breath of darkness falls heavy on the world. In this dread hour a warrior shall draw from the fire a burning sword. And that sword shall be Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes, and he who clasps it shall be Azor Ahai come again, and the darkness shall flee before him."

Also, do we discuss if Aegon is fake in this thread or the book 5 thread?

    wherever I guess.

if Aegon is a fake I'm just really confused by Vary's role in it. he says that Aegon has been groomed to lead his entire life so I would assume he's been in on that from the start, but he was working with Illyrio in book one to set things up for Viserys. Aegon would be the rightful heir, not Viserys so that seems inconsistent. maybe Varys was just playing Illyrio, but I don't see the point in that. maybe they were both playing Viserys to gain the Dothraki army, but I'm not sure how that plan was supposed to work either. it works nicely now if they can get Dany and Aegon together, but Viserys would have fucked that plan up royally if he was still alive.

Well, originally I thought the prophecy about the mummer's dragon meant Aegon was fake, but really I think it just means Varys's dragon since he was a mummer for a while in Essos. Also, I can't decide if Dany's vision about the song of ice and fire being Aegon's is a red herring or means that Aegon has a very, very big part to play.

love the idea that mummer's dragon means Vary's dragon. never made that connection.

I'm thinking he will be a red herring in the end, but I have nothing to prove it other than intuition. So many ambiguous story lines in this series I'm not sure how Martin has all of this planned out.

I am anxious/worried that GRRM's treatment of John could wreck the whole series. I would hate to see Jon come back as some sort of a zombie, and I don't see how he won't be, given the way he was attacked.

I think it is pretty clear he will be back, and at some point he will be standing atop the wall in obsidian armor swinging a flaming sword against thousands of "Other" spiders.

Yeah, I probably would stop reading if Jon became a Lady Stoneheart type zombie.

I'm too invested for basically anything to keep me from finishing the series, but if he ruins Jon then I probably won't like whatever happens. Doubt he ruins Jon though

I am too familiar with GRRM to actually believe that last sentence

Welp, just read that GRRM didn't like the fact that Gandalf came back from the dead and thought the story was stronger with him staying dead. He also said that he didn't like that Gandalf comes back more powerful than he died. So basically I think we can rule out Jon coming back as an other killing super savior.

    In addition:

"My characters who come back from death are worse for wear. In some ways, they're not even the same characters anymore. The body may be moving, but some aspect of the spirit is changed or transformed, and they've lost something. One of the characters who has come back repeatedly from death is Beric Dondarrion, The Lightning Lord. Each time he's revived he loses a little more of himself. He was sent on a mission before his first death. He was sent on a mission to do something, and it's like, that's what he's clinging to. He's forgetting other things, he's forgetting who he is, or where he lived. He's forgotten the woman who he was once supposed to marry. Bits of his humanity are lost every time he comes back from death; he remembers that mission. His flesh is falling away from him, but this one thing, this purpose that he had is part of what's animating him and bringing him back to death. I think you see echoes of that with some of the other characters who have come back from death.

for the tl;dr crowd: Jon is as good as zombie if he actually dies :ohnoes:

But here is the thing, Jon isn't really normal he from all accounts is possibly a warg. So if he does in fact die his soul will take on another form till his human body comes back (red witch). That's why he is a diff case than the lightning lord if that were to happen.

But if he doesn't come back in his normal body his lineage is effectively moot.

Yes but my thinking is he will come back to his original body and be completely sane because he is a warg.

I could see this. But I still don't like the idea of him being less than human. Even if he's all there mentally, I feel like Lady Stoneheart shows they aren't human.

This may turn out to be an obvious indicator, but who knows? GRRM is a different kind of guy and he may contradict himself just to challenge himself as a writer. I just hope he cares enough to make whatever he does with JSnow good and not anticlimactic, whether he kills him, wargs him,or he is not actually dead. As for what GRRM thinks of what Tolkein did with Gandalf:Gandalf is a lesser spiritual being in essence. I suppose Tolkein could have sharted him out as Obi Wan type ghost advisor,or just removed him from the scene completely;but I think he ultimately did the right thing for that story, whether it was plot repair or not.
