Ned and Robert were wards together at the Vale under Jon Arryn's protection, similar to how Theon Greyjoy is a ward at winterfell only it wasn't because of a rebellion. Robert and Ned became best friends and Robert was eventually promised to marry Ned's sister Lyanna Stark, while Ned's brother Brandon was to marry Catelyn Tully. Littlefinger, in love with Cat challenged Brandon to a duel and almost died from his wound. About 6 months to a year before Robert's rebellion, there was a great tournament at Harrenhal (a castle you will see next season). At this tourney Jamie Lannister became the youngest Kingsguard member ever and Rhaegar Targaryen made Lyanna Stark the princess of beauty by laying his favor at her feet (a crown of blue winter roses). Rhaegar was already married to Elia Martell and she already had a daughter with him and soon to have a son. This caused an outrage kinda as Rhaegar fell in love with Lyanna, the woman Robert was to marry. Eventually it spread that Lyanna was with Rhaegar in the south. Brandon and a handfull of his best men rushed to King's Landing to demand Rhaegar show himself. He was not there but Aerys the Mad King had Brandon and his men arrested for "conspiring to murder the prince". Aerys sent for the fathers of each of these men to answer for their crimes, but instead killed the fathers and the sons. He had Rickard Stark burnt alive while tying a cord around Brandon's neck and placing a sword just out of his reach, telling him that if he could get the sword to cut himself free he could take his father Rickard and leave. Brandon choked himself to death trying to free his father as a young Jamie Lannister and 500 men watched on in silence. Aerys then sent a raven to Jon Arryn demanding Ned and Robert come to King's Landing to be "put on trial" as well. Jon Arryn summoned the Knights of the Vale and sent Ned to Winterfell to gather an Army and Robert to Storm's End to do the same. Ned fought his way South and Robert fought his way West. Jon Arryn also got the Tully's to join the Rebellion by offering Ned to marry Cat in dead Brandon's place. The Tully's joined with Ned and eventually they all met at the River Trident, were Rhaegar made his last stand. Robert killed Rhaegar with his hammer and sent Ned south to King's Landing to siege the Red Keep. By the time Ned was there, Jamie killed Aerys, Amory Lorch and the Mountain killed Rhaegar's wife and children under Tywin's command and Viserys and Dany were taken to Dragonstone for their safety. Shortly after, Robert became King, named Jon Arryn his hand and Jon suggested Robert marry Cersei as Lyanna was found dead in the south at the Tower of Joy. hope that sums it up
No one knows for sure. Ned never liked to talk about it in the book it just says he found her in a bed covered in blood.
I'm only 1/4 of the way through book 1, but it seems Rhaegar kept her prisoner and raped her nightly, and she died of a fever soon after Ned found her and made him promise to bury her in the Stark crypt under Winterfell. Edit: or maybe she had been stabbed as the Red Keep fell to the alliance like Irush said.
Another note on this. The reason Rickard Stark was burnt alive was because King Aerys got to choose a champion for himself, like Tyrion did with Bronn at the Eeyrie, and said that fire was the champion of House Targaryean. Just shows how batshit crazy he was.
I didn't really get the sense after getting through book 1 that she was a prisoner, I think there's more to it than that.
Yeah I'm only 300 pages deep into it (and man has 95% of this bastard been stale so far, but I'm sure it doesn't help I know the basic plot of it), but that's the impression the reader has been given so far.
If I had only watched the show I would have hated to read the last couple pages Pretty cool list though: GoT Top 10 Kills
someone please tell me that the entire Lannister family except for Tywin are graphically murdered.....I'd love to see Rob Stark kill Joffery with an over and under chainsaw/flamethrower.....TIA
how many POVs are in book 3? cause I'm downloading a torrance and it says there are only 39 which is considerably lower than the past 2. Dont want to look it up in order to avoid possible spoilers

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER Spoiler So has anyone else rewatched the first episode several times to see if you can figure out which one is the one in hiding that joined King Robert along their trip to Winterfell?
450 pages into book 2 and im enjoying it alot more then book one since i knew what was going to happen in book 1 from watching the show.
Oh, definitely. But I will be quite interested to see if they actually did do it, or if they will just explain it or something.
Yeah, I am about 100 pages ahead of you and the last 200 pages or so have been ridiculous. Can't put it down. Even the Spoiler Bran and Sansa POV's have gotten interesting. Spoiler Tyrion is so money and Spoiler Dinklage is going to knock that shit out of the park next season.
This thread needs to be killed with fire, why the fuck would we be talking about Lyanna dying in a show thats scope is the first book?
Yea but **spoiler** Spoiler They show didn't focus on it at all, they left out all of the parts about Ned focusing on her saying "promise me Ned Promise me" over and over and the flashback he had while in the dungeons about his fight with the 3 members of the Kingsguard at the Tower of Joy, the stuff about her being given Rhaegars favor at the tourny at Harrenhall (although it was spoiled on another page) at this point there really has been no signs pointing to childbirth, so they could be setting that up to be a huge part in another season and don't want showfags thinking about it at this point in time. JMO I'm just saying I wouldn't want to know or have people speculate on stuff especially after having read the other books and have a lot lot more information than what was just given in the show, which was pretty much nothing.
I don't mind people talking about stuff in here that is outside the scope of the first book since there's no other place if you haven't read all four, but I just ask that people err on the side of caution with spoiler tags and try to label their spoilers so people who are in the process of reading know what they can and cannot view.
Truthfully none of the stuff being discussed is mentioned as something of importance in the show or even early on. Its not until later that you start to think that it matters and things flesh out so it could be considered spoiler material
all i did was sum up the rebellion because someone asked and basically go when someone asked more about Lyanna
I see your point, but many showfags have requested further info provided in Book 1 that wasn't in the show, and I though we all agreed that that wasn't necessarily spoiler. The reason this thread has turned into a quasi book thread is because those of us that simply began as showfags, are starting to read the books, and there isn't anywhere else to talk about it until we finish all four.
yes there is, just no one uses it, everyone would rather keep using this thread and have everyone bitch http://mainboardsoiaf.proboards.com/
