RIP Don Simons http://whnt.com/2015/05/13/don-simons-iconic-huntsville-businessman-and-generous-donor-dies/
If you're a motivated seller, I'm a motivated buyer. I'm open 6 days a week and I'd be proud to have your business.
So I have a friend that is in med school at UAB and is doing his rotational thing at Huntsville Hospital. He somehow or another is living with a 95 year old woman named Eleanor something who owns one of the mansions downtown on Williams. They're family friends or something. Anyway, she is descended from the Bibbs, the first and second governors of Alabama, and her father, grandfather, and great grandfather were all mayors of Huntsville. Apparently she was a founder of Randolph. The house was built in 1819 and there are five acres of land in the back. I had no idea that kind of empty land existed in downtown Huntsville. It's so huge we're talking about building a couple golf holes in the back yard. She used to own the house next door but donated it to UAH to become the president's mansion. We went down into the basement and you can see where some of the slave quarters and stuff used to be. She has two cooks and three servants and she'll sit down at the dining room table and ring a bell and the servants will bring her meals and stuff. It's like aristocracy stuff.
The Lowe house is the one the UAH president lives in. I assume the house you are talking about is to the left. Nice houses all around that area.
Eleanor Hutchens. The property backs up almost all the way to cruise alley. There are tennis courts in the back. The house I grew up in backs right up to the tennis courts. She used to let us play whenever we wanted. Fun fact, she had the tennis courts built to appease her lesbian lover a long time ago. Did she tell you the five acres figure? Its a lot of land but that seems excessive.
Has anyone used the grubsouth delivery service yet? Sometimes i can be a little lazy to go grab something if me or the wife doesn't cook. So i was wondering if they had a fast delivery time or was it pretty normal like a steak out or pizza delivery service.
I just found out about it looking at beauregards menu. Then i went to the site and it has multiple restaurants on there that they will go to and deliver the food to your home.
Due to the time of the post and all caps I'm assuming this inquiry was for drunk food... Which sounds amazing.
Grubsouth is awesome, will deliver within an hour, but can get pricey after tax, delivery fee, and tip. FYI Matt Ragland was my friend. Church was, let's say, "well over" capacity for his service. I wonder if I know any of you HSV fools...
I'll tell you restaurants/bars that my friends own that I frequent and may interest you: Voodoo Lounge - Formerly Judge Crater's or The Tavern, laid back underground bar on the Square that has a blues vibe but is open to other live acts Amendment XXI - "Top Shelf" kind of place, where you dress nicer and pay more for your drinks to keep the riff raff out; I consider myself riff raff half the time, so this is when I take my hat off, wear a buttondown, and drink Woodford on the rocks all night Old Town Beer Exchange - New place on Holmes, they have 20 taps always changing; think "melting pot" of all the craft breweries starting to emerge around Alabama. Pet friendly, also sell beer and wine. Yellowhammer Brewery - Home of my favorite beer outside of Sam Adams, the Lost Highway is a delicious black lager. Really cool place, but the big news is the future home of YB and Straight To Ale will be the old Stone Middle School, complete with a restaurant and...something else he told me that I can't remember Beauregards - Under new ownership, they decided to close down the Jordan Lane location and focus on better food and experience. Have had their new wings twice lately, and I'll order more again. Doubt anyone beats my fave jerk wings from Baumhowers, though Original Public House - Same owners as above, traditional Irish fare in a MUCH nicer environment than the crusty bar it replaced, Finnegans. Really good food here Sorry to derail the topic. As you were.
I know the new owner of Beauregards & the Public House. They're really trying to improve Beauregards. Ate at the Jordan lane location twice a week when I lived near there. Still remember the phone #.
JokerEyez5, Well not sure how anyone puts a list together and fails to mention Bandito on Governors. But the fact you listed Voodoo A1 redeems the post.
I think there's enough restaurants to get buy on in this town. Cotton Row's short ribs are the best meal in HSV :amirite:
Go get the smoked chicken burrito plate with a chile relleno or a combo burrito and call it dinner tonight.
That meant to say owners, not others, which is why I never listed it. I'm familiar with Bandito, I always get the green chile burrito.
I'll chime in on the must haves: Viet Huong across from Madison Square Mall. I don't know if you boys do pho or not, but when you scoff at Vietnamese food and a naked half Colombian/half Puerto Rican woman tells you to go, you go. Got rid of her, but I kept the visits to VH going. Keep it simple and get the beef pho or the chicken pho. Best soup you'll have in Huntsville. Mama Annie's over near the A&M campus has legit comfort food, too.
Have any of y'all went to sidelines? It's more sports bar but the food is pretty good. And it's a former Bama players that co-owns it.
