So recently, my wife found out about this website Book of the Month (https://www.bookofthemonth.com/) - you pay a fee for one month, three, or 12. And with each increase in months, the price drops down. A bunch of people curate books that aren't huge national bestsellers and put together a list of five books each month. You choose one (they're all hardcover) + you can buy old books of the month for only $10. I got in at the end of May and actually paid have price on the three month deal, so I'll get three books for like $22 total. Pretty damn pumped. It's actually where I heard of this month's book that I recommend. Anyway... Noah Hawley, creator of Fargo, put out a new book yesterday called Before the Fall. Apparently it's really awesome and a great read. And it's one of the books available this month. Can't wait to read it.
End of Watch + Chuck Klosterman's new book just arrived in my mailbox. So damn excited, looking forward to knocking out both of these.
For July, Heard about this on a podcast. Sounds pretty good. Serial killer in 1930s Chicago finds a time portal and back and forth in time killing people https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16131077-the-shining-girls
This one actually sounds good. You dumped some retread of Gone Girl (or Girl On A Train) on me this month that is getting ~3.5 / 5 reviews.
That sounds awesome. Much better than the current selection anyway (although to be fair I am not far in yet).
Same here. Expecting big things for book club the next 2 months. I feel like he havent had this level of interest in the choices for a while.
All kidding aside, I posted this in the June thread in regards to how we choose books and figured I'd throw it in here: Looking at this specifically, I agree, and not just because I recommended this book and most response has been pretty lukewarm. But the way monthly picks have worked lately is the best its been since the early days. Participation is WAY down from what it used to be, but voting on books that were recommended started going down to the point where someone throwing out a book and one or two people saying "sounds good" became the way we've done it. And maybe it's a chicken or egg thing with participation = the process of choosing books. I'm all for making it better/getting more people to read. Just need to figure out how.
Hey, I liked your book. Just happens that Im in the minority. We should do a Book Nominator power rankings. See who's had the best suggestions. Im bored enough @ work I might just do that now
I've now ordered The Shining Girls, so don't go changin' things on me in the future. I'm pretty sure I'll be at the bottom of that list Truman. Though there may have been only 3 people that actually read Washington's Crossing, so . . .
Anyone heard of The Bees? I want to read this Game of Drones. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18652002-the-bees?ac=1&from_search=true
Literally logged on while killing time before I get ready and got an alert. Thanks man! Looking forward to it.

So I've been trying to remember what book we read in March of '15. I don't believe I read it and I think we lost the thread in the crash. It was either No Angel: My Harrowing Journey Into the Center of the Hell's Angels by Jay Dobyns or A Spy Among Friends: Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal - Ben Macintyre for some reason I want to say we read both of these books, or maybe they were nominated against each other. Can't remember.
I know I read both. I think both were in the vote that month and the group chose A Spy Among Friends.

I blame DotA2 for my absence. Hell of a drug. That and trying to read both Wheel of Time (on book 7) and Dark Tower (book 4) at the same time. I'll plan on reading Dark Matter and maybe sneaking in this month's as well if it was good (LKRFN88jp ). Also if someone could send me them id appreciate it fams.
I thought Wheel of Time got pretty slow right around #7. Hang in there through #10 (the worst of the series). The last four are incredible, with #11, #12, and #14 being three of my favorite books.
I've been meaning to read this book for a while. I have a friend who suggested it. Sounds out there enough that I thought it may make a good book club book. Here's the link and description. "In this hyperkinetic and relentlessly inventive novel, Japan’s most popular (and controversial) fiction writer hurtles into the consciousness of the West. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the Worlddraws readers into a narrative particle accelerator in which a split-brained data processor, a deranged scientist, his shockingly undemure granddaughter, Lauren Bacall, Bob Dylan, and various thugs, librarians, and subterranean monsters collide to dazzling effect. What emerges is simultaneously cooler than zero and unaffectedly affecting, a hilariously funny and deeply serious meditation on the nature and uses of the mind." Goodreads Amazon
Where are we for September? I don't actually have a suggestion (except for books others have already read like All the Light We Cannot Unsee) but it will help me plan my next read before the 1st.
I'm okay with the book RegimentML posted. Anyone have other thoughts? Books I've recently acquired the audiobook of through audible deals that I think would be a good read: Ubik - Philip K. Dick https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22590.Ubik?ac=1&from_search=true Jurassic Park - Michael Crichton https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6424171-jurassic-park?ac=1&from_search=true
Im down with all 3. Regiment's sounds good. I read Jurassic Park as a kid but would read again (iirc the movie played it pretty close to the book) Only Dick book Ive read was Man in the High Castle and didnt love it, but will give him another shot
Woah, big block of image coding in my message up top. Not sure what broke the link. Would edit, but no longer able.
Lets read RegimentML 's suggestion. Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World - Haruki Murakami Any objections (which must come with another suggestion) must be given by noon tomorrow or else this will be the choice.
Now that it's officially official, Im excited about this book. Way outside what I normally read. Sounds super trippy.
Agreed. Not sure what to expect. But its description sounded like something that could generate some good discussion.
I finished my last book this morning so I'm just going to start on my train home. Looking forward to it.
Finished Dark Matter last night and loved it. Need a new book as I have a flight to Denver on Friday morning. Should I start the Waywood Pines trilogy? Other options that I saw on Goodreads: The Passage: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6690798-the-passage - not sure if I'm in the mood to read this long of a book right now. The Shining Girls: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16131077-the-shining-girls - mixed reviews on GR. Open to other suggestions....here is my Goodreads profile (do we share those here?) in case you want to know what I read: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/882255-ryan-cragg?shelf=read
The Passage is one of my favorite books. It's the first in the trilogy. It's a longer read. The Shining Girls is a quick read. Just ok. I feel like there's an amazing book in there somewhere, the author just didnt hit on it. You can join us in the book club this month if you want too Going off the books you have rated high - I recommend The Book Thief, since you had All the Light We Cannot See ranked pretty high
LKRFN88jp I know you'll be all over this one next week https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28450861-tv-the-book
