eHo I thought you were a guitar player. Am I remembering that wrong or did you branch out into drums?
I'm a guitar player who likes to think I could play drums really well if I just put in more time. Translation: I'm highly mediocre at drums, but I have a lot of fun banging on them. I've only played guitar in bands.
tried hooking up the Korg AX1500G for the first time in probably 3.5 years. sounded all kinds of fucked up. it hasn't been banged up or anything. dusty as hell but I don't know why it just wouldn't work... sadpanda. hard to even explain what's wrong with it. no matter how i play with the settings it's like it's stuck on heavy grunge phaser mode. fuckin a
I always get overloaded by those multieffects processors. I can't handle that many options, because I can never settle on one. They are a lot of fun to play with, but I could never use one live.
I haven't ever gotten too into them either. This one was a gift / hand me down from my older brother who has the whole home studio / producing thing. I'm pretty sure there is a way to download something to a jump drive and and upload it to the thing and go ahead and just have settings. IIRC the processor was endorsed by Joe Satriani and I remember when he gave it to me saying there was something along those lines available with like 50 presettings designed by joe. just gonna have to get a little facetime with older brother on how to configure it or maybe take it somewhere to get fixed if there's something wrong. I kinda factored in the thing working when I bought my amp because I like reverb options. so I'll either figure out how to fix that thing or just buy a decent distortion pedal and a reverb/delay pedal. What I really want is to upgrade from the Boss RC-20xl looping station to the 30 or 300. get a microphone and be able to loop acoustic/voice effects/electric/keyboard. no homo Ed Sheeran does some badass looping stuff. listen to live recordings of him looping songs regularly as cheese dick as some of his songs are... this is clean and impressive AF
We are same. I love playing drums. Sometimes I can think of more than I am able to play but it's fun to work at it
Finally decided which guitar was appropriate for me. Bought an Alvarez AD60CE. I have loved learning and practicing. The guitar had always frustrated me because it is the only instrument that I could not really pick up quickly. 15 years later, youtube has made learning at my own pace much more accessible. I am loving it so much that I bought a Michael Kelly A style mandolin. Really hoping that my future kids will enjoy music as much as I do. I play the drums and piano at a mediocre level. I would love to be able to play music with them one day. If not, I have spent money to buy mid level instruments that I enjoy playing.
Turning the kid into a musical prodigy is at the top of my list for reasons to want a kid. He'll be listening to music as soon as he's conceived and playing a guitar as soon as he can hold one. I'll hold off on the dope smoking to an appropriate age like 10
Some tower of power, some little richie, some gospel chops, some jamiroquai and galactic and j dilla, he'll be great
Don't know if there's a jazz thread but figured the posters ITT could probably appreciate more than others. Going to see Chick Corea and Bela Fleck on 4/15. Pretty excited about that. Lots of talent between two people
Not a jazz fan usually but would absolutely check out that performance. Both players have a lot more flavor/idiosyncrasy than average jazz cats. I get bored w jazz sometimes but that should be an exciting performance
seen bela fleck 3 times and he never disappoints. having the wooten on bass helped though. more pumped about seeing Chick. guy is a legend and it's a really intimate venue - Paramount Theater. seats in the 4th row on the right where the gentleman in the white shirt is sitting Spoiler
Does anyone itt own a high end keyboard and if so which one. More interested in the synthesizer/drum machine aspect than the classical piano
I don't. Wish I had the time to learn. This guy is good. https://www.instagram.com/p/BDwQUwVqlq4/ https://www.instagram.com/p/BDRCzAdqlgJ/ https://www.instagram.com/p/BDMG1Owqltd/
I don't but ever since I saw Just Blaze use one of those newer Native Komplete Kontrol S's on Rhythym Roulette, I've been kind of salivating.
Well, hop-hop drumming has kinda stagnated, to me, since like the Big Tymers. A lot of beats that people would call "hot" are really loud 8th notes on the hi hats until the downbeats on a really tight snare, maybe some 32nd notes as fills on the hi hats. I like to blame it on Drake's shitty #hashtag flow and delivery because I hate him but I know it's not true - he just codified it for what would end up being a decade of droll boring shit. Anyway, the beats I'm talking about are stuff you'd hear Wayne or Young Thug rap over. Death Grips has an entire band behind it and somehow manages to be cohesive in spite of being unhinged. The drummer's really good though so there's a lot of thought into how it fits into the productions Though if there's an artist that's ripe for sampling thoughtful piano stuff for hip hop, like say a Lupe Fiasco-type beat, there's a fucking treasure trove of stuff by Ryuichi Sakamoto Seriously, take almost any 8 to 16 measures of this song, maybe slow it down a bit, cut out some flourishes, add a bass track and some female vocals, have some parts maybe played on guitar, you're golden. The right producer can make some neat stuff with this as a backbone, I think. But I'm weird, so
Can I Spliff it Saw Zach Hill play for Team Sleep like a decade ago. Was life changing, as a drummer.
Guitar for about 7-8 years. Mostly electric. I've got a show coming up where I'll be jamming on some tunes by Satriani, Gilbert, Bonamassa, and an amazing(ly unknown) guitarist named Steffen Schackinger. Amp sucks, but I found a Kramer 84 Baretta at a local GC that is now mah baby. I also cover a lot of music from the bands I listen to, and most recently those bands have been Alice in Chains, Extreme, Skid Row, and King's X (terribly underrated). Ty Tabor of King's X is incredible. I thought the same of Jerry Cantrell when I started listening to AiC in-depth (and Cantrell's solo stuff - mainly Degradation Trip, which is a masterpiece). Wish more people knew about Tabor.
Yea, I have very little interest in trap and trap-esque production, to clarify. I was really just suggesting that the folks messing with drum machines/samplers, or even fucking around with FL Studio should say some more about what they are up to, since a few people suggested that they were.
On this note, anyone fuck around with recording and whatnot? I use Reaper because it's cheap, what about anyone else?
Also got tickets to go see Black Violin in 3 weeks. Drums, DJ, Cello, 2 violins, and a lot of swag. everyone that saw them at SXSW said they were badass Pumped about that too. Seen the Mad Violinist several times and always enjoyed the style Wouldn't mind some kind of setup like the FB video above where I could play a backing track, add a beat to it, and then play piano/guitar over it.
Lana Del Ray squanders fantastic production to sing about droll nonsense, though I can't tell if that's deliberate or not. Grimes is also great for production
See i dont know whether it's making the lyrics marketable for "rebellious" kids, like, as an example, just saying smoking weed by the beach, or if it's your position. It'd be a lot more apparent if it were a harder drug or something to give that 'wink.' But then again inhabiting that safe/not-safe middle ground instead of choosing the theme outright would be part of the ennui with a postmodern perspective
Lana is not breaking any new ground, but she is way more interesting in terms of vibe than most people. The Hollywood Babylon/Valley of the Dolls stuff has been done before, but there is a legit self-loathing element that she brings. She has a touch of elegance to go along with her cliched shit, and she does have great production to go along with the content. She wants to be a more gangster Nancy Sinatra, and I wouldn't argue with anyone aiming for that, especially considering the mainstream music landscape.
Yeah I had kinda considered that but honestly I couldn't convince myself of it for whatever particular reason. Dunno what exactly I bought a couple new pairs of sticks (one marching snare (harmon series or whatever), one american classic) since mine are now a decade or so old. Vic Firth also sells 'practice pad' tip covers so you can practice on any surface without leaving marks and being relatively quiet. It's pretty nice to just spend 20 or so minutes running sloppily through rudiments
so much want....... Thinking about pre-ordering one for June deliver. Really not bad for $300. And I can just call it my birthday present to myself
I feel like that's one of those things that would be cool to have, but would be difficult as hell to really learn how to integrate it with your guitar playing. I might be off on that though. The concept is badass.
Bad news. New drummer has a conflict on our bar gig, so we have to play with the old drummer. That means we won't unveil these two until May, unless we get drunk at a friend's wedding next weekend and decide to bust them out at the end of the night. Stay tuned. I may try to record a rehearsal for shits and giggles.
Update: Bought the 12-step, got the Animoog app on my iPad (which is super awesome). After hooking everything up, I've come to realize that my Ipad2 is too old to sync properly, and I can't get it to recognize my 12 Step. Long story short, I bought a bunch of shit and it doesn't work properly. Now I have to decide if I'm going to bring my laptop to gigs (nope), or spend a shit ton of money to either buy a dedicated Ipad for gigs (probably not), or buy some sort of MIDI instrument to connect to the 12 Step. This is a much bigger investment than I had planned. Wife will not be pleased. Would be awesome to pick up an access virus, but I don't think I'll use it enough to justify spending over 1k on a pedal.
oh absolutely. it kinda falls along the lines of playing the andy mckee / jon gomm "percussive" style of guitar, which is just a different animal altogether. Outside of playing cheese dick songs for girls or if there's a group hanging out, I don't play a whole lot of normal guitar anymore. Looping shit every once in a while when I'm extremely high on a weeknight and not playing xb1. I feel like with enough tutorials and just fucking around it would be easy to get the hang of. More than anything I'd say getting the presets / recordings setup would be the challenge. Never hooked my guitar up to my Mac before. Don't even know what programs you would use for that equipment. What's the most user friendly / best digital audio workstation app, ie - ableton, garageband, pro tools, etc
What's a good/cheap digital audio workstation for a Microsoft Surface? I've used garageband on my wife's mac but I think it's an apple product.
bought one of those strum stick type deals on a whim last week (for bike camping purposes and whatnot). RIP good relations with my neighbors...
