decided to fuck around with the SFX shit on the keyboard until I can get something that makes real beats. don't judge my walmart percussion. pretty fun building it up one riff at a time on the looping station. sent to little brother, says the song needs some white boy rap spitting and a hook. roommate took initiative on the rap... which actually wasn't bad (won't let me record him rapping on it yet). Working on a kinda singing/melody hook.

tl;dr- just a melody and beat now but will be a song once the mic and midi cords arrive and I can fuck with it on reaper

You can important most any type of audio with pro tools (I'll assume reaper will do the same) and you can mix it with what you've recorded however you want.

I was watching a reaper tutorial for a few minutes before I got confused AF and went back to just playing shit. Do I need to download an audio driver? If so, which one and how I do this.

and pardon the ignorance this is all brand new and I am not the most computer/tech savvy around... will this item here serve as the mBox?

    http://www.amazon.com/Focusrite-2i2...s&ie=UTF8&qid=1463756444&sr=1-5&keywords=mbox

does this take what I play into that box to the mac? (I think it says usb 2.0 in the picture)

and what type of cord would I get for input on the mic/piano IN and the guitar IN?
would think using this cable for guitar and piano > box would be the right one and then just standard mic cable?

also just something good to know. in this situation what are the rules:

    deadmau5 does a song
guy on youtube that takes DJ songs and does classical-ish piano compositions makes his cover of that song
I use the main bass line and a harmony riff from the youtube cover and then add to it

do I need some sort of permission from either party?

to use the main riff in the cover of the original song as well as the harmony riff over it.
sounds kinda dumb actually typing it out like I answered my own question, considering it's a cover. but the guy put out an album with the arrangements in 2013 and the song i'm taking those from is on there.

EDIT: Ignore that, I thought the amazon link was just for that USB cable. That interface should work, but one like this http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-UM2-Audio-Interface/dp/B00EK1OTZC/ref=sr_1_3?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1463761855&sr=1-3&keywords=audio interface has a mic input and a guitar input, may be easier for you.

That usb cable will work, but your interface will most likely come with one. I've never done a guitar -> mic cable, so I have no idea how they work. You'll need a driver, the manufacturer of the box will probably have one for downloading on their website.

nope DL'd the 60 day trial of Reaper 5.10 to see if I like it. so that Behringer UM2 is all I need to go between the instruments and mic >>> Mac? And then I'd go to the Behringer mfg site to get the drivers or what?

    i feel helpless :lurk:

Yeah. Instrument/mic -> interface -> usb cable -> computer. Download the drivers from the manufacturer and Reaper should recognize it.

fwiw this was is the earliest rough draft of that cover of the cover (minus the guitar fills bc i left it plugged in and the battery in the acoustic was dead). did it in a hurry on my lunch break to send to this chick I know that can sing pretty damn well. little sloppy on a couple parts of the beat.
shits dark. but the girl sounds like ellie goulding and I think that combo could be p dope :idk:

For these recording programs, you can get lost in the weeds trying to understand it all. Get to where you can record a track and play it back. Then go from there. You can't and shouldn't try to understand all they can do in a day. Just my :twocents:

Considering buying one of those books that has all the Beatles songs with guitar chords. Haven't bought any kind of tab book since I was first learning to play but seems like it'd be an awesome thing to have on your shelf

Gig this Friday, open mic on Thursday.

We're going to play "Hold the Line" by Toto, "Bridgeless" by Umphrey's McGee, and Forty Six & 2 by Tool at the open mic to make sure they're ready for Friday.

I'll try to record them again. We'll see what happens.

ole lady last night said play something that will put me to sleep. high as bajeezis just kinda fucked around a little bit to get a melody and then picked around in D on the acoustic for a while. figured I'd record for future reference.

got the last of the "studio" setup last night but busy as hell this week. supposed to rain all weekend so probably be watching reaper tutorials and figuring out what the hell I'm doing friday-saturday. pretty excited to be able to actually structure this shit instead of monotonous loops :8mm:

I have a room full of tab books. Now days there are a million on line tab sites, so you really don't need the books anymore unless you just prefer it. Do note that tab sites are up there with porn for running scripts and malware though, so you have to protect your computer if you are browsing free sites.

The problem I had with books like that was, I would learn the main riff of the song, get excited about the next song and jump from one to another. In the end I would know the first parts of every song but very few whole songs. I was much younger and had less patience then though, so maybe not a problem for you. It was great for doing medleys at parties.

Later on I just took our proposed set list and grabbed the tab to those songs. Tab was the greatest thing invented for all those club bands who were playing "Sweet Home Alabama" in A.

It is a good one. Chinese made unfortunately, but I got it within my price range and it's a full tier or two above the banjos I was originally looking at new. Won't ever have to upgrade, which is pretty awesome.

Played the gig last night, had a really good crowd.

One of my buddies made a ~5 hour drive to town with his wife and toddler, then came to the bar. He was crashing hard, so we decided to play Tool for him before he left. Damn near emptied the bar with about 45 minutes left in the set. Whoops.

On the bright side, the folks who stuck around were a really good group of folks and friends, so we got to play a bunch of ridiculous shit and get drunk with them.

Friend is moving and couldn't take it with him. Anxious to start jamming on it but first order of business is change the strings. The low E is so dead it barely even produces a recognizable tone. I think bass strings are like $40 :/

Had a good one come on pandora today that made me think ab this post. Pretty sure we're about the same age too I bet a few of us early 30s guys learned it back in the day: Pardon Me acoustic version. Sat down and relearned it a few minutes ago really fun song to play/sing

Could be a Luke warm or scorching hot take... I think the Nirvana unplugged album was better than any of their studio albums by a long shot. Used to play along with the whole thing when I got home from school in middle school.

Same for 16Stone and AIC unplugged album. Anyone else do this? Would be curious to hear some of the choices if so.

Older brother would do the same but his room had Van halen, Metallica and megadeth blaring

I know the main riff to "Pardon Me" but never sat down and learned the whole acoustic version. Dude is getting downright jazzy on the verses. Really cool song to learn though. (Hot take, I fucking hate the Incubus song "Drive". Big fan of the band but always hated that song)

When I first started playing I couldn't put on an album and play along; that ear came much later. Recently I played along to Green Day's Dookie and Insomniac albums and had fun figuring out the chords to all those two minute songs I used to love

The guitar player for incubus plays some outside the box stuff. I liked incubus and got a guitar world that had the recorded version of pardon me tabbed out. I was like "cool, I'll learn this." Then it had all these fucked up cords and changes and it was a dickload to remember so I was all "fuck this"

IMO a "decent not break the bank set up" is a multieffects processor like the ones made by Zoom or Digitech. You can get one for $200 or less that between all its combinations can make thousands of different sounds. This will be fine for most novice guitar players. If you buy individual stompboxes for each effect you're gonna have more control (and some of the effects may sound a little warmer/less processy) but each pedal is $50-100 so it costs more.

Don't get carried away with effects though; most amps come with built in distortion and that's really the only deal breaker effect that's out there. I like wah wah, chorus or delay at times but I can get by with just clean and fuzz.

distortion, wah, delay. The latter will give you chorus/flanger effects as well. what are you considering break the bank?

edit: the wah is a toy and not necessary until you really get a handle on it. pick up a glass slide too. Never too early to learn.

In that case, a used digital effects would work with a distortion pedal. $75 for the latter. The tones you can get from an old analog delay are great, but you're kind of locked in. A digital delay gives you a lot of options to play with. I haven't looked in eons at the costs, but occasionally see something. Nole0515 probably could give a good idea. for the last 7 years I've only used my amp effects (line 6 spidervalve 212). There are so many options available nowadays.

You've inspired me to look. [IMG]

Wah is so overused imo. Don't buy one. Good chorus pedal and a good distortion pedal. Ideally your amp has reverb on it
