Just bought this bad boy and these accessories for my new house. Can't fucking wait to move and start mowing.
Yea but there aint much better than sitting on the porch drinking a beer watching the sprinklers water a fresh cut lawn
They spot treat with post emergent and allegedly did the whole yard with pre emergent in march. They are getting fired. I can do it myself.
yeah I mean you're supposed to wait like 3 months minimum to plant new seed after putting down a pre emergent (depending on the product) or your grass seed will have trouble
If he had a bunch of rain he may be ok. And of course if he only seeded the areas where he put down that new dirt then it won't matter.
Even with a selective pre-emerg? And, I may have to start over with the back yard. Got 2 types of weeds.
nice looking yard 3NolesFan3 I suppose you would be fine if it's selective and allows your grass to still grow, I always just heard pre emergents just stop pretty much everything from growing
What do you mean by start over? ROund here you are way ahead of the game if thats all you have to battle
Kill everything and get sod or seed. Used roundup today. Was planning on seeding again.saturday, member that may be on hold now. Front yard is going great while the rear is awful imo.
Will be posting pic of lawn tonight, it's a beautiful thing. I do need to de-thatch very badly though...pay a company or do it myself? TIA.
Best weed and feed I've found is Lesco 18-0-9. It's mostly a golf course product that is now being sold at Home Depot. Great stuff. The weed killer component of it is amazing and cleaned up my mistake of forgetting to put out preemergent. TC most of the posters here are in the South. Growing up in the Mid Atlantic, we never did anything aside from a little fertilizer every few years. The South is a different game entirely.
Central Texas here and i highly recommend a well if you want to keep a good green lawn, its just too hot and too dry to battle if you gotta pay for that water
I'm sure a well would be prohibitively expensive here, when my sprinklers run their full program our water bill is about $250
So thats what three or four months a year? Not sure the water table there, but i know guys get in the 250 foot range here for less than a couple grand Wouldnt take long to recoup that, especially when you stop worrying about adjusting the timer to save water
Went out and looked at the new house last night. God help me. There are fucking dandelions EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This thread might be a little more appropriate than the gardening thread. Just posted this. Any advice? Update: It's growing in spots but not in others. Basically it's growing where I put additional potting soil. I'm pretty sure this winter I'm going to till it all up and put a bunch of additional topsoil. Should I spread some fertilizer now? I really don't want to burn any of the grass but it seems like the seeds just aren't getting enough nutrients. I water this shit every day. Spoiler This is my first spring in the house. The previous owner tried to sod it twice with no luck. : ( I'm worried it's just not meant to be.
They used to have self help kits you could buy at like Home Depot and places like that. Like a little science kit.
If sod has failed twice, you have a soil problem. Call the professionals. And try to get someone to come out from the extension dpt.
My dad was an extension agent. I figured that might be the issue. I'll try this. Thanks for the help.
Do you think it could be the fact that there isn't enough soil instead of bad soil? When I tilled it I was constantly hitting the roots of that big oak tree in the picture. Neither of my neighbors have issues with their grass and there's only about 100 ft. separating their yards. Apparently one of the sod attempts was using discount sod that had already turned.
Just bumping and will update with pics when I get a chance. When I moved in our place, the grass in the back was absolutely dead, composed of a sort of sad mix of weeds, sedges, etc. It's very low light, as we have 100 ft. trees all around. After renting a tiller from HD and raking out what I could of the old stuff, I had great luck with Rebels Shade Mix turf type fescue, although it does thin out a lot in July and August on account of the hot nights here in Alabama (I'm officially way too far South for fescue to do well). I established the turf in mid October. If you're around my zone (Birmingham, 7b-8a) and are heavily shaded, I'd give it a shot. The chief advantage to Rebels (which also has a sun mix) is that it's available at Home Depot and is almost 99% seed (Scotts, by comparison is maybe 50% actual grass seed by weight). Before Spoiler After Spoiler You do need to overseed every year down here, but I added in some non-shade mix Rebels this time around to see if it improved the performance of the grass that's in more filtered light area. We'll see. You can also see my fence restoration in partial progress...about $600 in Ready Seal later, it should be done.
Not that much: 20-30%? The issue is it just looks like shit...very brown, etc., but I was out of town a lot in late June, so I'm sure not watering it was an issue. Since it's so wet here in the Spring, it goes like gangbusters then, but then when the hot nights hit there are issues. I think I used two big bags to establish the turf, then this past fall used a big bag and a small bag of the non-shade to overseed.
I need to do this also. Never have. Is it applied through a pressure washer or by hand? Or pressure wash then seal? I have no idea.
this is great, this is the exact mix I plan on using in the fall. same situation with a lot of tall trees. we're right on the border of where this is supposed to grow in DFW but I plan to just overseed every year as well. testing it in my front yard this fall.
also you can rent a dethatcher for about 100$ for a day. i havent done it, but has anyone tried it? too late into the season now though, right?
This is what I did here. Just to weed out the lazy people (pardon), they make you do the soil sample first, but you can get the packet from any JeffCo/BHM library. Y'all would appreciate that it's a Barner lady (very cute) who comes out and tells you why your grass and wood is all messed up.
I rented a pressure washer from HD for the day to the tune of $90. I was going to borrow my f-i-l's but it was having issues. Didn't get it all done, so I ended up borrowing a neighbors. I'd recommend a gas one at least 2400psi along with a 25 degree or less tip. The sealer I'm using is a penetrating one, Ready Seal. More expensive up front, but you don't have to strip it every time you seal it (which you do with a conventional type) which is attractive to me. Downside is that you really need about 5 5 gallon things of it to do it and they are $150 a piece. Behr is $130, though, so whatever. I'm applying it with a regular old garden sprayer, which seems to work fine.
I forgot: Ready Seal evidently should be good for anywhere from 3-7 years on a fence vs. 2-3 for the surface-type sealants. I hope so, at least.
