no you'd be fine. I put down a preemergent in feb and am about to weed and feed this week. although I've never had huge success with weed n feeds, I always have to end up treating it with a post emergent anyways.
I broke down and got Trugreen at my new house last year. Only treating two of the three acres. The back acre was overgrowth and will end up as a go-kart track and a pond. One year of my love and care and it looks amazing already. Bought an aerator, and overseeder this spring. Still some work to do to get it where I want it, but to the novice it looks incredible
Weed n feed is only twice a year (you're fine to put it on now). Fertilizer is ok every 6-8 weeks during growth season.
Quick question, I believe I have centipede grass in the front and back. On the side of my house, I get very little sunlight and can't keep grass growing there. Any recommendations? Also I am putting down a Weed and Feed to simply get rid of it. Its the Scott shit I bought again since it was on sale at HD. I need to find a reliable product which will actually work. Any suggestions on brands to look for to encourage the Centipede grass to fill in?
Probably going ahead and putting out brown patch treatment this week. Last year I let it get going before I started treating and fought that shit all summer, gonna try and stay in front this year.
St.augustine takes shade better than centipede, looks similar, and the same products can be used on both grasses. However total shade and nothing will grow. Stay away from weed and feed. Spray a post emerge herbicide, let the weeds die, the put down fert. Don't feed the weeds and Dry herbicide is a waste of time.
I have a relatively small lawn that the previous own didn't really give a shit about "it looks good when freshly cut so it's fine." As a result I have a ton of crab grass, so I pulled a bunch of it and put down seeds about a month ago. Those areas are doing pretty well but the thought of manually pulling all of the crabgrass is pretty daunting so I'm hoping there's any easier way. I'll take pictures after work today
If you seeded a month ago the herbicide you need to kill crabgrass will kill the seedlings as well. A nice weed free lawn takes numerous growing seasons to obtain, but you gotta start somewhere.
Here's a closeup of the grass. Spoiler We just bought this house, and the previous owner took decent care of the lawn, meaning he had it treated by Scott's every year. I want to keep up and/or improve it, but not by hiring a service. The problem is that I don't know where he was at in the lawn care process, so I don't know when and with what to start. Anyone have any ideas? In walking the yard, it's pretty weed-free right now, I found maybe three total dandelions. See pics: Spoiler Any advice is welcomed and appreciated!
Hard to tell on mobile but it looks like zoysia. Are the blades fat or thin? Otherwise it looks like a heathy lawn. Find a SiteOne dealer, and take a sample, they'll now for sure and sell whatever you'll need. Pre-emerge in January and September Fert in April and June Spray and trouble spots when needed but hand pick for best results Starting with a good yard is the ripe titties so you're already ahead
Get some Ortho Max crabgrass control. Its fine to use 4-6 weeks after seeding. Mix it up and spray spots or the entire yard. Takes a week or 2 to fully work but it does kill it.
Just here to reinforce that post emerge spray is the way to go. Most of the granular stuff from the box stores is junk.
Dark green like that it's probably bluegrass, could be fescue though I doubt it. Run it by a SiteOne and they'll tell you for sure
I've been backed up and let my lawn grow and unfortunately didnt know if id get to it this weekend. So i used Mowz as a quick solution. With a 10 or 15% code (forget which) it seemed affordable enough as a one time thing. $37. Also keep in mind on the app i even said that thr lawn was higher than 4" and thus it charged me a couple extra bucks. whatever. So it's scheduled for today and i get an e-mail from them saying "they got there and it's long. We are charging $54 now. I changed it in the app and the mow is now underway." No notice to question or confirm the upcharge. They just did it and the guy wont return my e-mails. This is basically like getting Uber Surge pricing AFTER you get out of the damn car. As far as i can tell, I dont see the notice while scheduling that the price can change based on the guy showing up and wanting to charge more. Fuck them. (on the plus side the picture they sent looks nice. Edging and all).
Fuck that noise. You only agreed to the $37 price. If he wanted to go up to $54 he should have atleast waited for you to ok it. If you want $17 bucks back I don't really see where he has a leg to stand on.
sent another e-mail and got a response. I'm trying to be constructive and not angry because i do believe the app service COULD be good if they avod shit where they give the contractors free reign to change the price once they get there. That shouldnt be in their power - at all. If its too long for them, thats what they get for signing up to be an ondemand mower. In the event its like a lawn that hasnt been mowed in a year and its human height, they can refuse but if its just gotten long to a foot or so, just mow the shit. He said he's sorry and would refund back to the original fee but hasnt happened yet. According to the site the guy is their 'VP Operations'
Old: New: There wasn't a curb so we built one and now we have to take on the shrubbery. But it's definitely looking much better. Sod seems to be sticking pretty well. How long should I wait until I refertilize?
You can fertilize it now. Just water it very often. Looks good. What kind of grass is that? Do you have an idea for shrubs?
I've been watering the shit out of it and put a bunch of fertilizer/lime under it during the prep. It's St. Augustine and I think we might just get some boxwoods eventually. Thank god the siding goes almost all the way to the ground.
A couple of questions for the lawn bros ... Is it too late in the year to patch some areas with grass seed in the Midwest? I have some areas of dead grass, should I rip up the dead grass, till the ground and start over?
The Lesco weed & feed you can buy at HD is awesome. Just make sure the grass is damp and that you have a few dry days after. If it's wet and then rains after, you'll still get the fertilizer benefit, but it doesn't kill off the weeds as well.
the worst deal with lawncare is letting others come in and cut your grass for you . why ? the fucking shit they bring from other yards ?????? on the bottom of the mower, that they do not clean . that is the best way to fuck p your grass shit from other peoples yards .
I like boxwoods in the right setting, but I'd go with something that puts off color every now and then. Also something that stays short or can be kept short. Plenty of boxwoods can, but there other plants that look good and can be kept rather short that are good foundation plants as well.
I need to vent. Long story below. Spoiler I have AT&T Uverse. About a month ago, a couple days before the basketball national championship game is how I remember the date, AT&T was apparently doing some work on my street. This dumb fuck didn't know what he was doing and somehow cut all the lines to my entire street and everyone on my street with AT&T loss their service. They took about 4 days to get out and put a temporary line from the box, across my front yard, to my house to get me service. That in itself was bad enough that I didn't have tv or internet for a few days. They were supposed to come out a couple of times to bury the line in the 2 weeks that followed, I would get the text updates saying this, but no one would show. Last week I called them to see what the fuck is going on and by some miracle they are actually coming out that day. I get a call from the guys out at my house that afternoon because where the box is close to my fence and my two dogs aren't happy about them being there. I tell them no problem, I'll leave work and go let the dogs in, I wanted to talk to them anyway about what they were doing. I've talked about it here a couple times but I'm doing a huge yard renovation. Been basically in my yard for the last couple months getting it ready so that I can get my zoysia seed down. Have been waiting for the right weather window since it needs to be warm. So I talk to the guys and tell them I need them to mark where they put the line down because I'm about to be tilling my yard in the next week or so and I don't want to rip this line up and be right back in this situation. So we start looking at the temporary line and the guy basically tells me whoever put it in fucked it up big time. It's hard to explain but they basically ran it in the worst way possible and have about 300 extra feet of line wrapped together. The AT&T guy starts venting to me that AT&T will sub this work out and the contractors that get it don't give a fuck. So he's telling me the different options that we have and I tell him I don't care what he does just get it done that day cause I don't want to have to deal with getting them back out there since it was such a head ache the first time. The guys understands and I leave to go back to work. I come home that night and I see orange markings across my yard where I figured they buried it but it doesn't look like to me anything has been dug up and that temporary line is still across my yard. This was late last week. I call today to see what is going on and after being on hold/waiting for over an hour for this guy to figure things out he tells me that they will be out there in 2-3 weeks from May 5th to actually bury it, so basically some time this month. I fucking lost it. I'm leaving to go out of town for almost 3 weeks at the end of this month. My plan was to get the seed down and germinated before I leave and then I have timers to keep it watered while I'm gone. I was going to finish all this this weekend. I told the guy all this, that I can't put new seed down and then have them come drive their big ass ditch witch over it and ruin months of work, not to mention a bunch of fucking money. The guy tells me I have literally zero options, there's no way to get them out there any earlier. I ask him if there is anyway that they can at least call me before they do any work so I can at least go out there and supervise and make sure they aren't fucking anything up. No dice. So I guess my only option is that by some miracle they come out before Thursday or I'll have to wait till the end of June to put my seed down. Which sucks because I'm going to have a war on my hands with all the weeds and not to mention that this whole time frame was in place because we are having a huge party at the end of July so I wanted the yard to be looking nice and the grass to be filling in well by that time. I lit into that guy, to the point that I felt bad and apologized, basically told him I know none of that is his fault but I was pissed. I'm beyond frustrated, I have put in 100's of hours, lots of money to get this right and these fucking idiots at AT&T come and screw it all up. Google fiber is working in my area and soon as they are done AT&T can fuck off. [spoiler/]
There's nothing wrong with crab grass. It just has a bad name, that's all. Everyone would love it if it had a cute name like "Elf grass".
Jesus... I actually recently had a cable switched out through Comcast. They basically said the old one was crap and switching it was no cost to me. So the guy came out and put the temp cable across my yard. It had plenty of slack and i could mow around it easily. Within a week a contractor came just like they said and he buried it in like....10 minutes. Tops. Most of the cable they dont 'dig' at all...they just basically push it into the ground which is good since it creates minimal 'holes'. they Only had to dig on either side of my driveway to feed it under there. But yeah thats insane it takes them that long since the process of actually burying it took such little time and it was just one guy. so that said, it sucks but if its an option could you just hire your own guy to do it?
Spoiler Going off this I've been thinking about my different options and had a question hopefully you guys can help with. I'm thinking about doing my seeding in two parts, go ahead and do my back yard now and I'll do my front yard at the end of June. I need to cut sod out and was going to rent a sod cutter this weekend, really don't want to rent it twice so was thinking cut the sod out of the front yard then just leave it bare dirt till I'm ready to seed at the end of next month. My main concern is having a full on weed war. Currently there is dead grass that I killed with glyphosate (roundup) that's keeping any weeds down. Would a premergent help keep weeds from germinating? I guess I can just keep spraying with glyphosate and hand picking. Any thoughts?
I would probably just deal with having the weeds until you're ready to seed the front. I wouldn't put out a pre-emergent and I wouldn't spray anymore round up anywhere you plan on seeding unless you're planning on bringing in a couple of inches of new topsoil before you seed or something.
Why are there always birds in my lawn after I mow? It's like their picking in the ground at something. Robins and sparrows
I mow my lawn sometimes twice a week you asshole and it looks good. I'm just gonna start shooting the birds thanks guys
Don't put a pre emerge down anywhere you want your seed to grow. I'd just keep burning it up with glyphosate until you're ready to lay the seed down.
I have a bermuda front lawn and over the last couple of years, patches of this thicker grass pop up. Do i just need to kill it with grass killer and then reseed the area? Unfortuantely theres like a dozen of these.
Looks like dallisgrass. It stinks be virtually anything you use to kill it will also kill the Bermuda. 3 options 1. Dig it up and fill with sand and starter soil 2. Hire a lawn care company 3. Buy this stuff that's really expensive http://www.solutionsstores.com/msma...76_a_7cMSMA1&gclid=CK-ei9Xh3swCFQckhgod6icGIw
damn... Yea i have considered hiring a company for general applications but always felt I could just apply stuff myself. obviously hasnt worked as well as id hoped.
