Messi's brace for Barcelona in their 2-1 Primera Division win against Real Betis on Sunday took him onto 86 goals and past Gerd Muller's tally of 85 but the Zambian FA claim to have new evidence ready to present to FIFA which will show Kabwe Warriors striker Godfrey Chitalu scored 107 goals in 1972.

"Our researchers came through today with some amazing results," Erick Mwanza, the FA's spokesperson said. "They presented it this morning to the vice-president of the football association of Zambia. It's all concrete, it's recorded match by match, goal by goal."

A Zambian FA spokesperson had previously revealed plans to send the records to FIFA in an effort to correct historical records.

"Even as the world has been looking at Lionel Messi's record, breaking Gerd Müller's, the debate and discussion back here has been why Godfrey's goals are not being recognised," they said.
"We will then send [records of Chitalu's goals] to CAF [Confederation of African Football] and FIFA so that we can show that, while Messi's record is there, while Müller's record is there, the actual record holder in terms of goals per calendar year is actually an African. It's actually Godfrey Chitalu."

Chitalu, who won Zambia's player of the year award five times, scored the goals in at least four domestic competitions and the Zambian national team.

I imagine people will give just as many fucks as they did when it was Messi's record in all honesty.

Brazilian club Flamengo may challenge Lionel Messi’s calendar year record, saying that former Brazil captain Zico scored 89 goals in 1979.
Barcelona’s Messi scored his 87th and 88th goals of the year in Wednesday’s King’s Cup last-16 first leg at Cordoba having thought he had broken Gerd Mueller’s 1972 record of 85 on Sunday.
“We are upset. Messi still hasn’t passed the milestone,” Bruno Lucena, head of Flamengo’s research and statistics department, told Brazilian sports daily Lance.
Lucena calculated that Zico scored 81 goals for Flamengo in 1979, plus another seven for Brazil and one in a friendly between Argentina and a Rest of the World XI.
More on Flamengo’s Statement that Zico Scored 89 Goals in 1979 after the Jump……..

He added that Zico missed two months of the season through injury between September and November.
“If he had played for the whole year, he would have scored more than 100 goals,” he said.
Lance produced a list of goals scored by Zico in 1979. According to the statistics, he hit six goals in a game on two occasions, four goals in a game once and five hat-tricks.

Now that he's passed 89, will Brazil now say Zico scored 91?
