    Highlights from Week 11

Colorado Springs (30-35) 3rd in PCL American North

Michael Reed had a great week. He went 10 for 27, 2 runs, 2 RBI and one stolen base. Magnifico has found his form again, pitching 4 strong innings with 3 hits and 3 strikouts.

Arcia had another slow weeking hitting 4 for 23 scoring 5 runs and striking out 8 times.

Biloxi Shuckers (39-30) 2nd in Southern League South

Biloxi just missed out on being first half champions of the Southern League South. Brett Phillips hit well this week going 9 for 25, 2 runs, 2 doubles, 1 HR, and 3 RBI.

Nottingham with a down week only recording 4 hits in 18 at bats.

Brevard County Manatees (23-42) 6th in FSL North

The Manatees only played four times this week as they went into the halfway break. Madeiros has made his way back from the DL and had a nice outing - 5 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, and 4 strikeouts.

Coulter had an awful week getting only one hit in 10 at bats.

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (34-36) 4th in Midwest League West

Diplan pitched twice this week with a total of 8 IP, 10 hits, 3 ER, 1 BB, and 12 strikeouts. Jake Gatewood put up his first week with zero errors at 3B! Freddy Peralta pitched his best game of the year with 6 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 1 BB, and 6 strikeouts.

Trent Clark hit only 4 for 20 this week with one triple, 3 RBI, and 8 strikeouts.

Helena Brewers (3-0) 1st in Pioneer League North

Helena kicked off their season on Friday, giving Gilbert Lara and Demi Orimoloye their minor league debuts. Lara had a nice series going 4 for 11, 3 runs scored with 2 errors.

Orimoloye had a slow start to his campaign - 2 for 12 with 3 runs scored.

Orlando Arcia, ss, Brewers. Scouts say Arcia has enough pop to be dangerous at the top of the lineup and he showed that in a doubleheader Wednesday, homering in both games as Triple-A Colorado Springs split two with Memphis (Cardinals). Arcia now has six homers as well as five triples and nine doubles, showing good extra-base power. Arcia has been seeing some time at second base, which general manager David Stearns says is about development, not about a position shift, despite how well Jonathan Villar has played in the majors this season.

Funny that Arcia hit two HRs last night because I was going to say how disappointing his season has been with the lack of extra base hits playing his home games in Colorado.

Hader had his first bad start of the season last night. Big mistake letting him pitch in Colorado Springs. He should have just stayed in AA till he is ready to pitch for the Brewers.

Heyman penned an article of the trades he wanted to happen and his Lucroy deal was straight up for Gallo.

Yeah, didn't get a hit until the 9th. The pitcher from Montgomery was pulled after the 6th because his hand was hit by a hard grounder. So, it would have been a combined no-hiter.

Gallo is too hit or miss for us to take him straight up for Lucroy. He may hit 40 HRs per year but he may also hit .220. I would prefer a deal like the Gomez one where we got several highly rated guys.

Heyman also proposed a garbage deal for Braun to the Giants. Sorry but Braun is going nowhere especially in these deals where the Brewers pay part of his contract and get B level prospects in return. He also suggested we could trade Braun and use the money to resign Lucroy; the media doesnt seem to understand that we dont need to move salary and I have no interest in signing a catcher that is over 30 to a long term deal.

Lucroy has been far and away the best catcher in baseball this year. Some team has to be desperate enough to give us what we want.

I cant believe I wanted to give him a long term contract. Unless he turns it around dramatically he will probably be non tendered this offseason.

  16. tradercane

    tradercane Well-Known Member

May as well keep him as a starter and hope he turns it around because he will have no value as a reliever. While on the subject of relievers we can probably move one or even two of our relievers to some desperate team this trading deadline especially if the Yankees decide that they are contenders lol and don't move any of their guys.

Isn't the list of guys that fail as starters but turn into decent relievers pretty long? Especially with that velocity? I'm not saying he is going to be Wade Davis or Andrew Miller, but maybe he can get back up to 97-98 consistently if he's not starting.

  18. tradercane

    tradercane Well-Known Member

Wily doesn't strike out enough hitters to ever be a dominant reliever. I don't think it matters what they do with him at this point he just isn't any good. Since starters have more value than relievers I would just give him the rest of the season to figure things out and just let him go next offseason if things don't turn around.

The Brewers should not send any good prospect pitchers to Colorado Springs. This is all the result of Doug Melvin hiring an incompetent scouting director where our AAA teams in Nashville were terrible year after year resulting in them not wanting the Brewers as an affiliate. Stearns better get a new AAA affiliate and I hope it happens after this season.

On another note our high A team is moving from Brevard County to Kissimmee but that ownership group will probably be dumping us considering we haven't had a competitive team there in years. We will probably be stuck putting a team in the California League which is another league notorious for hurting pitchers. Having the right minor league affiliates is very important and just one other area where Doug Melvin screwed us over.

Has there been any talk of a possible new AAA affiliate?

On top of getting the minor league system sorted out I would love for them to move to the Grapefruit league. Half of Milwaukee winters in Naples so I bet they would draw well there.

I haven't heard any talk of a new AAA affiliate but I am sure that they don't want to remain in Colorado Springs. I would also like to see them have spring training in Florida and there have been rumors of it because the team is not happy with their complex in Arizona but since Attanasio lives in LA they will probably stay in Arizona.

    Highlights from Week 12

    Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Yadiel had a nice week going 5 for 14 with 3 runs and 5 RBI. Reed had another solid week. He hit 10 for 31 with 7 runs, 2 doubles, 1 HR and 8 RBI. Magnifico picked up two saves this week while pitching 3.2 scoreless innings.

Arcia had another slow week at the plate, going 6 for 30. However, he made the best of it by hitting 1 double, 1 triple, and 2 homers while batting in 7 runs. Jorge Lopez pitched his worst start of the season, raising his ERA above 6. Hader also pitched his worst of the season, giving up 6 ER in only 3 innings, we'll see how he battles back next time.

    Biloxi Shuckers

Only four games for the Shuckers this past week. Nobody stood out among the top prospects and Roache continues to rest on the DL.

Phillips only hit 3 for 15, but made the most of it by scoring 3 times and hitting 1 double, 1 HR, and 5 RBI.

    Brevard County Manatees

Nothing much positive to say among our Florida League team, either.

Medeiros raised his ERA above 6 after a rough 4 inning start. Ponce has gone over the 6 ERA (though with much fewer innings) as well after his worst start of the season.

    Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

All around a VERY good week for our Timber Rattler prospects.

Trent Clark hit decently, going 4 for 13 with a double, 1 HR, and 3 RBI. Devin Williams had a QS with 6 IP, 4 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB, and 6 K's. Isan Diaz had an incredible week at the plate, hitting .500 in 14 at bats. He scored 6 times, hit 2 doubles, 2 HR, and 3 RBI. Diplan is now under a 2.00 ERA on the year. Jake Gatewood hit 5 for 15 including a double and a HR. He committed two errors (1 fielding, 1 throwing).

    Helena Brewers

    Demi had a better 2nd week, hitting 6 for 23, 4 runs, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 HR, and 2 RBI.

Gilbert Lara struggled to get it going this week, only recording 2 hits in 24 at bats. He struck out 9 times.

Do you know anything about this 11th round pick? He wanted at least $1.2m or he is going to go to Arizona State. Brewers have $640k left in draft money but the first $100k doesn't count for him and they could get to $1.2 by paying a tax w/o giving up any future picks.

    http://m.brewers.mlb.com/news/article/187011058/brewers-gm-david-stearns-on-chad-mcclanahan

Edit: I say f'it. Bring him in. Power bat that will likely end up at first base down the road.

So we signed this guy. Top 100'ish player in the draft that profiles as a CI power bat. Definitely fills a void w/in the organization. They've been picking up a bunch of toolsy players which is nice but still need power.

We better do some good work at the deadline. Stearns needs to make a good deal for Lucroy. The jury is still out on this guy especially with him meddling and picking Ray at 5 instead of letting Montgomery make the pick.

From what I have seen he wasn't rated as high as the $ he was demanding. $1.2 slots in between the 52nd and 53rd pick so once that passes teams knowing his demands ignored him. Makes sense for the Brewers because it only cost them about $500k in taxes.

I like that the team spent over its allotment by the 5% maximum allowed without forfeiting a draft pick. One of the biggest criticisms I have had with the organization over the years is the lack of spending in the amateur market. Still not thrilled with the international spending this period but maybe that will change next year since Stearns just got on the job and relationships with the players are pretty much established at least a year or two before they sign.

I'm not familiar but with what just happened in Boston it sounds like the Latin America amateur free agency is rather shady. Stearns needs to get in there and get his hands dirty. They signed a decent quantity of guys so maybe that will pay off with the handlers of these players in the future.

I remember Carlos Rodon wanting 1.5 million to sign and we wouldn't pay it when we were paying Yuni the same amount to be the worst shortstop in baseball. We cant compete in free agency so we have to do great in the draft and internationally.

The Brewers signed shortstop Antonio Pinero one of the guys that the Red Sox had previously signed before getting penalized. He is 6'1 and a whopping 155 pounds. From what I read he is good defensively so I guess its a decent signing.

I still want to sign some of the top guys. Signing the 29th and 30th ranked guys just isn't good enough for me. I wouldn't let one player doing poorly change the philosophy of getting highly ranked guys. Diplan the main piece from the Gallardo trade was highly regarded and signed with Texas for 1.5 million and he is either our best or second best pitching prospect. We just have to hope that our scouts do a better job than they did under Melvin.

The pitcher is rather intriguing, but still they have turned Segura into some organizational depth which is better than they were getting for him. Dave Cameron had two questions asked of him on Segura in his chat on 7/6:

Jean Genie: Why doesn’t Segura get any respect when discussing top young MI?

    12:34
Dave Cameron: Because he’s not that good?

Pooneod: At what point is segura good in your estimation? You don’t like him – we get it.

    12:59
Dave Cameron: He has 2300 career plate appearances and a wRC+ of 83. He’s been worth ~+1.5 WAR per season. He’s not good.

But I do not like what he said about Lucroy:

Kevin: That Red Sox article stirred up lots of comments about what a Lucroy trade package would look like. What does his value look like? Is he worth a top 25 prospect?

    12:15
Dave Cameron: No, it’s still just 1.5 years of control, and elite prospects are too valuable to move for that kind of short-term upgrade. I’d guess you’d be looking at Devers and some throw-ins would be the best MIL could do.

I guess I dont understand that because Rafael Devers is ranked #14 on MLB.com
