To have the 5th pick in the draft and possibly come out of it with Corey fucking Ray makes me very upset. Pretty much every other player being mentioned with us doesn't make me much happier. Collins the catcher from Miami is a first baseman at the next level and he struck out a ton against college pitching. He sounds so much like Matt LaPorta. Nick Senzel the third baseman from Tennessee has no power so no thanks to him either.
So here is my prediction for the first five picks: Phillies: Moniak Reds: Puk Braves: Lewis Rockies: Pint Brewers: Blake Rutherford HS OF from California. I wouldn't hate the pick but I would hate passing on Groome or Pint if either or both are on the board.
I truly believe in Ray Montgomery so I probably shouldn't be this negative. His first draft with us last year was absolutely outstanding so hopefully he continues his good work the next few days. I just hope that Stearns lets Montgomery do his job and that they go with the players with high ceilings. The organization has tons of depth right now but needs to add more prospects with star potential. I think Pint will be off the board but Groome should be there so we really should ignore these nonsense attitude questions that he seems to have. The kid is 17 and has the best arm in the draft so lets take a chance and pick the guy.
This pick would anger me as much as the Jungmann and Bradley selections. We need the Reds to bail us out and pick this fucking scrub.
That is a fair point but how many LF prospects do we need with no power. This pick would just be awful in my opinion especially if Groome or Pint is still on the board. I just cant get behind picking this guy when there will be a stud pitcher on the board.
Ben Sheets and Ted Higuera are the only two legitimate aces this team has ever developed. We cant possibly justify passing on Groome or Pint for a 5'11" LF with no power.
Just saw this (it's a week old on mlbtraderumors) The Brewers’ top baseball decision-maker, GM David Stearns, has paid visits to watch high-school pitchers Jason Groome and Riley Pint as well as University of Miami catcher Zack Collins, Eric Longenhagen of Fangraphs reports on Twitter. Longenhagen also adds (Twitter link) thatRockies GM Jeff Bridich recently took a long look at Groome, who was previously favored to go first overall but has slipped in recent mock drafts.
Rutherford is not who I want but if it means no Ray or Senzel I will accept it. The strength of this organization is outfielders so picking one at all with the 5th pick is foolish bit Rutherford has more upside than Ray. I wouldn't even be against Perez even with the failed drug test since you can never have too many good young shortstops.
Pretty much every mock draft has the Brewers picking Ray. I was really excited to have a pick this high and a scouting director that I really respected but something just isn't right with this franchise. Seems like it doesn't matter who is pulling the strings we will always find a way to screw things up.
Dont get angry over Mock Drafts. If you paid attention to mocks the Jets wouldn't own the object of your desires Christian Hackenberg.
Actually it was well known that the Jets were enamored with Hackenberg and why I knew they would pick him in the second round. Really I don't care about the Jets all that much. The Brewers on the other hand are far and away my favorite team and why it hurts so much if they pick someone that I hate as much as I hate this guy.
I wouldn't like this pick if it was 15th or 25th but at 5 it bothers me so much. With the way we are overachieving this year we may not even pick in the top 10 next year so this may be our only shot at a really high ceiling pitcher for awhile. Derek Johnson has been incredible getting what he has gotten out of the likes of Davies and Anderson but it would be nice to actually have some pitchers with velocity and strikeout stuff on this staff.
Josh Hader was moved up to AAA so they can ruin him at Colorado Springs. This organization must find a way to get a new AAA affiliate and it needs to happen for the 2017 season.
Just read a rumor that Blake Rutherford has a deal with the Brewers to be the 5th pick. I would be relieved if its not Ray but I still don't like picking an outfielder with this pick. Rutherford tweeted something about Milwaukee a few days ago and deleted it which definitely could be a sign that he is the guy.
Not a guy I would pick at 5 and here is why. The guy strikes out way too much against the weak competition that he faces in that conference. The guy has tremendous power and if all things click he can be a star but he reminds me a lot of Victor Roache who the Brewers picked a few years ago with a late first round pick and that guy has been a complete bust.
The only way I see them having a deal in place is if they are going the route of signing 1.5 well below slot and using that $ later. Normally I like that strategy but I'd rather not f around at #5 and get the best player there possible. Also if they think that they think much more highly of him than the rest of the scouting community.
He is actually a top 10 or so talent so its really not that much of a reach. I don't like the strategy of going under slot with the 5th pick because the Phillies, Reds, and Braves all have more picks and more money than we do and will probably all be targeting the same hard to sign guys that we would. Just go with the best guy in Groome or Pint and go from there.
Rutherford would be much less of a reach than Medeiros was a few years ago and Medeiros didn't even sign for less than slot value. I am still heavily on the prep pitcher bandwagon but Rutherford is a much better pick in my opinion than Ray.
Just off the top of my head here is a list of Brewers OF prospects: Brett Phillips AA Biloxi: CF of the future. Needs to cut down on the strikeouts and take more walks like he did before this season but he has hit for power is a good defensive CF and has a great throwing arm. Trent Clark low A Wisconsin: Possibly the best pure hitter in the system. Great patience at the plate and has the potential for 15-20 HRs as he matures. Decent defensively but a weak throwing arm limits him to LF. Demi Orimiloye: Rookie Ball: this is a very exciting prospect. Definite boom or bust type but did tear it up last year in rookie ball and has big time power potential. Probably a right fielder. Monte Harrison: low A Wisconsin: great athlete who can probably handle CF. Has had a terrible season so far but is really young so there is time for him to develop. Clint Coulter: high A Brevard County: former first round pick with big power is struggling again and is starting to look like a bust. He has a great arm and can play RF but the bat is just not developing. Victor Roache: AA Biloxi: another former first round pick the same year as Coulter. Huge power but nothing else. Pure LF with no arm and flat out cant hit. Doubt he ever makes it to Milwaukee as a Brewer. Michael Reed: AAA Colorado Springs: big disappointment for me this season. Reed is a decent enough athlete to be at least adequate in CF and he walks a ton but he just hasn't hit this season. I thought he was a solid sleeper and potential CF at least until Phillips is ready but he may be no more than a 4th outfielder. Tyrone Taylor: AA Biloxi: former second round pick and good athlete he showed a lot of promise his first few years but has regressed and now looks to be a 4th or 5th outfielder. I am sure I am missing a few guys but this list shows we have quite a few good outfield prospects and why I am against picking one in the first round.
I think Ben Sheets is representing the Brewers at the draft tonight so that's exciting. Would be nice for our former ace to announce our future ace.
There is a good chance that both Groome and Pint will be available and it would be a shock if at least one of them wasn't there when we pick. This is our chance to draft a potential ace. Come on Montgomery lets do this.
Just read a rumor of AJ Puk to the Brewers. I want a pitcher but not this guy. He has bust written all over him.
Fellow Brewers fans talk me off the ledge. I am sorry but there is just no justification for this pick. Harold Reynolds compared Ray to Oddibe McDowell. Groome, Rutherford and so many other potential good picks on the board and we pick a guy that I predict never makes it out of AA.
This is the most upset I have been about the Brewers draft since the Jungmann and Bradley debacle. I have usually hated the Brewers first round picks but they weren't picking this high. I was so excited about a top 5 pick and they do this to us.
I don't but we'll see. I was in agreement that I wanted pitching but some people like this guy so whatever.
I was wrong about Clark and I hope to be wrong again but draft night wouldn't be the same without me going crazy would it.
Besides the Clark pick last year pretty much every year the final mock drafts correctly select the Brewers pick.
Not a fan of the new thread title. I think we need to go back to the Doogie one or maybe something involving Lucroy and his inevitable exit.
Yeah its not considered to be a good draft at all but high school pitching was the strength and we passed on most of the top high school arms specifically Groome who I would have taken first overall. Supposedly the next draft is really loaded but we may not be picking all that high.
I would like Nolan Jones a high school third baseman with our second round pick or a high upside high school pitcher.
I am losing my faith in Montgomery and Stearns. Actually I blame Stearns more than Montgomery since Montgomery has always been a high ceiling guy and we are going with all low ceiling college guys. Once again the Brewers ignoring pitching early on.
Looks like the Stearns philosophy is low ceiling guys who are relatively close to the majors over the higher upside high school kids. This organization sucks.
