I am a masochistic Laker fan and have been watching the horrible summer league games but Zach Auguste has looked pretty good in them. He is the Lakers first option off the bench and has been making some plays. Might have a shot at making the roster.

from IrishEyes Spoiler Talked this afternoon with someone close to Foster Sarell, the five-star offensive tackle. I'm told the Notre Dame visit for Irish Invasion made things more difficult for Sarell because it went so well. The family and Sarell in particular really liked Harry Hiestand, plus the current group of offensive linemen made a very positive impression. Sarell sees Hiestand as a father-type figure and that's resonated. Right now it sounds like Sarell will be back for the Stanford game in mid-October. I'd call it a Notre Dame-Stanford battle right now with Washington more of a third place team. One of the biggest factors working against Notre Dame is the distance -- a four-hour flight to Chicago then drive to South Bend. Pretty sure this guy will end up in the top 5 on all sites after he won OL MVP at the Opening (except Rivals who wasn't allowed to be there)
It's hilarious how the sites favor players because of their rankings Marvin Wilson (ranked 5* from all sites and #1 overall by some) made the top 5 DL at the Opening even though EVERYONE who has watched has said he's been getting beat left and right. Similar reports came out of the RIVALS all star camp as well a few weeks ago. They actually have pads on here so I take this a little more seriously. Wilson also won DL MVP at the Opening apparently which is just ridiculous.
Opening DL recap from ISD Spoiler The Opening Review: ND D-Line Targets Author: Jamie Uyeyama July 11, 2016 4 star DE Josh Paschal I kind of felt bad for the defensive linemen who were at The Opening this year. It wasn’t just that there were going against a very good group of offensive linemen across the board. It’s that no matter what they did they weren’t going to live up to how great the defensive line was last year. I’m not sure if any other group in the near future can match the high end talent they had at defensive tackle in 2015. This year’s group at defensive tackle had talent, but there wasn’t one player that was dominant. The same could be said for the defensive end group. No one put on a show putting together several wins back to back versus the offensive line. They lost both or split reps with offensive linemen almost all of the time. But even though that was the case, the edge rushers this year flashed in a big way and many of them that had brilliant flashes are Notre Dame recruiting targets. Right now they are all just getting started with their journeys learning to become effective pass rushers against good competition. Many of them are going to be very dangerous players off the edge at the college level and potentially for the Irish. – Defensive end Josh Paschal really moved up in my eyes after what I saw from him at The Opening. I know he showed explosiveness on film at times, but he showed some devastating power bull rushing on several occasions. I think he got just about every offensive tackle he faced on skates back in to the quarterback in one on ones. He has that one really good move and the next step is to develop counters off of that when tackles simply try to sit and anchor on him all the time. Keith Gilmore is someone that knows how to teach those kind of things and I’d love to see what he can do with Paschal. I think he’s probably a Big End for the Irish in their scheme, but since Jay Hayes moved over to rush, it’s kind of opened the door to more possibilities for bigger players at that spots. I certainly could see him bully a lot of tight ends from a seven tech if he comes off the ball like he did bull rushing at this camp. – K’Lavon Chaisson was the lightest defensive end at the camp and he looked it. A couple of the receivers were bigger than him. I don’t think the receivers could do some of the things he did as a pass rusher, thought. He has some special athletic traits that were put on full display with some reps. He didn’t come close to winning all of his reps, but his repertoire of pass rush moves that he is capable of pulling off is only matched by 5 star Jaelan Phillips and 5 star Chase Young. He had an absolutely filthy spin move on day two and beat the top offensive lineman at the camp, ND target Foster Sarell, with a great move off the edge where he knocked Sarell’s hand away and bent to the quarterback. I mentioned that he had some bad losses on day two and he did on day three as well. I can live with those losses, though, because that is really what it’s all about. This is practice and a chance to work with great coaches that can help them advance with their technique. There really was not better time to try different things than at The Opening. He won with a quick arm over move to the inside and also a mind-blowing dip (at least to me) to the outside for a win. He has natural ability that could make him a terrific nickel rusher. If he is to become more than that at the next level, he is going to have to put in quite a bit of time in the weight room to get to a weight where he can consistently hold up against the run. We didn’t get official weights on the kids before the camp was completed, but he is very thin. – Since I already mentioned him, I might as well talk about Chase Young. Notre Dame is technically still in it for him, but I would say it is a long shot at best with no visit to this point. He did show he has fantastic traits as an edge rusher with ridiculous lateral quickness, the ability to bend around the corner, and even started use his arm length to establish a violent stab move that had Jedrick Wills back on his heels and into the quarterback on one rep. He was longer than I thought he was going to be and every bit as athletic as I expected. The issue with him like just about everyone else was consistency. One great rep and then one not so great rep. Rinse and repeat. – The last day saw a couple of minor injuries that held players out and Hunter Echols was unfortunately one of them. He had been fighting through a groin injury the previous two days. Despite that injury, he won with his athleticism on day two with great feet. He had a couple of offensive linemen going one way and he worked back inside or out so quickly to win those reps. That is just something that can’t be taught. Either someone has it or they don’t and Echols has that as evidenced by a an awesome spin move he put on display on one rep. Echols also did confirm the things I thought he needs to work on based on his film, though. He isn’t strong and needs to get a lot stronger and more violent with his hands. He also was one of the few players who didn’t establish that one go-to move. It might end up being that spin move or something else. Once he has it he has a chance to be a very tough player to block because of how his athleticism allows him to counter. – Whether Josh Kaindoh takes a visit or not to Notre Dame this fall, we don’t know quite yet. We do know that Autry Denson is still in touch with him and obviously would love for that visit to happen. Kaindoh did not make the Final 5 defensive linemen and I think that was the correct call. He learned to use his length really well by stabbing and controlling offensive tackles, but he was another one trick pony for the most part. I can’t say that that one trick of converting speed to power combined with those long arms isn’t phenomenal to watch, though. There was too much dancing and head fakes rather than attacking on several reps. When he was decisive, like he was on a quick inside move where he knocked the hands away and ripped inside of Foster Sarell, he was great. It was hesitation that had him lose more times than he probably should have. After this camp, I still maintain he is a 4 star recruit who could be 5 star quality in college. He is just a bit raw and it likely won’t happen for him from day one. – 2018 defensive end Xavier Thomas does not have a Notre Dame offer. That needs to change yesterday. His final day wasn’t nearly as impressive as his second day, but I still wouldn’t have been shocked to see him take one of the defensive end spots in the Final 5. He showed explosive ability and was another prospect who kept trying different moves in order to get better. He is from South Carolina, but he has already taken an unofficial to Ohio State back in the spring. In other words, the Irish are behind and will have to try and catch up. We’ll see if he fits the other criteria, but he checks the boxes as a top edge rusher and I think everyone knows that the Irish could use one of those.
Yeah groupme is probably the best way, team board is dead af. Unless you want to argue about tipping at corbys
The suspense is killing me. Is this the nugget you are referring to? Spoiler IHHH really doesn't tip for beers - Loy
to get back to the bar tip talk. If I am at some place that I am running up a tab, I obviously tip at the end and I go 20% of the tab. If I am going to a cubs game for example and I am at some place where you cannot run up a tab and they have waitresses running around and you are paying by the round, it depends on how long we are going to be there. If we are there for a drink before the game then I go a buck a drink. If we get there early and we are staying for a bit, I will tip the waitress $20 on the first round and tell her to not forget about us and future tips depend on her. If we get good service each round a buck a drink and another $20 at the end, if she goes MIA and we have to fend for ourselves going up to the bar then nothing.
Alright I'm on groupme and posted my juicy gossip. It really isn't anything important but I like to feel like an insider sometimes.

look at that, Jake Brown finally got off his lazy bum and posted something useful - opening recap notes Spoiler Back in South Bend after a 10-day trek to the great state of Oregon. Let me start by saying this: If you ever have a chance to vacation, even if it's just for a few days, on the Oregon coast, just do it. Arch Cape is one of my favorite places and I'm fortunate enough to be able to venture there yearly. Naturally, it's hard to spend the 4th of July holiday there then pull myself away for a few days of screaming parents and supercharged amounts of testosterone at The Opening Finals. But I digress. Wanted to share some of my thoughts, Notre Dame-related and otherwise, from the biggest prospect event of the summer. Let's start with the quarterbacks. Didn't spend a ton of time watching the skill positions, but here's how I'd rank my top five: 1.) Tua Tagovailoa 2.) Davis Mills 3.) Jake Fromm 4.) Dylan McCaffrey 5.) Tommy DeVito In terms of college upside, I'd roll with Davis Mills. Tagovailoa had a fantastic week and especially turned it up on the weekend in leading his team to the 7-on-7 title. Plus, he's left handed and I like lefties because I am one. Syracuse got itself a very good one in DeVito. I'm stock down on Tate Martell. He's short (and I'm usually lenient on height with quarterbacks) and struggled with his decision-making, which led to some turnovers. Didn't think he had a very good week. Some skill guys I liked a lot: Joseph Lewis, Tyjon Lindsey, Jalen Hall, Najee Harris (wow, he's huge), Tee Higgins and Colby Parkinson. Have to say, Parkinson made a bunch of catches and really caught my attention more than once. Lewis and Hall both lived up to their five-star billing, IMO. Hard to believe they're on the same high school team. That quarterback is awful lucky. Also liked what I saw from Iowa City WR Oliver Martin, who I literally knew nothing about coming into the event. Nice player. Four-star athlete Jamyest Williams is one of my favorite players in the Class of 2017. Pound for pound, one of the best athletes and fiercest competitors around. Always around the ball. Thought USC safety commitment Bubba Bolden had a great 7-on tournament. Mostly because I saw him make three picks. Also thought Salvon Ahmed had a strong week playing defense. I like his explosiveness even better on offense, as does Notre Dame. His recruitment will be interesting. Notre Dame is the only program outside the Pac 12 in his top five (Washington, Stanford, USC, Oregon also in with the Washington native). But I feel like Ahmed is a kid that'll really "get" Notre Dame once he sees it for himself. Alright, let's dig into the big guys a little bit since I spent most of my weekend watching them. Stock up on the offensive line: Pretty much everybody. I thought the entire unit handled the defensive line throughout most of the event. Foster Sarell was the best of them. Kid is a dancing bear. All sorts of size and amazing feet/technical ability. Just a naturally gifted offensive lineman. Thought Robert Hainsey was good (as we've covered). Also liked Nick Brahms, Trey Smith (mostly), Wyatt Davis and Jamaree Salyer (2018). Smith is an aggressive offensive lineman, which sometimes gets used against him. He learned that lesson Sunday. Lunged too much. Salyer to me was very impressive for an underclassman. He's already a top guy for Notre Dame in the Class of 2018 and it's easy to see why. Very talented and physical. My top defensive lineman was Jaelen Phillips, the UCLA commit. How on earth Marvin Wilson got named MVP, I'll never understand. He most definitely lost more reps than he won and, frankly, I didn't like his attitude. He'd get beat two reps in a row, win one then celebrate like he'd won the Super Bowl. At one point Wyatt Davis beat Wilson soundly four times in a row. And then when Wilson did lose, he'd get into extra curricular stuff. I was really down on him in general. Talented, yes. Other things left a lot to be desired from my perspective. Thought Marlon Tuipulotu, Xavier Thomas and K'Lavon Chaisson had solid weeks. But overall, it was all about the offensive line. In terms of Notre Dame, and this gets said a lot when commitments get added, but I really think the Irish got better with their two commitments. C.J. Holmes is a nice athlete with versatility. I think he'll need to continue improving as a pass catcher. We were witness to multiple drops, including a big one still burned into my memory during 7-on. But it's nothing that can't continue to be coached up. Hainsey is a brawler that takes no sh*t. Gotta love that in an offensive lineman. I'd refer you to consecutive reps where Hainsey stoned Malik Herring, who after the second wanted to get into a little post-whistle dust up. Hainsey stood his ground and wrestled Herring to the ground as necessary. Overall, I think big events are a great litmus test for recruiting. Are elite kids really thinking about Notre Dame? Our answer after this week was a resounding yes, even if ND didn't add commitments. We'll see if it results in an elite class... Anyway, I'm about out of gas after spending too much time in airports today.
Foster Sarell is the new #1 overall recruit. Seems like one of those recruiting battles we always finish 2nd in.
https://www.profootballfocus.com/college-football-top-10-offensive-lines-in-notre-dame-stanford/ Pro Football Focus predicts we will have the best OL in the country this year.
If I remember the knock on HH coming in was his dislike of recruiting and scheme, now we have the best line in the country mostly because of those things. Scenery and all.
Jaelan Philips Dad on a Q&A with 247 at the opening (he's a 5 star DE)...it's a shame cuz this kid is gonna be really good Q: Was there ever a school not on the West Coast you ever felt he was intrigued in? Phillips: “Certainly Notre Dame he was intrigued. From the beginning his preference was to stay on the West Coast closer to home. Michigan also has very good academics. A lot of kids are pretty interested in Michigan these days. But Notre Dame would’ve been the one he was most interested in outside the region.”
I heard an interesting note in an II podcast recently about the quarterback situation. Sampson said that in an interview he did with Kelly, Kelly mentioned that there would not be a two-quarterback system. The point was that the system would be the system, and whichever quarterback ran it the best would be the starter without special packages for each guy. Keeping one quarterback healthy and performing all year is a rare blessing, but that comment doesn't sound good for Zaire's chances at contributing. I can't help thinking they work him in in the red zone at some point-- especially if things bog down as they have recently.
Honestly, Kizer played magnificently last year for a first year starter. I understand that sucks for Zaire, but if Kizer was the starter from day 1, people would be hyping him through the moon right now. He had his troubles (especially vs. the pass rush), but honestly he was the best 1st year starter weve had in quite awhile. Kid should end up being fantastic.
Absolutely. Basically that injury put Zaire further behind a guy who wasn't that far behind him to start with. Unless he's been doing zero this offseason, Kizer is going to take a big step forward this year.
Saying Kizer wasn't that far behind Zaire to start last season seems like some revisionist history at work.
Should have said that it turned out that he wasn't that far behind him, not that he looked close to beating him out before the season.
It isn't revisionist history. It is an indictment of our biases and assumptions. I.e., he obviously wasn't far behind Zaire but we all thought he was because we're all assholes with opinions.
4 star DT that wanted to go to Ohio State but was told no room at the inn so ND stumbled into him He's a nice player
Just another example of how filthy OSU's class is. Haven't seen where he ranks but is considered by some to be the most talented DT/NT to sign with us since Louis Nix. In retrospect the Interior class of Jones and Day is tough to beat, but I am extremely high on Hinish as well so I would put these two up against any interior class of ours that I can remember in the last decade+.
