Any data scientists? Currently a data developer and trying to learn enough to be a DS I get bored easily and want something more challenging Plus one of the few roles that you can make a lot of money but not be in a leadership/manager role
Talked to my old director at the gym on Saturday. He's got me a gig up in North Dakota doing what I did before when I was in the field. The pay would be over twice what I was making at this last job, but going back out in the road and not coming home every night kind of sucks, but on the other hand as soon as he said it I got that twinge of excitement I used to get for a new site. It's like an adventure. If I go I'm going full out pipeliner and getting an F-250 diesel, drag up tank, and a travel trailer. Woo
Not sure how to feel about it, but I just got off a team call where everyone agreed, "We're never really busy."
Oh man that is rich. Arkansas education netted you a shitty paying job in North Dakota AND you have to travel. Lmbo That absolutely made my day.
What's even better is I just got an offer back with the company I was just laid off from as a "fuck you" to corporate. Think I may take it just for the Jimmie rustling. There's been a huge power struggle between operations and the corporate side and apparently I was never supposed to get let go but corporate did it as a fuck you to operations since I was on the fence between the two, so operations is wanting to bring me back as a project manager. Lol, it's been 3 business days. I also still live in the Galleria/River Oaks area and you are in Corpus so there always that. Love ya tops. Xoxoxo
I just started last week. My manager told me he doesn't want my position to be busy because he wants us to be as flexible as possible. I don't have any planning or releases this week, so it probably shouldn't be as busy. I'm interested to see how busy it is on release or planning weeks.
That's the town I'd be going to if I take that job. It's a good gig and depending on what the final offer is I may be headed that way. I have been thinking of getting out of O&G, but I'm thinking I may want to ride this out until the bubble bursts again. I always have a fall back home but I'm pretty deep into this industry now so I may just ride it out. Just talked to the guy at my old company and this would be a weird deal. I'd still get my severance package because I'm not at corporate anymore and I'd get a company truck, but I'd be just kind of doing nothing for now. Basically they'd be bringing me back so if/when work pops up again they'd have me. I think I may take it for time being just cause but still put out some feelers to other contacts and if the ND job pays what I think it might (gf job included) I may have to bounce up there. That whole area is ripe for the picking
Final interview with regional president tomorrow. Internal transfer. Flying my wife and I both down and scheduled a real estate tour, so hopefully that's a good sign
A company truck!!!!?!?!?! Imagine all the places you can go and see in North Dakota with that truck like the oil fields, the great American Plains and Mount Rushmore
Well according to estimates there is up to 600 billion barrels of oil still there with about 15-20% being recoverable with current methods.
Company truck would be for my old job here in Houston. That I walk to. I said I'd buy a truck if I took that ND job. K
Good friend of mine runs the Parks and Rec in Williston and runs that huge Rec Center. I am not in the Oil and Gas Business but everyone benefits when things are jumping. Ag and Oil are what drives the North Dakota economy. I work for a company that is an apparel and promotional products marketing company so when the companies in the oil field are booming it definitely boosts our business as well in everything from polos, dress shirts, and pullovers to protective clothing. It wasn't a coincidence that our 2 biggest years were in 2013 and 2014 when things were booming in western North Dakota. Tons of opportunity for people that are entrepreneurial and/or don't mind working a job where you have to shower after an honest hard days work. It ain't for everybody and Williston certainly isn't a tourist destination.
Oh no, I wouldn't ever be actually doing any manual labor outside of using a laptop or my cell phone. I'd be in an office on the phone/computer all day. Only time I'd ever be outside of the office would be just to drive around and check on stuff just to see how things are coming along.
Art is huge in North Dakota....not so much culturally, but just in size.....although the grasshopper may be actual size.
Yeah, so the idea that oil will ever get to $60/bbl for a sustained period of time when the Bakken is wildly profitable and the Middle East has to drill anything and everything to balance their budget is ridiculous.
Took the position back with my old company and start back Monday. Only thing that sucks is I broke down yesterday and went and bought a new 6s after not having a personal phone for so long. Figured I would need a phone if I was job hunting so now I have it and I'll be getting my work phone back so I'm kinda pissed at myself for caving in and buying it. Sorry I didn't go to North Dakota for you tops. Please still post I live there though. Xoxoxoxoxo
Started looking around this week, working with a couple of recruiters. I haven't looked for a job in 24 years.
Unexpectedly, my boss at my last job called me back and offered me a job working for him again. I worked there from fall 2011 to summer 2014 and did not like it (job in finance). Ton of hours, unfulfilling work, extremely stressful, a lot of real dicks, and client service got brutal at times. Left for a similar job that I've been at for almost two years, it's a slight upgrade in everything - slightly better work, slightly better quality of life, slightly more money - but still don't really enjoy it and feel similarly unhappy. He offered me to come back at a level much higher than I was previously, and my salary would be close to double what it was when I was there previously (about 80% higher than my current job). He also offered me verbally (he refuses to put it in writing) a big promotion in Spring 2017 (assuming everything goes well) which would really increase my compensation. Catch is, I'd need to move soon before they offer anyone else. I'm super torn right now. On one hand there aren't many jobs where you can increase your total compensation by ~60-75% (this is including bonus) and the big promotion next year is super enticing. On the other hand, I feel like I'd be taking a step back going to a job I hated working for people I wasn't nuts about and think I may be looking for a new job again before I even get that promotion. Any thoughts from those in a similar situation?
It's a promotion right? Take the promotion and the money and if you hate it, you have a stronger resume
Because I know your situation a little better than most, one thing to keep in mind is that you might find it difficult getting back to your current field if you go back to your old one (something you likely already considered). Not sure if you plan on staying where you are geographically, but have you reached out to funds back in the Midwest? You'd find that most workplace cultures and work/life balance are better, especially if you move down into the lower MM.
Question(s): Bob is likely leaving his job at Widgets & Co. in Feb/March 2017. Widgets' fiscal year, for bonus and raise purposes, ends in November. But Bob is in line for a rather large bonus, to be received after his year-end review in mid-December. The company has been good to Bob, but it's also been good for both parties. How early is acceptable for Bob to leave Widgets & Co., for it to not look totally like a "take the money and run" scenario? And hopefully not burn bridges/keep a good referral source? If the last day was mid-Feb, would you bring it up at the year end review in mid-Dec (keeping in mind it will likely need to be a 3-4 week notice)? Bob's really worried that if he brings up him leaving at his meeting, he won't get his bonus
give them appropriate notice, 3-4 weeks like you put if they're dicks cause you got a bonus 3 months before you quit that's on them and hopefully you've built enough goodwill they won't
Backstory. -boss quit last May - more or less ran the show until I got a new boss around August - got a new job/promotion last October. -worked both jobs until my replacement was hired in February -got a decent bonus in January My replacement just quit. No way they hire anyone before August. I'm an accountant and that means that there will be at least 2 months that fall on a quarter. (70 hour weeks). Training someone is really difficult and time consuming. Do I ask for a quarterly bonus?
do not bring it up because you haven't decided to leave at that point. come to the conclusion after much reflection and discussion with your family over the holiday/new years resolution periods
I'm a TA and review a lot of undergrad resumes. I roll my eyes every time I see "Proficient with Microsoft Office" on one of these little twerps' resumes. It's 2016 and you're 21, no shit you can use Microsoft Word. You could have used that resume line to show me what you've accomplished with your "proficiency", but instead I have to read this bullshit over and over.
you say that...but do you know how many JDs still say "Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint" as a requirement?
Yea, I see proficiency and experience in Microsoft Office in the description of pretty much every accounting job I've looked at.
You'd be surprised how many people don't really know excel. Shortcuts+lookups is basically 'advanced ' at some companies.
Have any of you ever requested raises/promotions based on increased responsibilities due to a coworker leaving? It sounds like a no-no, but hear me out. My current product category is split down the middle and me and another guy each basically run half. He has his product line and I have mine. If he were to leave, there would be no replacement for a while and by default id have to run my stuff and his too, otherwise sales drop. It would be a significant extra work load but I'd do whatever I needed to. My question is, is that something you just have to suck it up and do or is that a situation where you ask for an extra bonus/raise etc?
