HBO has a big problem with their stable of fighters, though... Many of them are elite Eastern Europeans/ex-Soviet types and they are exceedingly difficult to sell to Americans. I think putting this guy on the undercard is less about having a lead-in and more about trying to present a new fighter to their audience, but this guy won't have any sort of appeal.

Yeah, I understand it in theory. And I don't mind I guess, if he had had an actual opponent and not Mayfield filling in late. Like you said, he's not gaining any new fans tonight really. Only thing it'll do is help recognition wise if he fights Provodnikov at some point.
YASSSS. Ward and Kovalev is the best fight I can imagine right now other than maybe Canelo and GGG... Want to see Ward do some great things, but I get the feeling he will be a "what could have been" story.
