I was actually more impressed with Sycamore's beers than I expected. But nah Wooden Robot's facility is no where near that. Actually one of the first breweries to open that I wonder about surviving, unless they come up with some great brews. In terms of South End, no reason to be there over Sycamore or Triple C ... it's my first time in Free Range, and I'm two blocks down the road, so I may be biased. But these guys are gonna be huge. First new brewery that's really going out of it's way to be different. On tap now, a cream ale, a farmhouse, strawberry infused weiss, coffee brown and an oyster stout. If you're trying to move out of your hop head phase, this is the spot. I'm really impressed ...
Birdsong is another that comes to mind as doing things outside of the IPA realm. As much as i love NoDa, I'd like to see them come up with a new flagship. Their tap list has been the same for a really long time now ...
I've had some decent beers at sycamore in the past and my wife loves their coconut red ale, but I'm a little turned off because the last beer I had from them was a hoppy saison and legit the worst beer I've ever had. Although I am an ipa fiend, I would love to see a brewery around here that was more experimental. Wicked weed is really the only brewery in nc that does sours.
NoDa's current facility will be experimental once they're new one opens. I feel the CLT scene is starting to realize IPAs only won't cut it. Would love to see some sours around here too ...
stopped by Workman's Friend in Midwood last night, pretty swanky, uptown feel. Anyone tried their food?
Hey fellas, moving to Charlotte in a month or two. Please talk me into/out of uptown, NoDa or Midwood. TIA.
All fine areas. If you're looking for a 'big city' high-rise building with lots of amenities and can pay top dollar, Uptown. Surrounded by bars, restaurants, sports stadiums and fresh out of college sloots. If you are looking for a more neighborhoody feel, open to apts or something more duplex style, NoDa/Midwood. NoDa will offer a plethora of craft breweries and music venues, Midwood more diversity in bars/nightlufe and restaurants, with a slightly more hipster vibe. In any case all three neighborhoods are accessible to each other by uber/bike, so will probably come down to price and what style of housing you're looking for. I live in NoDa myself and love it ...
Do not want a big apartment complex. I've got a dog and don't really care to bring him through apartment hallways. He's a cocker and gets excited about new people so I don't need him diddling around every new person he meets so most likely a townhouse, duplex, quad or the like. I'm familiar with all three areas from visiting Charlotte just wasn't sure if there where any particulars the natives might know about. I like NoDa excluding complexes but looking online there doesn't seem like there's nearly as much available as I would have expected. I like Midwood/Elizabeth because I may end up trying to get on at one of the hospitals.
What are you using to search? Zillow/Craigslist have done well by me for homes/duplexes. Pop the 28205 zip in Zillow and that will cover PM/NoDa. Also try searching Country Club Heights, adjacent to PM. Might take you slightly out if waking distance range (mile+) ... Depending on your 'risk tolerance,' Plaza-Shamrock & Villa Heights are both near NoDa and very affordable. Those neighborhoods are transitional though, depending on experience with other large cities, might fit the bill. I technically live in VH, but can walk NoDa, and as a single male with a dog, very few concerns about crime ...
Mostly searching on craigslist and Zillow. As mid-August gets closer it's not such big deal, but most places advertised are available right now, but I'm over a month away from moving. I grew up in Philly, the crime aspect doesn't really faze me even though my 25 pound super friendly cocker is no crime deterrent. I'd like something very walkable though. Country club heights seems like it's a bit past walking distance from everything, no? Currently I'm in suburbs of Columbia, SC. Ditching the car and walk is something I'm really looking forward to. I really like all 3 neighborhoods and was wondering if there's some drawbacks I might not be aware of. It's probably gonna come down to what's available right when I'm ready to pull the trigger on signing a lease. TobiasFunke-Analrapist you know of anywhere in NoDa that will be showing EPL?
there is a really cool soccer bar right beside bb&t park courtyard hooligans. been to a few city games there and it's awesome accidentally went to the upstair's bar with Rich Homie Tron which turned out to be the chelsea fan club home base. they were having a christmas party but we were the first 2 there so we got a good seat and they treated us well.
I've been to Hooligans a couple times to watch Spurs games when visiting friends but I didn't even know they had an upstairs. Once it was so packed I couldn't get in the door. Meant anything walking distance from NoDa.
yeah upstairs is cool sorry i don't know too much about the noda area can't wait for the games to start again
Kind of skimmed over everything above (sorry) but one thing of note for NODA is the badass looking complex that is being built right near the main part of NODA is actually all subsidized/low-income housing so don't bother checking that one out. Nobody every responds anyways though so no big deal.
we gotta hit hooligan's a few times this fall/winter since all my other friends are fags that don't like soccer
Country Club might be a bit of a walk unless you're right on the edge, but def would not consider it suburban. Homes there aren't cookie cutter subs, no strip malls or anything. Can bike to the center of PM easily. Only draw back i can think of would be non apt buildings in Uptown, that's gonna be hard to find. Some nice duplexes/town homes can be had in 1st, 3rd and 4th Ward, but might be hard to find unless you're in town driving around the hood. In terms of soccer bars, not anything to choose from really in NoDa/PM, or sports bars in general for that matter. More artsy/hipster vibes ...
Can we get a group large enough to get a bar in the NODA/PM area to open up early and us make it a soccer bar outside of Holligans?
the redeveloped mill is finished, but yeah low income. the one that's going right on top of Neighborhood Theatre will be open to all but not ready in the next two months. The two apt complexes in NoDa are Highland Mill (lil pricey, weird lay outs, connected to Heist Brewery) and Renaissance (condos but always tons of rentals, pool there is hoppin) ...
doubt it. the bars in those area really don't try to cater to the sports crowd at all. Jackelope Jacks is near by in Elizabeth though, big soccer crowd ...
not in PM/NoDa though ... Jack Beagles opens early for brunch, if the game is on a basic station you could fit a good sized crowd on the patio ...
yeah, pretty lame. i'm not a total "fuck development" guy, but that Pecan/7th intersection is already a shit show. can't imagine what traffic will be like along 7th when that thing goes up ...
I'm an Arsenal guy, but i'm down with watching a few games in the bar. I was looking at Big Bens as well for another place to watch games at.
Once you meet Arsenal the person, you will realize that both club/person are gay/awkward. Can't wait.
So are we going for a TMB meet-up the first weekend of the BPL? Which bar will accomodate a group of men drinking heavily really early in the morning while yelling at the TV and carrying on slightly awkward conversation with each other?
CoastalOrange showed up at my house and let me borrow his car for a day within an hour of meeting me i think we'll all get along just well as long as you like booze and talking sports
I like soccer but not a huge fan and don't have a team, but I'm like the 12th man level super fan of drinking so I'm down.
Have a reason to drink and yell at a TV cheering on your team while also not having to watch Gameday, which is a shell of what it once was. Win. Win.
