Custance trade grade article Spoiler The deal Columbus Blue Jackets get: Brandon Saad, Alex Broadhurst, Michael Paliotta Chicago Blackhawks get: Artem Anisimov, Marko Dano, Jeremy Morin, Corey Tropp and a 2016 fourth-round pick Columbus Blue Jackets: A+ GM Jarmo Kekalainen was brought in to beef up the organizational talent with the Blue Jackets and has done so in short order. Columbus is stocked with young forwards and that depth allowed him to make the most impressive trade of the offseason in landing Saad. It also lands the Blue Jackets the left-winger they needed to accompany Ryan Johansen on the top line and puts Columbus back on track as an Eastern Conference playoff contender. “Brandon seems like a good candidate for that role [with Johansen],” said Kekalainen during a media conference call. “There could be some good chemistry between those two. Good playmaking centerman and [Saad has] great speed and ability to finish.” Saad’s winning pedigree is part of what especially attracted the Blue Jackets internally. This is a front office that is very cognizant of where this franchise is in its development and wants the right kind of players in that dressing room and on the ice. Saad already has two Stanley Cups on his résumé and scored eight goals in 23 playoff games for Chicago this spring. He’s 22 years old, just entering his prime and already has played 67 playoff games. Johansen, by comparison, has been in six. "Size, skates, skill, youth, shot,” texted one NHL scout when running through Saad’s attributes. Like everyone, the scout loved this deal for Columbus. "Yup,” he responded simply. Along with Saad, the Blue Jackets got a pair of prospects that ESPN Insider prospect analyst Corey Pronman rates as average. Pronman on Broadhurst: “Broadhurst is another skilled small guy but not of the same degree [as Dano and Teravainen]. Quality AHLer so far with talent but average prospect overall.” Pronman on Paliotta: “Paliotta had a huge season in college as a senior but like Broadhurst also a very average prospect. Big with some talent and can defend but don't love him. We'll see if he can handle a pro-level speed.” The Blue Jackets have already started contract talks with Saad’s camp and aren’t as vulnerable to an offer sheet if Saad hits restricted free agency as the Blackhawks were. “We would just match,” Kekalainen said. Chicago Blackhawks: B This was a trade predicated on a large gap in contract negotiations between the Blackhawks and Saad, and according to an NHL source, the Blackhawks expected an offer sheet for Saad on July 1. The Blue Jackets were not the team planning the offer sheet, and according to another source, neither were the Sabres, a team often speculated to be a possible destination for Saad. Still, that leaves 27 other teams. In Anisimov, the Blackhawks get the No. 2 center they’ve needed for years and can stop cycling through stopgaps like Brad Richards and Michal Handzus. He’s a great guy in the room and will help the transition from the KHL to the NHL of highly skilled winger Artemi Panarin, who will play for the Blackhawks next season. The Blackhawks really like Anisimov and have been trying to acquire him for a long time. Bowman hinted at a contract extension, and according to an NHL source, it’s expected to be a five-year contract although it hasn’t been finalized yet. “He fits in very nicely on our team,” Bowman said during a post-trade conference call. “He’s able to play offensively as well as in the penalty kill role. He’s done a little bit of everything in his career. For our needs, to know we have[Jonathan] Toews and Anisimov for years to come, that was a very big part of this.” The other big part of it was Marko Dano. The Blue Jackets did not want to deal him and Kekalainen told Dano that it broke his heart to trade him. The 5-foot-11 Slovakian center was the No. 27 overall pick in the 2013 draft and put up 21 points in 35 games for the Blue Jackets last season. Bowman sees an opportunity for him to learn the game from fellow Slovak Marian Hossa. “We think he has a very bright future,” Bowman said of Dano. “He impressed our scouts with his all-around play. [He’s an] active player, plays a high-energy game. Strong, competitive, physical. The goals he scores are from around the net.” Pronman puts Dano a notch or so below Chicago’s best prospect, Teuvo Teravainen. “High-end, offensive skill guy. Really shifty and creative,” Pronman said. “A lot of upside even if not the biggest guy. Up-and-down pro year this year but when on the ice makes a lot happen.”
@SlavaMalamud: Viktor Tikhonov, signed by the #Blackhawks for just over $1 mil, is coming off a $3.3 million deal in KHL. Kid really want to give it a go.
https://www.hockeyscap.com/armchair-gm/team/11303 (No Bickell or Versteeg, keep Sharp) 3.1 mil of space no Kruger or vet D https://www.hockeyscap.com/armchair-gm/team/11308 (No Bickell or Sharp, keep Versteeg) 6.8 mil of space no Kruger or vet D Keeping in mind we'll carry a 23 man roster. Assumes we move all of the Bickell money.
@andystrickland: #blackhawks center Andrew Desjardins has received multiple offers....likely to circle back to Chicago before signing.
@MarkLazerus: Source says #Blackhawks have been trying to figure out a way to re-sign Johnny Oduya, but the sense is it's still a long shot.
@wyshynski: Penguins weren't just trying to offer sheet Brandon Saad. They made a trade offer and Chicago opted to trade with Blue Jackets. suprising given their plethora of young D Stan must not think much of Sutter
So if they can move Sharp and Bickell they could resign Kruger and Oduya for 6 mil total. Don't see that happening. I'd rather try to get Ehrhoff on a cut rate 1 or 2 year deal.
So I wonder if the Blackhawks are waiting to hear from defensemen before they sign Kruger or let him walk.
4 teams still not at the cap floor. Seems like Montreal might be the only landing spot left for sharp. Still nothing on Kruger
Boston signed beleskey. Report last night islanders not interested in sharp. Does philly have the space?
Toronto? They aren't even above the floor. They should trade for him, feed him all season and flip him at the deadline for 2x what we'll trade him for.
Scott Grodsky @ScottGrodsky Between Svedberg, Pokka, Schilling and Liambas I'd guess one starts on the #Blackhawks bench, the other 3 @goicehogs
What a roller coaster of a offseason... when day things are rolling along nicely and the next shit looks bad. At this point I just want a finish roster to look at
@RumorBreak: #BREAKING - Hearing Flyers have an offer on the table for Patrick Sharp and includes Matt Read+ going back the other way.
@Aportzline Told #Blackhawks were at least $1M apart on AAV w Brandon Saad, likely $5M and $6M. I'd peg #CBJ deal - when done - at $5.5M or 5.75M per
if we shipped him off because we felt he wasn't worth 5.5 i'll be upset. I really don't want to see the deal come in at that number. Be higher so I wont be upset
I think Stand has single handedle slowed down Free Agency league-wide which is kind of hilarious. Oduya/Ehrhoff and the D are all waiting to see what will happen with the Hawks and the Sharp trade will completely reshuffle the deck on where forwards slot in. He is holding the FA "Frenzy" up.
@ChrisKuc: Defenseman Johnny Oduya has been waiting for #Blackhawks to clear cap space. We'll see if that continues.
Wonder if the Hawks go to arbitration with Kruger like they did with Niemi. Just string this out then see if you can fit him in at the end
@MarkLazerus: Andrew Desjardins' AAV is a mere $800,000. Per his agent, he "took far less to stay. Loves it there." #Blackhawks
@FriedgeHNIC: One note on Saad: haven't been able to confirm through team or agent, but word from other GMs was CHI's top offer was $5M AAV.
@ChrisKuc: Deals for Johnny Oduya and Marcus Kruger on hold while Stan Bowman works to clear cap space. Gotta wonder how long Oduya waits. #Blackhawks
This offseason has been fucking crazy but it's been such a slow drip it hasn't sunk in yet. Missed on Reilly TRADED SAAD Reupped Anisimov Made it through the draft and FA opening +3 days without trading salary out. Signed Tikhonov This Tikhonov signing... I mean I thought we'd sign him but never knew how he'd fit in. Where does he go? Are he and Desi and Danault Kruger replacements by committee? Also, an untold story by the beats is Brent Seabrook. They could start negotiating July 1st. That negotiation will decide the path of the Hawks for a LONG time. He could pull a Saad and say "my legacy is good, give me 8M or I'm out". That's a distinct possibility. If so that changes EVERYTHING. We'd have to: A) deal him OR B) load up this year for a repeat run (and let him ride off at the end). There is so much shit going on and I have 0 time to think and read about it here in SK so... I donno... Alot of complex shit is going on right now, much more than just "trade Bickell, trade Sharp, duh". I will say that I really really like Dano. He burrows in on the boards like Ben Smith, net front like Shaw but what makes him unique is that package comes in a highly skilled player. Love that addition. BTW, just prepare yourself mentally for Saad to put up 32G 40A or something next year. I'll still be OK with the trade. Point totals depend on PP1 time, end of story.
I agree on Dano. Q basically requires his guys to be strong on the boards and he fits that perfectly.
Yup Saad is going to be like Ladd when he went to Winnipeg. 70 points next year. Also I agree it will be interesting to see what seabrook does. He makes what, 5.8 now? Maybe the hawks could do 6 years 36-42 mil? Lets him basically retire a Hawk.
