Some girl from my area is attempting to ride the entire course with a couple other women. They are going out a day ahead of the men, will supposedly be the first time a woman has completed the Tour de France course if they make it. Not like I really give a shit or anything, just saw it in the paper the other day.

Really? In all of these years, no chick has completed it? I find that hard to believe.

agreed. but that's been his story for the past two years. After his dominating performances in 2010 at Roubaix and Flanders, people learned to just follow his wheel and make him do all the work. It happened at 2011 Roubaix, 2011 Flanders, 2012 Milan San Remo and again today.

Last year it wasn't as much his fault as it was his team. He had little or no support for most of the races. Maybe age is catching up with him? He used to be unstoppable in the TTs but these days he's far from a sure thing.

With that said, Sagan is unstoppable. He has 13 wins this year including 5 of the 8 stages at the Tour of California and 4 at the Tour du Suisse.

Tony Martin (Omega Pharma - Quick Step), the world Time Trial champion and favorite for the two long TTs, is out of the Tour. He fell today and broke his collarbone.

8:00 pm Edit: Now the team is saying he'll wait until tomorrow morning to make his decision.

6:00 am Edit: Tony Martin started Stage 2 with a cast on his wrist.

All the NBC announcers are on his dick b/c he's the only american sprinter. He can only win when his team drops him off at the finish line. This is the first year in recent memory where Garmin left Farrar's leadout train at home. That means he'll have to fight like a bitch to get a win, and he's awful at that.

Did you guys know there were crashes yesterday? If you didn't, you can see replays of them every 5 minutes during today's stage. I get that today's stage isn't exciting until the end, but I'll take more shots of the spectacular countryside over this mindless repetition of the crash footage. We're not Nascar fans.

Sagan is as amazing a rider as his celebrations are ghey. Much prefer stage conclusions that favor riders like him (and Valverde, Chavenal, etc.) than stages like today.

Don't watch the NBC coverage, watch the live Eurosport coverage on Steephill.tv . NBC's coverage is full of commercials, lacking in true analysis and just plain awful.

Sprint stages aren't worth watching until the last 20-30km. Everybody just putzes along until they hit that 20-30km mark and then the sprinter trains ratchet it up to 35mph as they try to reel in the break. If you didn't like todays stage, you'll hate Thursday and Fridays stages too. They're both flat as a pancake and built specifically for the sprinters. Saturday, though, things get real (see profile below)

While its not considered a true mountain stage, it will start to separate the men from the boys.

Sunday will be awesome too. Looks like a perfect day for the break to stay away

Today is the first day that things get real. Your regular NBC station is going to have live coverage of todays stage starting at 8 AM EST. I hate NBCs coverage (too many commercials, shitty analysis) so I watch any of these Eurosport feeds. I recommend you do the same if you don't want to see commercials every 2 minutes.

    Lots of abandons this morning:
    Amets Txurruka (Spa), Euskaltel-Euskadi
Ryder Hesjedal (Can), Garmin-Sharp - sad, sad, sad. He had a chance to podium.
    Robert Hunter (RSA), Garmin-Sharp
Tom Danielson (USA), Garmin-Sharp - dislocated shoulder, severe road rash (see bike below)
Hubert Dupont (Fra), AG2R La Mondiale - Fractured Spine
Oscar Freire Gomez (Spa), Katusha - broken ribs
Maarten Wynants (Bel), Rabobank - punctured his lung yet finished the stage yesterday.
    Imanol Erviti Ollo (Spa), Movistar
José Ivan Gutierrez Palacios (Spa), Movistar

Here's a look at Tom Danielson's bike after yesterdays crash

    Stage 8 results (Sundays stage):

What an incredible stage. The stage had 7 climbs and was only about 150km long (most stages are 175km+). So, that meant teams were going ape shit for the first 1.5 hours to try and get in the break. Then, once the break formed, it was full of really solid riders and everybody was going full gas.

In the end, it was won by Thibault Pinot, who just turned 22 in late May. He's the youngest rider in this years Tour, by just a few months over Peter Sagan. It was a great win for a team that desperately needs it. FDJ, like all of the other French-based teams, have some of the lowest budgets in all of cycling. They can't buy the big riders like Sky, BMC, Radioshack, Saxo-Tinkoff, Liquigas and Lampre can. So, they instead focus on finding young talent (like Phillipe Gilbert) and bringing it up through their youth system (like Rabobank and like Garmin is trying to get going in the US).

Anyone have more info on Teejay? I haven't heard of him before and he is tearing it up on the TT.

He's arguably the USA's next great Grand Tour (GT) contender. At the age of 23 he already has 2 grand tours under his belt (and is working on his third). So, not only is he young but he knows how to handle himself in a 3 week stage race. Of the Grand Tour contenders, I'd say he's one of the top 10 time trialists (behind guys like Wiggins, Contador and Evans but much better than the Schlecks, Nibali, etc). He can climb very well too, not with the best like Schleck and Contador but he can usually hang onto the wheels of guys like Cadel Evans.

Jonathan Vaughters "discovered" him and then he was brought up through the Rabobank development squad and then signed with HTC when he turned pro. Last year, when HTC dissolved, he got a huge contract from BMC. He was BMC's big hope in the Tour of California where he finished 4th overall (at age 23, that's damn impressive). Currently, he's supposed to be one of Cadel's climbing lieutenants in the Tour and he's trying to have a go for the young riders jersey.

While I still think he's a few years away from being a true GT contender, I can see him winning any of the one week stage races soon, like the Tour of California, Tour of Utah, or the Pro Cycling Challenge (essentially the Tour of Colorado). Maybe even this year if the Tour doesn't burn him out too much. In order to be the team leader for a GT, he'll have to wait it out at BMC until Cadel retires or move to another team once his contract is up.

He's badass. He's humble, works hard for his teammates and has greatness written all over him.

Fuckin' Brits. Hate 'em all. Except Cav, he's badass. Wiggins won the TT and is now 1:54 up on the 2nd place rider, Cadel Evans, with 2 weeks to go in the race. It looks like this has the potential to be boring as fuck from here on out, but there's a catch. With Sky being in such a good spot, with Wiggins @ 1 and Froome @ 3, other teams are gonna make them work themselves to death. I doubt we see Cadel or Nibali get free but who knows...

Today was the first rest day of the tour and all was quiet until Remi DiGregorio of Cofidis was busted at the team hotel and kicked out of the race. Apparently the French police have been investigating the Astana team for over 1 year (DiGregorio was on Astana last year) and they had Remi's phone tapped when he tried to order some illegal stuff.

Tomorrow is the first Alpine stage. The riders have to go up and down the Col du Grand Colombier (see pic below). Nibali and Evans are two of the best descenders in the peloton and the descent of the Colombier is tricky. They might try and put a move on Wiggins there...
