swordfish is a good eats fish and while it is a billfish its the only one prominently eaten. Therefore I have no problem taking one, as long as it is steaked and not trophied. They are a great fight. I did a tournament once, all the fishing happens at night. It's unlike anything else I've ever done.
A couple boats in Virginia have started doing overnight trips for sword fish. It is pretty crazy. They basically throw out lights to attract the squid which brings up the sword fish. Never been, but being 40-60mi out in the middle of the night seems like it would be a little unnerving.
I've done it in the gulf once, only caught a shark but we only drifted for 2-3 hours before a big storm front blew through and had to quit(70 miles offshore in a CC at night in 6-8 with pouring rain and lightening everywhere SUCKS).
there is nothing more frightening than being in a CC boat when weather goes to shit, IDC who you are.
im all for sport fishing, but ive watched enough documentaries to sour my perception of most deep fishing. catch and release (yes even the big stuff) IMHO.
Gonna do some ninja fishing tonight with the nephew. We may or may not be trespassing so my sister is going to be pissed if I get her son a ticket.
chilly enough that i needed long sleeves this morning. i don't want to believe the fish are this smart, but if i get out on the pond around 5-5:30 the beavers are still out fucking around and start going crazy. after that i have trouble getting bites. the last few times i decided to wait until just before the sun started to come up and the beavers had left. the fishing was better and i got easier bites. i have trouble believing this is actually happening, but it's becoming a pattern
Landed 5 this morning, 3 shorts and two nice ones. Caught the 5.5 lb'er on a KVD square bill (my favorite lure right now) thrown tight to a rocky shoreline. She blew up on it instantly so I probably hit her on the head. Hooked the 3 lb'er on a T-rigged brush hog in 20 feet of water by the dam.
Just got a text from the nephew. He dropped nearly $500 at Bass Pro last night buying a swim bait set up. 8' G. Loomis rod and an Abu Garcia Revo Winch 3 reel. He also bought three swimbaits (an 8" and two 6"). He's gearing up for when the big ones feast on the stocked trout. I'm jealous.
Check out what BP just bought my dad: 2012 38' Edgewater w/ trip 300s (Yamaha 4 strokes). Went out on it today for the first time, so bad ass. That thing will scoot. Gonna try and make it over to South Pass off Venice soon, apparently they have been wearing out the yellowfin lately.
Just about every one of our local lakes are stocked by the DFG at some point over the winter. The program runs from late October through March, I think. Each lake might get two or three stockings over the season. I'm heading to Lake Perris tomorrow morning with my dad. It's due to get a trout plant in two weeks.
I'm thinking about taking a few days off after one of my trips and staying out there to fish. You know any guides worth spending the coin on?
I always stay around la. Usually in garden grove. I know there are a bunch of reservoirs not far from the area
Hit the water this morning for a little tourney style family battle. My dad, brother, and I on our boat vs. the nephew, his dad, and my niece's boyfriend. Launch at 6 am, check in at noon. 13" keeper qualifier, best 5 total weight. Very slow day, only had one in the livewell (several shorts) at around 9:30 when they shoot me a text. Photo caption read "6 lbs man!" It was bright as fuck out there and hard to see the iPhone screen but something about this photo didn't look right. My initial thought was "Fuck, we lost." and I put my phone back in my pocket. We decided to make a move and I took my phone out to take a closer look. Realized they were out at the dam and figured shit we might as well head that way too. Just as we pull up to the dam, they send another text saying "Haha, don't be scared. It's just a dead fish we found floating." I knew something was up by the way my nephew was holding that corpse. Start working down the dam, targeting some deeper water and we limited out with two culls in the next 90 minutes, including two 3 lb kickers. Smoked them by 4 lbs. They shoulda never fucked with us.
Yesterday was a perfect day to get a few bass. Weather got up to the high sixties and they were eating. Could only cast from the shore, but still got three in a few hours.
The bass bite has been tough lately. Metering fish in deeper water and trying to get them with ice jigs, drop shot rigs, and Hopkins spoons but they don't want to bite. Local lakes got their first trout plants last week so it's time to break out the swimbaits. Also, going to try some kayak fishing Friday (if it doesn't rain) at a different little lake that doesn't allow boats with motors.
Watching a Kevin van dam marathon on YouTube. Got invited to fish at the Clinton hunt club this summer. There are four ponds and one is nothing but stumps and standing timber. Gave up a 13 pounder a few years ago.
Can anybody give me some pointers on fluorocarbon line? I've always just fished mono, but thinking about going that direction.
it's pricey but Seaguar InvizX is the best I've used. The feel of fluorocarbon will make you forget about mono, until you snap of a couple of fish. That said, I only use mono when fishing topwater
you could use the fluorocarbon as a leader to cut cost and increase the feel. It is amazing how much more you can feel with fluoro
