also have see people put rebar, pvc pipe, and bamboo in a bucket at various angles and fill it with quikcrete
We stripped an old chicken house for pvc pipe. Also been saving coffee cans and baby formula jugs to use as bases. We are going to start making small ones for the swallower waters around the dock and campsites.
those are great especially when bream and crappie are bedding. really the simplest ones to make. I saw a diagram looking for that picture that suggested you find a point or creek channel and place in a line following the depth change into deeper water. gives fish cover moving in and out of shallows Spoiler sorry if what I just explained was the equivalent of teaching you how to tie your shoes again. I like things like this though.
I'm finding a different one for some reason. this one shows using them on a bare shoreline drop off to create a focal point for fish there. you can duplicate it along a point or following a creek channel to deep water placing them every so often along the drop off
I made some with 4" pvs then drilled holes through it and used 1" pvs as the limbs- put some concrete in them and threw them in the pond
HOOSINSC dawgonit y'all have to start listening to the Itinerant Angler podcast if you haven't already.
Slow night in Canaveral on Tuesday. Lots of ladyfish, undersized bluefish, and a couple small snook. Also saw about a 40+ inch red cruising near our boat but couldn't get him to eat. We're already planning a snook trip down in Sebastian Inlet once snook season opens back up next week. Pretty excited for that, but I'm more excited for the spring when offshore really kicks off.
There's so much great info on just about every aspect of fly fishing. I just recently subscribed and am way past addicted.
just got back from a work trip. fuck this would have been perfect. going out again in two weeks and this is on the itinerary. thanks.
i've got a work trip at the end of february and i'll be driving from SC to Chicago. Gonna need these.
Going to try and fish the delayed harvest at Amicalola Falls State Park this weekend. DNR stocked there, Smith Creek, Toccoa, and Morgan Falls tailwater DH sections as well in anticipation of a nice weekend. Hopefully it won't be a zoo
HOOSINSC dawgonit y'all ever fished Duke's Creek at Smithgall Woods conservation area? Pretty much a public trophy trout stream with naturally reproducing fish...only fishable Wed/Sat/Sun and you have to make reservations...15 slots in the morning and 15 in the afternoon. All barbless, all artificial, all catch and release. http://www.gon.com/fishing/dukes-creek-trophy-trout-on-public-water http://www.tu.org/blog-posts/100-best-dukes-creek
I had some grad school buddies that used to go up from time to time. for whatever reason I never made it with them. heard good things.
depends on how much. keep an eye out for details like dry storage, rod and paddle holders, and anchor pulleys. the anchor pulleys(I think that's what you call them) are clutch when you're in moving water.
Interested as well. I'd be fishing in inland lakes and nearshore in Maine. Any good resources on the web to get started?
Think I've narrowed down the potential kayaks: Criteria: Sit on top 400lb+ capacity 30+ inches wide 12' or longer Since this will be used both in lakes and in the ocean, a kayak closer to the 12' mark may even be preferable to 14. Want something wide for the stability since I'm new to this. Anyone have experience with any of the following? Vibe Sea Ghost 130 (or Dace Angler 3.6 if I can get it shipped from Australia for cheaper) Field and Stream Eagle Talon Heritage Angler 14 Malibu x-13 Ocean Kayak Prowler 13 was just a touch too narrow to make the shortlist.
Damn. I just came in here to talk kayaks, glad this convo started. I just picked up a new to me Old Town Predator on Saturday. 13ft and already rigged up the Lowrance DSI 4X. Quite an upgrade from my old as balls Mainstream I bought nearly 10 years ago. I'm getting into tournament fishing this year, so I needed to up my game on something that could cover more water and more importantly I could stand in.
I really want a Predator. They give you a ton of options in terms of upgrades and new toys to add on.
I'll try to take some pics tonight. The guy I bought it from really did it right. Had all of the LEDs and the depthfinder installed by the dealer, so everything is clean and siliconed back up right. First tournament is in March on my home lake so I'm getting pumped.
heads up for fly guys... the Fenwick Aetos rods are selling real cheap on Amazon and are pretty damn good. Also the Echo Base rods are selling for $89.
I have an Aetos spinning rod. Big fan. Use it for redfish, trout, and flounder and have yet to have an issue. I'd definitely recommend them, as well.
my buddy just bought the 8wt 10' rod for $119. the msrp is like $190 and they rated near the top in performance
I haven't been able to get out and do any meaningful ice fishing yet this year, but I have been able to take my oldest kid out a few times. This past weekend, my brother met us out on the lake with his daughter and the fish were cooperating.
They're awesome. My friend gets them for like $100ish too. Their sensitivity is pretty great, but there's no drop off in backbone either. Fenwick's have become my go-to
Just bought a Catch 2000 MR. Looking forward to using it. I know some ppl that destroy trout with them.
I have only fished from a kayak a few times. I fish from my canoe mostly. a 14' old town. it's been great and I've used it a ton, but it's frustrating to use in bad current or weather. here is a link from ICAST this year with the new stuff right now. should give you an idea of what brands/models to look for. http://www.scout.com/outdoors/wired2fish/story/1564149-new-fishing-kayaks-for-2016-icast keep in mind the ones shown are all fancy and there are lower end models usually. a few of the salt water guys here have kayaks iirc.
My problem comes being a bigger dude at 230 lbs. Need something that can handle the weight and remain stable. Ending up with an Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game II I think.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-itinerant-angler-podcast/id125855444?mt=2&i=14696479 podcast on mako sharks on a fly. shits insane.
Makos are so awesome. I was near a rig one time and we thought we had a tuna based on how fast he was swimming. He came up to the boat, going a million miles per hour, and then we realized it was a shark. While we were trying to get the hook out, the Mako flipped himself into the boat. Had to beat that ADD bastard with a gaff because he wouldnt settle down. Pretty obvious they go 100 mph when theyre excited.
Well, I was out there this morning but sadly nothing like that. Saw a few fish on the flasher, but apparently nothing was interested in our minnows or spikes. Bummer.
I'm going to be in the gulf (corpus christi) next week for 6 days. Any recommendations? Wanna try to do some shore fishing
Combining size and fish, you will probably never catch a better tasting fish. Would dominate that right now.
First time I ever had tripletail, I'm now a big fan. Threw a little Cajun seasoning and then a couple lime slices over him and threw him in the oven. Fucking thing tore my hand up though. Pulled him out of the cooler after being in their for 2 hours. Bit the piss out of me, blood everywhere lol. Never knew they were so temperamental lol
