also incredibly jealous of flyfishing northern Arkansas. The White River and it's tributaries have some of the largest trout in the world and i think the spin tackle brown trout world record came from the Little Red.
19" trout at 4 lbs? That would be the fattest trout I've ever seen by a large magnitude. That fish weighs half of that
Thats a great trout. Glad to hear things are picking up. I'm scheduled to hit the Biloxi Marsh next week and might peak into Davis Bayou the day after, but it looks like we might see some serious rain.
It's hard to beat a 9' 5wt for a do-it-all freshwater outfit jham23. It's my go-to for everything from spotted bass to carp to trout, and I'll throw everything from size 26 tricos to weighted crawfish patterns on it with relative ease. I'm a self taught fly-caster, but I have a lot of bad habits and would definitely have gone to a Saturday lesson at the local fly shop if that was a possibility when I was getting into things. The best advice I can give a newcomer is to slow it down when you're casting...you'll be able to feel the rod load much better, and the transfer will be that much smoother. Don't worry about distance as the vast majority of bass and trout will be caught within 20' or so, and a natural presentation at short distances will outfish an unnatural presentation at range 10/10 times.
Got this bad boy last week and took it out for cobia. First cast, 60 lbs sailfish takes my ass for a ride... And we were only 2 miles from shore. Almost unheard of this far north. Broke my line after about 40 seconds but it was pretty badass.
Spent Saturday on South Boulder Creek. Flows are low right now, but the fishing was excellent. Mostly browns and rainbows in the 8-12" range on a size 16 brassie nymph and size 12 sakasa kebari.
I'm really hoping it hold off this weekend, it's supposed to rain -i might fish even if it does rain. I've read some recent reports out of Biloxi Marsh that were not good at all, supposedly very few fish right now.
area has been hit and miss, especially since katrina. trout wont be out in full force for another month there, but it should be a good day to drink, anyway. im mainly going to scout some shallow water spots.
Really appreciate the help. I think I'm going to go with the 5 wt 9 foot. I've fished the little red with ultra light spinning reels and had a blast so ready to head up that way with a fly rod in hand.
Check out this forum and see what they're talking about. It's a shitty format, but all the rivers are covered. Also search for a guy named John Wilson. He's a Welshman I believe, but is one of the top guys on the White River system. http://flyfishingarkansasandmissouri.yuku.com
Can you tell trout identification is not my thing? Still can't tell the difference between brook and brown. Correct, right below a dam mid afternoon.
Not a bad day for browns. 7 in 3 hours #14 purple psycho prince and a purple scud Couple of ones on the day
Black caddis right now. Waiting on stoneflies come the first part of the season, then hendricksons in the middle followed by sulphurs in the latter part of spring. A good handful of the streams have been blown out from localized storms.
Having major brown algae bloom issues in the river I catch reds and specks in, leading to a tremendous fish kill. Pics in spoiler. Slot reds, snook, trout, and juvenile flounder all washing up. Spoiler More https://www.facebook.com/bill.chard...0205434799818639.1073741991.1509430702&type=3 Going to be absurd when the water actually starts to heat up.
I forgot to post this when it happened. My buddy pulled up this 54" while ice fishing back in January. He saw it lurking on the camera and it smoked a perch he was reeling up.
Yeah. He's got a fish house that most guys would kill for. 28' x 8'. Double queen beds. Full kitchen. Bar. Full tv set up with satellite that he also has hooked up to his underwater camera so he can watch the fish bite on his 42" flat screen in real time.
Just got back from a White River trip, fishing was awful. Managed 3 rainbows the first day, 1 brown 1 rainbow the second. Did get to do 37 miles down the white in my kayak over two days though. Took this pic trolling for twitter likes from K2 Coolers. [/IMG]
Going down to orange beach staying right by the flora bama in late May. Anyone have any recs for a good guide? back country/ fly fishing for reds would be my first choice but if it's not worth the time/ in season to do so then I wouldn't be opposed to going after some snapper or something like that. Never fished down there so I really don't have much of a clue on where to look. Last summer was my first time on a skiff chasing reds in Hilton head and I've wanted to get back out ever since It was the most fun I have had fishing since I was a kid. FWIW know someone was asking about fly gear- I throw a 9' 5wt reddington crosswater. I'm only going after bass/crappie in lakes and rivers for smallies. It has been a great starter rod and haven't had a hog overpower my equipment yet. Still a lot to learn but it has been a blast learning a completely new style of fishing, much more rewarding/relaxing (most of the time)
Don't know of anyone in Orange Beach, but you could always call J&M Tackle at 251-981-5460 and see if they can recommend someone. I've heard good things about Baz Yelverton out of Gulf Breeze as well if you're willing to make a bit of a drive. If you can get bay side after dark, dock lights will provide plenty of action with speckled trout and the occasional redfish. I'd also walk the beach very early in the morning looking for any signs of activity - feeding fish/birds, nervous water, rips between bars, etc. and fish them. I've caught ladyfish, pompano, redfish, Spanish mackeral, small jacks, and even flounder doing this. A stripping basket is very nice to have, but not a necessity. Orange Beach is so close to the 100 fathom line and blue water that that's generally what most of the reputable guys down there are doing.
Thank you sir. Thought I would post here before I did some research. Got to looking on Orvis and damn it they have some badass trips all over the world. Trying to convince pops to hit Belize 6 days at el pescador. Fly fishing school but looks like only two hour class before you go out. 2 people per guide. You get a 908-4 Helios 2 w/ arbor Iv reel line leaders tippets and flies included in the package... 4K for the trip not including the flight. Could go to Cambodia for 12k fuck I need a new job
I had about 3 years worth of fishing trips planned before finding my bff/moving/changing jobs. Still think there's a good chance I do Costa Rica or Baja next year, though it certainly won't be solely fishing focused.
10 slabs yesterday between a buddy and me. Buddy in pic, but i caught this on a crankbait in about a foot of water Cleaned and cooked them all yesterday
http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs...rld-record-57-inch-muskie-caught-in-minnesota Don't know if this was posted before. This guy is in a recent itinerant angler podcast recently
went out yesterday, got a couple of bites but thats about it. i have no idea what bass in arky like this time a year, tried everything from crank to popper to plastic. about to go hit it up again in an hour or so. did see a huge cotton mouth tho so I'm wearing my boots today
Cross posting from another forum. Went in the afternoon around 3PM 3/26 to Katrina Reef south of Ocean Springs. Wind was absolutely howling, felt like 25-30mph. Live shrimp under cork. You had to let the cork drift far from where we were , almost all of my line would be out. And then there was a little honey hole where all the trout were hanging out. It was consistently in the same spot far from the boat. Had a few 14 and 15" but several fat 18" and a 19". Some good sized trout there. Ended up with 10 of them then the wind was so bad we had to leave. Caught 10 in about 2 hours. If we stayed on that spot for a half day we could've put a lot in the boat. We also had too many people trying to fish in the boat kinda messing things up. This is the only pic I got, was before we had 10 in there.
How good of eating is sea trout? I only became aware of it via this thread, honestly so know very little of the fish.
