That's awesome. You certainly kicked my ass. Ran to Cat Island before the weather hit to look for a few reds to grill for the family tonight and could only find two 14" ones. Only stayed for an hour or so.

Kept one to eat for me because that's how it should be.

    It's a fantastic fish. I'd say A-. Especially the 14-17" ones.

    Inshore eating rankings

    1 Tripletail
    2 Pompano
    3 Flounder
    4 Redfish
    5 Trout

Really, I think you can put 1-4 in any order you want.

Fresh (I'm talking hours old max) mullet is a dark horse. So fucking good fried or smoked.

I almost asked the exact question and would have included mullet.

    I'd say:
    1. Blackfish/Tripletail
    2. Flounder
    3. Trout
    4. Pompano
    5. Redfish (redfish would be higher if I could keep 14" ones.

Mullet is the wildcard. Fresh out of the water is as good as it gets. Two days old is inedible.

Sidenote edit: after eating with coonasses all weekend, I'd like to clear this up. Shrimp is 1 trillion times better than crawfish.

i went to cat on friday on a buddy's boat. We tried fishing some banks on the north west side then went around the tip to the south side and fished some marshy/bayou looking areas and didn't catch a damn thing. There were little bait fish everywhere. I should've put on a top dog or some sort of suspending mirrlure but didn't. I've never been able to really tear them up at Cat. I need someone to show me where to go.

A lot of ppl I know would strongly disagree with yalls rankings of speckled trout. Many ppl think its the best inshore eating fish. Many ppl far prefer it to redfish. Lots of ppl don't like redfish which I think is stupid as hell. I eat the crap out of redfish. On the half shell all day long. Either grilled or baked in an oven, you can't go wrong. It doesn't take much either I usually just do some tonys and EVOO. bomb.com

    (1) tripletail
    (2) speckled trout
    (3) redfish
    (4) flounder

been too long since I've had pompano for me to remember what it taste like.

snapper is probably my favorite fish overall.

    From what I've eaten:

    1.) Tripletail
    2.) Redfish
    3.) Pompano
    4.) Flounder
    5.) Speckled Trout
    6.) Mangrove snapper
    Still waiting on my snook.

Still can't get over how temperamental tripletail are. The one I caught was a mean son of a bitch lol. Also, had no idea that they have bacteria infested barbs, like a catfish, on the dorsal and ventral sides. They're basically built to fuck your life up if handled incorrectly.

2nd kayak tournament of the year coming up Saturday. Last's month's tourney was tough with over half of the 65 entrants (including me) boating one fish or less. Should be much better weather and fishing Saturday. I'm off on Friday so going over to pre fish.

It was free, so didn't have much say. As long as it'll work and I can cast I think I'd be good to try it out.

I grew up only fishing saltwater so I literally have no clue what I'm doing. Bass fishing doesn't appeal to me at all, but fly fishing seems kinda cool.

I'm on my way back to Montgomery right now to finish a few things then heading to the beach for the weekend and will be here for good at the start of next week. I plan on going next weekend for sure, so I'll post closer to time if y'all want to get up. I've got some extra smaller rods as well that'll make things more fun, but that 8wt will be perfect for stripers on Lanier and anything inshore on the coast.

Yeah, I figured it would be heavier since it was won at a salt water fishing club. :tebow:

Are the different line weights/reel strengths too or is that all relatively the same.

I'm not sure I quite understand your question. Reels are a bit more flexible than rods in terms of pairing with certain line weights...it really just depends on the outfits overall balance. You can also over-line today's super fast action rods by a weight or two. I have no idea if this answered your question though.

A lot of reels are sized in ranges instead of specific weights. 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, etc. You generally want at least 100 yards of backing, though on smaller reels that number is closer to 75 yards.

What type of flies y'all throw for largemouth and any certain way you strip? Mainly throw woolly buggers and clousers pretty standard (fishing a 5wt) wondering if anyone had a go to bass fly

There is a place at The Wharf that is an Orvis dealer, but that's about it - I think. J&M and Sam's won't have anything you want.

I used to only throw flies in my teens but have gotten out if it - but a new fly rod purchase this month has me fired up to get back.

So, I'm not really sure as there has been a lot of turnover, but I think that's your best bet.

missed the stripping part, are you fishing moving water or still water?

still water i try to get as deep as possible without hanging up. using a sink tip before your leader helps when you're getting deeper than 5', and for streamers you can use a much shorter leader. I just start with slow 6" strips and then start making adjustments until I get a follow or strike.

HOOSINSC Owsley appreciate it. Fish stillwater lakes/ ponds more because they are easier to get to but as the weather turns going to be floating the harpeth river a good bit going after smallies and redeye bass. Fun river to fish if you ever come through middle tn/Nashville good sized small mouth crush imitation crawfish out there same goes for flukes. Good size drum catfish rockbass/redeye bluegill shell cracker in there hard to get skunked even on a short float.

2 shy of a limit yesterday. Cross posting my report from other fishing forum:
13 keepers. Several were 13 on the dot. At one point I noticed a slick. Threw my popping cork right on top of it. Instantly got taken under, and a nice one too. Probably 16 inches. I was in such a hurry to throw it back out there because I knew there was a feeding frenzy going on. I think I got 3 from that slick. It was a school moving along the bayou. Just as quick as it was there, it was gone. First time I've seen it right there in Davis where I fish. The rest of them were just grinding it out. I probably could've caught a limit but we were doing a crawfish boil and I had to head in.

    These were from Friday

this is one of those from friday just showing that he's 18 inches
