i'm surprised every time. i don't think i've seen any of the other area of the US have such a consistently different pattern to them. the east tennessee browns now have a bit of a color variance, but that's more dietary.
Good stuff. Shrimp are always the safe option. Sucks that the flounder was undersized, but at least you got some action. I just got home from going offshore on my friend's boat. Boated 1 kingfish, had 3 cut us off (using steel leader), had a couple dolphins slip off and had a wahoo cut us off. That bitch was making the reel scream. Also ran over a 30ish lbs. cobia on our way in. Circled around for about 10 minutes hoping he would pop back up but no dice. Early in the day we had a 7-8 foot hammerhead chasing one of the pogies that we were trolling on the surface. Didn't take, shockingly.
Going to throw the long rod at some tarpon next Friday. Hopefully I'll have some good stuff to share.
Found out I'm going to the Keys for lobster mini season last week of July for 5 days. Going lobster diving and spearfishing so I'm stoked. First time to the Keys, first time lobster diving, and first time spearfishing. My speargun was delivered earlier today. I was told to expect to shoot a few hogfish, but the main target will be grouper. I've spent a lot of time reading about spearfishing and buying the rest of the gear. Should come back home with a nice haul when it's all said and done.
Cleaned a few whites and stripers at Texoma this weekend. Spawn is over all the fish were empty of eggs. Prospector
it's either a shoal bass or possibly the bartram's bass (which is native to the savannah river system)
Where'd it come out of? Shoalies are endemic to the Flint River drainage, but have made their way to the Hooch one way or another. Beautiful fish - river bass are so much fun.
Anybody ever do any kayak fishing around Seaside/Grayton Beach area of FL? Renting a house on 30A in July, will be my first time down there with a 'yak. Gonna try and hit the bay for some reds, trout, flounder etc. What really intrigues me is trying my hand beyond the breakers. Anybody familiar with the area? Would like to get into to some cobia and snapper if possible.
the chattooga river near Mountain Rest, SC. found a cool article about some of the bass in the area. based my bartram's guess entirely off this picture. https://eastern-fly-fishing.myshopify.com/blogs/features/16247137-broad-river-ga
How he got that cobia without clubbing the fuck out of it is beyond me. They go ape shit as soon as we bring them over the side of the boat. Has to be even worse on a kayak
Theres not much structure on the gulf side, so you may have to cruise and look for fish or just blind cast, but there are fish out there. If you do make the short drive to the bay you can find some nice grass beds that are near the shore - nice early morning topwater bite.
Yeah, guide from Atlanta is working down there now. http://l.instagram.com/?u=http://ri...NoLku_q6gUCuOiMLJ7cD--r6R8QdaPAwJb8kkfzt7DhWw http://riverthroughatlanta.com/our-guides/aaron-tyre/ I can get his number if you want to go the guide route and feel free to use my name.
Dead drift/slow troll cigar minnows and various plugs and you'll have a great chance at king/Spanish mackerel, bonito, jacks, etc. You don't have to go far, and it's not unheard of to catch a blackfin or dolphin too. You can also jig structure if you can find it.
I've got Lowrance on board so I'll be able to see structure if it's there. Anybody got links/numbers for any wrecks or state placed habitat. Not looking for any secret stuff unless you got some you don't mind PMing.
So I've decided I'm gonna teach myself to fly fish. I've only done it once. The plan is to train myself at ponds catching bluegills. What recommendations would any of you have for cheap starter fly gear? I'd like to keep it pretty low cost until I get more into it.
Saw about 8 fish, all deep, and got a half assed shot at one where I had to throw at about 8 o'clock from a 12 o'clock position after it popped up there post-sounding. Sucks, but that's the risk you run on a one day trip for tarpon this time of year. Still picked up some valuable tips, and had a guide that worked his ass off. Beat the shit out of working too, that's for sure.
How much do you want to spend? Invest money in rod first, line second, and reel third for this. For bluegill and small bass you'll rarely bring a fish to hand, and the extra money spent on the rod and line will be much more valuable to your profession as a caster. Read books, join online fly fishing communities, and prepare to become an addict.
I'd like to keep the initial purchase $100 or under. If things go well and I end up addicted, which is probable, I'll jump it up. I'm in Nebraska with few local opportunities other than ponds and lakes. I do have customers on the western slope of Colorado I'll need to visit in August/September and a good friend with access to the Snake in Nebraska, so that's why I'll get the learning curve out of the way on panfish. I have no illusions of learning all the hatches at this time, I just figure on stopping by a fly shop in the area.
Any recommendations on best way to cook yellowfin tuna? Boss gifted me a slab of some they caught off the coast of NC. Looking to cook this thing up today
Have a charter booked for June 22nd out of Clearwater Beach. 9 hour trip, about 40 miles out; gag grouper season is open and we'll be able to keep red snapper. First serious trip I've done out of the Gulf so I can't wait. Just want to bring back a cooler full of snapper and grouper.
one of my best friends is down in the Keys all this week and next week. he's getting shit on so bad by this weather.
The friend I'm going with in July is down there now as well. Not sure why he, a few others I know, and seemingly a bunch of other people are down there fishing.
IIRC, but there are others that know much more than me... it's when the tarpon migration is happening. lot's of fish moving through the area.
Anything honestly, lol. Will be with my kids so I am just hoping for success. Sure we'll get into snook and redfish. The charter type is called "backcountry". Description is close to shore and involves general island sight seeing.
Hmmm, I'm guessing you'll be hitting the reefs for permit (though they're out of season; still supposed to be a blast of a fight), snapper, barracudas, etc., but if it's backcountry then idk. Should be a fun trip regardless, especially with kids. I can't wait to go next month.
If you're doing a backcountry trip, inquire about Flamingo. It's not a bad run from the Keys, and it's absolutely amazing.
My friend just sent me pics from his trip. Shot 11 hogfish, a couple snappers, one schoolmaster. He told me he only goes down there to spearfish because he says he can fish for the same stuff up in Canaveral.
Nice! My college roommate is a guide down there now. A couple years ago, some magazine named him one of the top 5 guides in the country. Anytime I see that folks are going down there to fish, I wonder if they're going to be fishing with him. I realize there are plenty of guides down there and it's not all that likely.
Planning a weekend trip to Charleston sometime this summer buddy has a skiff and does some local guides pumped to get my first crack at some back country on the fly. Heading to Costa Rica in mid august crossing my fingers I can cross a Rooster off the bucket list. Don't think marlin are running while I'm down there and don't want to waste an entire day chasing one only have two days scheduled to fish
