Girlfriend's mom avoided all damage to car and homes in Pearland from the actual storm. Goes out today for food, comes up on high water, tries to turn around, misjudged end of road, drives into ditch, front end submerged, car likely toast.
Watching channel 2.... damn they flooded some ridiculously expensive parts of town to get to this $160 billion estimate. Army corps of engineers aren't very good at flood modeling.
No one had models for this kind of flood. In Fort Bend around the Brazos river the County Judge basically called it an 800 year event and said they didn't have models for it at all.
Southwest canceled my Friday flight yesterday. Have to fly out of Austin. Hoping I can call back now that they're opening up tomorrow and get back in a flight out of Houston.
Flood modeling software can get up to maybe the 500 year event, but that's even dicey - something like this, there's no real way to model
I've been through 3 100 year floods and an 800 year flood. I wasn't here for Ike. Time to adjust the models as I'm only 31.
yeah its called living in a Swamp someone who is familiar with Louisiana should realize this sooner rather than later
Dump your insensitivity during this time to bash Houston for no reason other than a hatred for a city you've likely barely visited deserves a giant "Fuck you" from all of us. It's truly pathetic and I generally enjoy your posts. But you have been insufferable this past week.
I'm not even bashing them right now it will literally always be a problem with cities at or below sea level and not even the fucking Stephen Hawkings of the Army Corp of Engineers will be able to truly figure it out get a grip dude
You have been truly awful in the hurricane thread and you know it. Then you come in here and pick at some low hanging fruit for your enjoyment. I'll leave it at that
Pretty funny to watch a fat, pathetic loser who has to have strangers on the internet pay for him to lose his virginty take shots at people who just went through a tragedy in some weird sad attempt to boost his self esteem.
the issue is not the at sea level The issue is that City planners allowed unmitigated sprawl without accounting for proper drainage. areas that haven't flooded ever have flood 3 times in 3 years.
I do financial modeling and statistics for a living and am quite good at it. These are what you'd call in the statistical world "3 sigma events." That means it's a 99% chance this never happens again in our lifetime. I've seen 4 of them. That means the model isn't working and needs to be adjusted. Do not insult my intelligence because you know nothing about me.
Houston downtown is 50' above sea level in most places and most of the metro area is at least 20-30' above sea level. Fuck off Dump.
Loss of native marshland, huge increases in impermeable surfaces, and general incompetence by the Corps all play a role. I work with a bunch of flood modelers, and do a bit myself, but can't comment on this level of damage. I just don't think it's a huge coincidence that natural disasters are getting progressively worse. Hope all of y'all, and your loved ones, are safe.
This is from a year and a half ago and explains the deterioration well. https://projects.propublica.org/houston/
Not sure if this was posted earlier. During trial, my boss always yells at us for "self-inflicted wounds." I'll footnote this article with 1) It was written in 2012 and 2) I am not an expert. That said, it made my blood boil: http://www.houstonpress.com/news/if-the-addicks-and-barker-dams-fail-6594886
If I am driving in from Austin to the Heights tomorrow after 5, should I go a different way than I-10 to 610? Have heard traffic is a nightmare. Also, is it realistic to drive from the Heights to 1-10 and Dairy Ashford and back on Saturday morning?
Take 290 into town. I drove in last wknd to help my parents (they live in memorial bend) and anything west of gessner (including gessner) was a bit of a shitshow. You should be able to get to dairy ashford from i10, but I hear north of i10 is still flooded. Def use Waze for that drive and brace yourself for some shitty traffic
