Dude I went to HS with is now a professional guide in Kansas. He travels to hunt a lot, and posted this two bow kills from last week in New Mexico.
So the next day I belly crawled literally hundreds of yards over the course of a couple hours to get within 80ish yards of 3 of them. There's a lot of cactus out there. I didn't get a shot. I need a cutout to hide behind.
I don't get pronghorn hunting- I went prairie dog hunting in Wyoming a few years ago, we had to be careful because the pronghorn were just walking around. We were shooting hundreds of rounds and they'd walk right into the path. Within 50 yards sometimes. Before that I really wanted to go eventually, after that I didn't see much sport in it. If you're having to belly crawl that far though I must be missing something- or Wyoming pronghorn are just downy level.
A pronghorn archery kill is impressive. I spent the better part of 4 days trying to do it and the closest I got was about 95 yards after crawling for what seemed like miles.
Dude I couldn't get anywhere near these things without them running. They're fast as hell with great vision. Maybe because it's public land they're more skittish? Rifle would be easy as hell, though, since they're just out in the open all the time, which is why it takes years to draw a tag.
There were a bunch on the other side of a hill that I could hide behind later that day. Was definitely my best prospect but when I was moving from one hill to the next I walked through a thin valley and got spotted by one. That's all it took. If you could find a place with hiding spots it could be done but they're out in the open so often that getting that close is so damn hard.
Yeah anything with a rifle in that terrain would be easy as hell. Going to have to look through my pictures and see, it was crazy how much they didn't give a shit we were there. Sitting on a shooting bench 10 feet from an old suburban and they were just walking around like it was nbd. My only experience with a pronghorn, not close enough for a bow that's for sure. Spoiler
My shitass attempt at a phone pic while I was crawling. Cattle graze public ground, which something I did not realize.
Turkeys do me this way. They can tell that I don't hunt them , so I usually have to shoo them away like chickens
Passed my old skinning knife on to my eldest and just got a new Buck 103. Ready for the season to get here
Turkeys do it to me during deer season and the deer do it to me during turkey season. I had 3 deer walk within 5 yards of my blind this past turkey season. They promptly walked over to the tom and hen I was working and started playing with them until they ran off. Fucking cocksuckers. Maybe I should throw some turkey decoys out in the food plot this deer season and see what happens.
I've heard of this. Kind of like putting a few goose deocys near your duck decoy spread. Gives them a little confidence to come in. If you do it, I'd be interested in the results.
couple of early candidates to get got. need to adjust camera though, my dad set it up too close Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler
live in texarkana, was on my way home from fayetteville. unfortunately our hunting club is on the the east side of arkansas (on arkansas river)
posted in the firearm thread also. dows anyone have any experience with the Tikka T3? Looking at picking up one in either 30-06 or 308 for deer and such.
Any of you Midwestern/Great Plains guys hunt wild pheasant? I've shot pen birds and am going to Indiana this winter to hunt semi-wild, but I've never hunted 100% wild birds. I'm dying to.
Had 3 little doe under my stand two nights ago and had to sit 45 minutes in the dark until they left.
Used to do a ton of it. Never shot penned birds before. Pheasant hunting is so awesome if there are birds but the population is pretty shitty in a lot of Nebraska because a lot of habitat has been lost due to agriculture. I rarely go anymore because of it. Seriously one of my favorite things to do, especially if you have a well trained bird dog.
Quail are harder to shoot because they dart and are smaller. Pheasants scare the fuck out of you when they flush, though.
I wonder what the wild pheasant population is these days. Never had the pleasure of doing any first class pheasant. I have a south Texas quail outlet this year that is going to be insane.
semi related dove hunting used to be one of my favorite things to do, would love taking my expert duck hunting buddies out and see them shoot 10 feet behind. doves are all gone in our area now :(
Saw 13 does this morning, already shot one, thinking I need to tag out on does this year to thin the herd a bit. Also best friend is going hunting with me tomorrow. Here's hoping I can put her on a deer and get a treestand blow job.
Shooting a wood duck past legal hours in the afternoon (the only time they come in) is a tough ass shot
Yeah it is. I've shot (at) woodies and teal in wind blowing so hard it was like they were coming out of a fucking jugs machine.
Member of PF checking in. I haven't hunted pheasants for 3 years because the winters here have been so rough on them. My brother's boss is the regional director of PF and he said a lot of the guys around here have chosen not to hunt for a few years as well. Last year was a average winter by Minnesota standards, so they've had a chance to bounce back. My brother just got a new Brittany this spring and he's been doing well with the dummies and wings, so we're excited to get him out and blast some roosters.
I have a browning upland super sport sxs that is such a cool little shotgun but its tough sledding for anything other than a reasonably close quail shot. I used it on my first two dove hunts this year and was getting really frustrated with how many easy shots i was missing. I went to Cotulla with my bro in law and then Hondo with some friends. I bought an SBEII before and put a dove specific choke in it and it made a huge difference. Probably won't be taking the Browning out dove hunting anymore.
Jesus I want to go hunting where y'all go hunting. If I get a decent rack buck on camera it's a midnight.
Hung the buck from last season. Ran out of wall space so we threw up a few boards over the window behind the tv (we never open it and the blind always stays closed).
Hey . I have those same Solomans. Other than that, I'm about 10,000 deer points and a rattler behind you
My shoes in the picture are Merrell vibram. And they havent held up well. I am very disapointed with them :( But thx
