agreed, i had one run about 700 yards on me when i was a kid. thought that one was a fluke. I didn't realize how far it actually was until i pulled up google maps this morning and measured it out. the ~1000 yards also assumed he ran a straight line, which he didn't
My own story from today. I was watching my corn pile this evening from a stand i posted in here last year. Its about 10 acres behind a warehouse and fire dept training center and also adjacent to I95. There is a planted field beside the property that drops off from hardwoods and pine down to swamp bottom. The deer travel the bottom from their bedding to the field to eat (nobody harvested because of the monsoons we got in SC this year). Any rate, seen lots of does the past few days so i got in the stand at 330pm hoping to catch a buck chasing. Put up some doe in heat to block my scent as the wind was blowing towards the bottom. Around 445 i heard some action to my right towards the interstate and sure enough, 3 does coming from the field l, using a small creek to walk in. At the same time, I saw a brown blur to my left (and in the direction of the corn pile). I looked and it was a huge bobcat, beelining in my direction. He smelled the doe pee apparently, as I shot him 5 yds from the bottom of my stand.
Took my 10-year-old nephew hunting over the thanksgiving weekend- he shot his first deer, a young doe. I could tell he was nervous but had been nailing the practice target (his first time shooting a scope)- so I let him shoot her out at about 115 yards. He shot low in the front shoulder, (I had her in my scope and saw her jump and tuck so I thought he hit chest cavity and didn't want to shoot a 2nd shot and take away from his kill) bitch ran 250 yards at least circling around our creeks, crossed a 20-foot deep creek up and down a steep section. Hard trail- finally could tell she was slowing down and dying as she was headed back down towards the creek for water, walk up on her only to watch her scale a 25-foot cliff straight up. So we backed out, there was a lot of blood so I knew she wouldn't be too far. Went back in the morning, found her about 50 yards from where we jumped her, and I don't know if she tried to go back down in the creek or just fell in during her death run- but she was back down in it. Dragging 110 lbs of dead weight out of there in 70-degree weather sucked. Glad we got her, he had a great time- and absolutely loves it
I heard what I believe to be mountain lion once, I was scared. Sounded like a lady screaming help.... Never a lizard man though
FightingCock, I hunt alongside 95 in Walterboro near the Edisto River. Where are you? I also have pictures of a bear on my corn pile this year. First time ever.
Full moon last week fucked up my hunting. Only got 1 doe so far this year. Did split the heart with my arrow though. Gonna hit it hard the last 2 weeks of the year when I'm off. Seen a 10, 8, a few 6's and some smaller bucks on my trail cam. Hoping to end the season strong.
Anyone hear where they have been catching Cougars on trail cameras in TN? Pretty crazy. Last confirmed sighting of one in TN was over a century ago.
A year or two ago, the DNR tracked one that started in the Dakotas, walked through MN and WI and ultimately ended up in Connecticut.
Heading down to south Texas tomorrow to join the left eye club a dozen or so times. Gonna be a lot of work.
took my buddy hunting this weekend, he shot 5 times and killed 4 deer. unfortunately one was the most doe looking nubbin i have ever seen. was 40 yards away with good binoculars; i was beyond positive it was a doe. i have been doing this shit for almost 25 years and this is my first fuck up, could potentially cost us our trophy tag next year :( on the plus side my fridge is now full of deer meat
Took off work Friday with a cold front - ended up getting a nice little main frame 8, split brow tine on one side and a 3" kicker on the other brow making him a 10.
Spoiler Fucker ran down in a creek (I'm having bad luck with that lately)... took the winch on the bad boy, 2- 20' straps, and a 15' rope. To get him out, most of it wasn't too steep- thankfully.
Friend of mine killed a nice buck at Giles Island hunting club- 150 class. Another friend is on his way to El Parilla ranch in south texas, I think he said he gets to shoot a 155-160 class buck, and maybe another "small" 140 or so. Oil field is somehow still paying for it- I'm super jealous of all the deer he'll see, but I don't think it'd feel quite the same as getting even a 130 on my land after all the hard work and time it takes to get one.
I went on a hunt years ago near San Angelo, biggest buck I've ever killed. Didn't even get nervous, wasn't a big moment for me and kinda regret it. Prefer hunting our land even though I'll never see deer like that on it.
Whaddya think. 180-190? Source of the pics is classified. I was sworn to secrecy and probably shouldn't even be posting them here.
I think that's got to be 190 unless the spread in the top one is some kind of optical illusion. That's a fucking monster.
My ability to score tops out around 160- everything after that is just a blur of mass and I pop a boner and quit counting
I mentioned it in the Cecil the lion thread, but I went pheasant hunting in Indiana this weekend and hunted over the two best bird dogs of my life. They were a pair of 10 year old English pointers who were incredible. I've never seen dogs honor each other's points the same way. Just unreal. We also hunted over a pair of German shorthairs and a single gsp. All were good dogs, but they weren't close in comparison. The weather was great (highs in the mid-thirties but sunny and little wind), I shot well, and it was a beautiful place. I'll post some pictures later.
Yeah, that cat went around the great lakes through Canada and wound up getting hit by a car and killed. Another guy killed a Florida panther in Newnan, Georgia about 6-7 years back that had made its way up there from the Everglades. Starting to see a lot more black bear migration as well. http://www.fws.gov/southeast/news/2011/11-057.html
hunts like those can be exhilarating but for me I can't be in a pen no matter how large.... but those places you just never know when you'll stumble onto a 180+ deer whereas any deer on our property about tops out about 150 no matter how old due to a lack of nutrition
As far as pure pointing abilities go, English pointers hands down perform better than GSPs IME. I've never hunted a drahthaar though, which is supposed to be amazing. The overall best birdogs I've hunted with are springers...my buddy has one that'll outwork any lab in the water then flush all day in the grass and hedges. What gun did you shoot those birds with?
There was a drahthaar out there that another group within our group hunted with. He was young. I've hunted over pointers, gsps, pointing labs, English setters, springers, Brittanys, and boykins, but this pair were by far the best. The guy was obviously a great trainer, because his "b-team" of younger gsps (one was a chocolate male which was gorgeous) were still awesome dogs. They just weren't yet god-tier like the older pair. He also said "I don't like to talk about it" when one of the guys asked what age they'd probably have to retire. I was shooting my Benelli Nova 12. I don't have a double-barrel 12 and a 20 isn't really enough gun. I've spent most of the day looking into acquiring one...
i don't think the birds will mind if you post their faces. probably still pissed that they are now dead though.
All this bird dog talk has me a little bummed. My brother got an American Brittany earlier this year and spent some big bucks to have Dokken's train him. He just turned 1 year old and already tore the doggy equivalent of his ACL. On a happier note, there's going to be a full moon on Christmas and it looks like we'll have some fresh snow. I might fuck the wife to sleep a little early so I can sneak out and go blast some yotes.
My dad had a browning sweet sixteen that was in the same condition as the day it came out of the box when he was 12 that got stolen. Was such an awesome gun
What state is that in atleast? And with a rack like that, that deer must have jumped out of a deer pen.
For lack of a better place to post it, got a trail cam and just playing around. it's foxy !!! have not seen him in a while, looks like I have to go back and get more cat food
I love our trail cameras. We keep 6-7 of them out pretty much summer-winter and get some great shots. We have 4 feeders we put them over but I think we get our best shots putting them over trails or scrapes.
