For a band that is all about the jam, their set list choices confuse the hell out of me. This entire place was grooving...now I can barely hear them over everyone talking.
To my ears Gin > through the end of the show was some elite level 3.0 jamming. Gin Chalkdust Ghost RnR No Man's Slave were all really really good. I appreciated the interesting type II Hood and there was definitely some good stuff in there (CTB jamming). But they just can't get the ending down. Very rushed when it came back into Hood proper.
Some good stuff on-deck tonight: Runaway Jim Wilson Birds GBOTT Jiboo Fuego Martian Monster Mule Waves Wingsuit Suzy DWD Twist Stash Bowie Melt Sand Carini Reba Piper Mike's Groove YEM Fluffhead
Had to head home today, but in the spirit of the weekend ordered the webcast. Actually kinda stoked to see them play, since I never got much closer than the sbd the last 2 nights.
I know everybody knows, but I just like to post it. at least they got it out of the way before the 2nd set, but they should have taken care of this one on Friday. I pretty much can find something to love about most all phish songs, but this one is just cringeworthy to me everytime.
Phish are so hot and cold for me. Reba jam...killed me. Vacuum cleaner and thank you's...not my thing. This w/ Trey killing it...fuck yeah.
You are putting on your own festival with no other acts for 40,000 of your own fans and playing 8 sets of music (roughly 12 hours). I think it is ok for them to take 3 mins to thank everybody who helped put it together.
but, I also understand your overriding point about set structure and flow and whatnot. There are definitely some head scratchers sometimes, especially in 3.0. Sets weren't quite as disjointed and abrupt back in the day. Some of the gimmicky, tongue-in-cheek, cheesy stuff is just old phish history that's been going on for 30 years.
Yeah, and I don't want to turn this into a thread of me over analyzing phish. Especially after this weekend, I at least appreciate it all. There are things I really dig, and other stuff I don't. At the end of the day, they are very much a unique thing. And I appreciate them for what they are.
